6 Un altro male ho visto sotto il sole, che pesa molto sopra gli uomini. 2 A uno Dio ha concesso beni, ricchezze, onori e non gli manca niente di quanto desidera; ma Dio non gli concede di poterne godere, perché è un estraneo che ne gode. Ciò è vanità e malanno grave!
3 Se uno avesse cento figli e vivesse molti anni e molti fossero i suoi giorni, se egli non gode dei suoi beni e non ha neppure una tomba, allora io dico: meglio di lui l'aborto, 4 perché questi viene invano e se ne va nella tenebra e il suo nome è coperto dalla tenebra. 5 Non vide neppure il sole: non conobbe niente; eppure il suo riposo è maggiore di quello dell'altro. 6 Se quello vivesse anche due volte mille anni, senza godere dei suoi beni, forse non dovranno andare tutt'e due nel medesimo luogo?
7 Tutta la fatica dell'uomo è per la bocca e la sua brama non è mai sazia. 8 Quale vantaggio ha il saggio sullo stolto? Quale il vantaggio del povero che sa comportarsi bene di fronte ai viventi?
9 Meglio vedere con gli occhi, che vagare con il desiderio. Anche questo è vanità e un inseguire il vento. 10 Ciò che è, gia da tempo ha avuto un nome; e si sa che cos'è un uomo: egli non può competere con chi è più forte di lui. 11 Le molte parole aumentano la delusione e quale vantaggio v'è per l'uomo? 12 Chi sa quel che all'uomo convenga durante la vita, nei brevi giorni della sua vana esistenza che egli trascorre come un'ombra? Chi può indicare all'uomo cosa avverrà dopo di lui sotto il sole?

6 C'è un altro male che ho visto sotto il sole e che è diffuso fra gli uomini:
2 uno a cui DIO ha dato ricchezze, beni e gloria, e non gli manca nulla di tutto ciò che può desiderare, ma DIO non gli concede di poterne godere; ma ne gode un estraneo. Questo è vanità e un grande male.
3 Se uno generasse cento figli e vivesse molti anni e molti fossero i giorni dei suoi anni ma la sua anima non si sazia di beni e non ha neppure sepoltura, io dico che un aborto è piú felice di lui;
4 poiché è venuto invano e se ne va nelle tenebre, e il suo nome è coperto di tenebre.
5 Anche se non ha visto né conosciuto il sole, tuttavia ha piú riposo dell'altro.
6 Sí, anche se dovesse vivere due volte mille anni, senza però godere dei suoi beni. Non vanno tutti a finire nello stesso luogo?
7 Tutta la fatica dell'uomo è per la sua bocca, tuttavia il suo appetito non si sazia mai.
8 Quale vantaggio ha il saggio sopra lo stolto? Quale vantaggio ha il povero se sa come camminare davanti ai viventi?
9 E' meglio vedere con gli occhi che vagare con il desiderio. Anche questo è vanità e un cercare di afferrare il vento.
10 Ciò che è, è già stato chiamato da tempo per nome e si sa che cos'è l'uomo e che non può contendere con chi è piú forte di lui.
11 Poiché ci sono molte cose che aumentano la vanità, quale vantaggio ne ha l'uomo?
12 Chi conosce infatti ciò che è buono per l'uomo in questa vita, durante tutti i giorni della sua vita vana che egli trascorre come un'ombra? Chi sa dire all'uomo cosa avverrà dopo di lui sotto il sole?

6 Here is a tragedy I have observed under the sun,(A) and it weighs heavily on humanity:[a] 2 God gives a person riches, wealth, and honor(B) so that he lacks nothing of all he desires for himself,(C) but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is futile and a sickening tragedy. 3 A man may father a hundred children and live many years. No matter how long he lives,[b] if he is not satisfied by good things and does not even have a proper burial,(D) I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.(E) 4 For he comes in futility and he goes in darkness, and his name is shrouded in darkness. 5 Though a stillborn child does not see the sun and is not conscious, it has more rest than he. 6 And if a person lives a thousand years twice, but does not experience happiness, do not both go to the same place?
8 What advantage then does the wise person have over the fool?(G) What advantage is there for the poor person who knows how to conduct himself before others? 9 Better what the eyes see than wandering desire.(H) This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.[d](I)
10 Whatever exists was given its name long ago,[e](J) and it is known what mankind is. But he is not able to contend with the one stronger than he.(K) 11 For when there are many words, they increase futility.(L) What is the advantage for mankind? 12 For who knows what is good for anyone in life, in the few days of his futile life that he spends like a shadow?(M) Who can tell anyone what will happen after him under the sun?

6 I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind: 2 God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them,(A) and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.(B)
3 A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn(C) child is better off than he.(D) 4 It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. 5 Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man— 6 even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?(E)
7 Everyone’s toil is for their mouth,
yet their appetite is never satisfied.(F)
8 What advantage have the wise over fools?(G)
What do the poor gain
by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
9 Better what the eye sees
than the roving of the appetite.
This too is meaningless,
a chasing after the wind.(H)
10 Whatever exists has already been named,(I)
and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
with someone who is stronger.
11 The more the words,
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?
12 For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days(J) they pass through like a shadow?(K) Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?
