Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to (A)see the sun.

So if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember (B)that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is (C)vanity.[a]

(D)Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. (E)Walk in the ways of your heart and (F)the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things (G)God will bring you into judgment.

10 Remove vexation from your heart, and (H)put away pain[b] from your body, for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.

Remember Your Creator in Your Youth

12 Remember also your Creator in (I)the days of your youth, before (J)the evil days come and the years draw near of which (K)you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”; before (L)the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain, in the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the grinders cease because they are few, and (M)those who look through the windows are dimmed, and (N)the doors on the street are shut—when (O)the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the sound of a bird, and all (P)the daughters of song are brought low— they are afraid also of what is high, and (Q)terrors are in the way; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along,[c] and desire fails, because man is going to his (R)eternal (S)home, and the (T)mourners go about the streets— before the silver cord is snapped, or (U)the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is (V)shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, and (W)the dust returns to the earth as it was, and (X)the spirit returns to God (Y)who gave it. (Z)Vanity[d] of vanities, says (AA)the Preacher; all is vanity.

Remember Your Creator While Young

Light is sweet,
    and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.(A)
However many years anyone may live,
    let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember(B) the days of darkness,
    for there will be many.
    Everything to come is meaningless.

You who are young, be happy while you are young,
    and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
    and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
    God will bring you into judgment.(C)
10 So then, banish anxiety(D) from your heart
    and cast off the troubles of your body,
    for youth and vigor are meaningless.(E)

12 Remember(F) your Creator
    in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(G) come
    and the years approach when you will say,
    “I find no pleasure in them”—
before the sun and the light
    and the moon and the stars grow dark,
    and the clouds return after the rain;
when the keepers of the house tremble,
    and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
    and those looking through the windows grow dim;
when the doors to the street are closed
    and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
    but all their songs grow faint;(H)
when people are afraid of heights
    and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
    and the grasshopper drags itself along
    and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(I)
    and mourners(J) go about the streets.

Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
    and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
    and the wheel broken at the well,
and the dust returns(K) to the ground it came from,
    and the spirit returns to God(L) who gave it.(M)

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.[a](N)
    “Everything is meaningless!(O)

Treasure in Jars of Clay

But we have this treasure in (A)jars of clay, (B)to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are (C)afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but (D)not forsaken; (E)struck down, but not destroyed; 10 (F)always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, (G)so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So (H)death is at work in us, but life in you.

13 Since we have (I)the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, (J)“I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that (K)he who raised the Lord Jesus (L)will raise us also with Jesus and (M)bring us with you into his presence. 15 For (N)it is all for your sake, so that as (O)grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, (P)to the glory of God.

16 So we do not lose heart. (Q)Though our outer self[a] is wasting away, (R)our inner self (S)is being renewed day by day. 17 For (T)this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 (U)as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay(A) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God(B) and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side,(C) but not crushed; perplexed,(D) but not in despair; persecuted,(E) but not abandoned;(F) struck down, but not destroyed.(G) 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,(H) so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.(I) 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake,(J) so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.(K)

13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[a](L) Since we have that same spirit of[b] faith,(M) we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead(N) will also raise us with Jesus(O) and present us with you to himself.(P) 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving(Q) to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart.(R) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly(S) we are being renewed(T) day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.(U) 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,(V) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
