¹³ Laughter can conceal a heavy heart,
    but when the laughter ends, the grief remains.

⁵ Better to be criticized by a wise person
    than to be praised by a fool.
⁶ A fool’s laughter is quickly gone,
    like thorns crackling in a fire.
    This also is meaningless.

³ You push away every thought of coming disaster,
    but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer.
⁴ How terrible for you who sprawl on ivory beds
    and lounge on your couches,
eating the meat of tender lambs from the flock
    and of choice calves fattened in the stall.
⁵ You sing trivial songs to the sound of the harp
    and fancy yourselves to be great musicians like David.
⁶ You drink wine by the bowlful
    and perfume yourselves with fragrant lotions.
    You care nothing about the ruin of your nation.^[a]

¹² At that time the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
    called you to weep and mourn.
He told you to shave your heads in sorrow for your sins
    and to wear clothes of burlap to show your remorse.
¹³ But instead, you dance and play;
    you slaughter cattle and kill sheep.
    You feast on meat and drink wine.
You say, “Let’s feast and drink,
    for tomorrow we die!”
