10 Whatever your hands find to do, do with your strength; for there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, the place where you are going.

11 Again I saw under the sun that—

the race is not to the swift,
    nor the battle to the strong,
nor food to the wise,
    nor riches to the intelligent,
    nor favor to those with knowledge;
but time and chance happen to them all.

12 For man does not know his time:

Like fish caught in an unfortunate net,
    like birds caught in a snare,
so the sons of men are ensnared at a tragic, yet appointed time,
    when it suddenly falls on them.

11 I have seen something else under the sun:

The race is not to the swift
    or the battle to the strong,(E)
nor does food come to the wise(F)
    or wealth to the brilliant
    or favor to the learned;
but time and chance(G) happen to them all.(H)

12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
    or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times(I)
    that fall unexpectedly upon them.(J)
