4 Ho poi considerato tutte le oppressioni che si commettono sotto il sole. Ecco il pianto degli oppressi che non hanno chi li consoli; da parte dei loro oppressori sta la violenza, mentre per essi non c'è chi li consoli. 2 Allora ho proclamato più felici i morti, ormai trapassati, dei viventi che sono ancora in vita; 3 ma ancor più felice degli uni e degli altri chi ancora non è e non ha visto le azioni malvage che si commettono sotto il sole.
4 Ho osservato anche che ogni fatica e tutta l'abilità messe in un lavoro non sono che invidia dell'uno con l'altro. Anche questo è vanità e un inseguire il vento.
5 Lo stolto incrocia le braccia
e divora la sua carne.
6 Meglio una manciata con riposo
che due manciate con fatica.
7 Inoltre ho considerato un'altra vanità sotto il sole: 8 uno è solo, senza eredi, non ha un figlio, non un fratello. Eppure non smette mai di faticare, né il suo occhio è sazio di ricchezza: «Per chi mi affatico e mi privo dei beni?». Anche questo è vanità e un cattivo affannarsi.
9 Meglio essere in due che uno solo, perché due hanno un miglior compenso nella fatica. 10 Infatti, se vengono a cadere, l'uno rialza l'altro. Guai invece a chi è solo: se cade, non ha nessuno che lo rialzi. 11 Inoltre, se due dormono insieme, si possono riscaldare; ma uno solo come fa a riscaldarsi? 12 Se uno aggredisce, in due gli possono resistere e una corda a tre capi non si rompe tanto presto.
13 Meglio un ragazzo povero ma accorto,
che un re vecchio e stolto
che non sa ascoltare i consigli.
14 Il ragazzo infatti può uscir di prigione ed esser proclamato re, anche se, mentre quegli regnava, è nato povero. 15 Ho visto tutti i viventi che si muovono sotto il sole, stare con quel ragazzo, il secondo, cioè l'usurpatore. 16 Era una folla immensa quella di cui egli era alla testa. Ma coloro che verranno dopo non avranno da rallegrarsi di lui. Anche questo è vanità e un inseguire il vento.
17 Bada ai tuoi passi, quando ti rechi alla casa di Dio. Avvicinarsi per ascoltare vale più del sacrificio offerto dagli stolti che non comprendono neppure di far male.

Evil Under the Sun
4 (A)Again I (B)saw all (C)the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had (D)no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them. 2 And I (E)thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive. 3 But (F)better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.
4 Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbour. This also is (G)vanity and a striving after wind.
5 The fool (H)folds his hands and (I)eats his own flesh.
6 (J)Better is a handful of (K)quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.
7 (L)Again, I saw vanity under the sun: 8 one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his (M)eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, (N)“For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy (O)business.
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, (P)but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Better was (Q)a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how (R)to take advice. 14 For he went (S)from prison to the throne, though in his own kingdom he had been born poor. 15 I saw all the living who move about under the sun, along with that[a] youth who was to stand in the king's[b] place. 16 There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is (T)vanity and a striving after wind.

Verdrukking en verdriet op aarde
4 Daarna keek ik naar alle verdrukking en verdriet op aarde, ik zag de tranen van de onderdrukten, er was niemand die hen hielp. Hun onderdrukkers gebruikten veel geweld, maar er was niemand die de onderdrukten hielp. 2 Ik kwam tot de slotsom dat de doden beter af zijn dan de levenden. 3 En het beste af zijn zij die nooit werden geboren en al het kwaad en onrecht op aarde niet zullen zien.
4 Vervolgens ontdekte ik dat succes meestal voortkomt uit afgunst en jaloezie. Maar ook dat is dwaasheid. 5 De dwaas weigert te werken en verhongert daardoor bijna. 6 Beter nu en dan een beetje rust, dan steeds maar hard werken en zinloos gejaag.
7 Ik constateerde nog een zinloze zaak op aarde. 8 Daarbij gaat het om de mens die helemaal alleen is, zonder zoon of broer, maar die toch keihard werkt om meer rijkdom te krijgen. Maar aan wie moet hij dat alles nalaten? En waarom ontzegt hij zich nu zoveel? Het is allemaal nutteloos en ontmoedigend. 9 Twee mensen kunnen door samenwerking meer bereiken dan een. 10 Als er een valt, helpt de ander hem overeind. Maar als er een valt en hij is alleen, zit hij in moeilijkheden. 11 In een koude nacht kunnen twee mensen onder één deken elkaar verwarmen, maar hoe zou iemand in zijn eentje warm moeten worden? 12 Iemand die alleen staat, kan worden aangevallen en verslagen, maar twee mensen kunnen elkaar te hulp komen en zo de overwinning behalen, drie is zelfs nog beter, want een koord dat uit drie strengen is gevlochten is niet gemakkelijk te breken.
13 Het is beter een arme, maar wijze jongere te zijn dan een oude en dwaze koning die alle goede raad van de hand wijst. 14 Want zoʼn jongere zou uit de gevangenis kunnen komen om koning te worden, ook al werd hij arm geboren. 15 Iedereen wil zoʼn jongere graag helpen, omdat hij de nieuwe machthebber wordt. 16 Hij kan de leider van miljoenen mensen worden en een goede heerser voor zijn onderdanen zijn. Maar dan groeit rond hem een nieuwe generatie op die hem weer aan de kant wil zetten. Dus ook hiervan blijkt weer de dwaasheid en zinloosheid.
17 Neem uzelf in acht als u naar de tempel, Gods huis, gaat. Het is beter om rustig te luisteren dan ondoordacht te offeren, zoals een dwaas wel doet, die zich er niet van bewust is dat dat verkeerd is.
