¹² As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, ^(A)the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. ¹³ And when the Lord saw her, ^(B)he had compassion on her and ^(C)said to her, “Do not weep.”

Jesus Heals Many

^14 (A)And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw ^(B)his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. ¹⁵ He ^(C)touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. ¹⁶ That evening they brought to him many who were ^(D)oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits ^(E)with a word and healed all who were sick.

³¹ When the Jews ^(A)who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. ³² Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, ^(B)“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” ³³ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he ^(C)was deeply moved^[a] in his spirit and ^(D)greatly troubled. ³⁴ And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” ^35 (E)Jesus wept.

²¹ But an opportunity came when Herod ^(A)on his birthday ^(B)gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. ²² For when Herodias's daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” ²³ And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, ^(C)up to half of my kingdom.” ²⁴ And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” ²⁵ And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” ²⁶ And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. ²⁷ And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John's^[a] head. He went and beheaded him in the prison ²⁸ and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. ²⁹ When his ^(D)disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

³⁸ They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus^[a] saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. ³⁹ And when he had entered, he said to them, ^(A)“Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but ^(B)sleeping.” ⁴⁰ And they laughed at him. But he ^(C)put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. ^41 (D)Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, ^(E)arise.” ⁴² And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. ⁴³ And ^(F)he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

^30 (A)That very night ^(B)Belshazzar the ^(C)Chaldean king was killed.

The Handwriting on the Wall

5 ^(A)King Belshazzar ^(B)made a great feast for a thousand of his ^(C)lords and drank wine in front of the thousand.

^2 (D)Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that ^(E)the vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchadnezzar his father^[a] had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. ³ Then they brought in ^(F)the golden vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. ⁴ They drank wine and ^(G)praised the ^(H)gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.
