⁵ There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as great an error as if it proceeded from the ruler:

¹³ There is a grievous ill that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owners to their hurt,^(A)

³ This is an evil in all that happens under the sun, that the same fate comes to everyone. Moreover, the hearts of humans are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.^(A)

The Frustration of Desires

6 There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy upon humankind:^(A)

⁷ Again, I saw vanity under the sun:

4 Again I saw all the oppressions that are practiced under the sun. Look, the tears of the oppressed—with no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power—with no one to comfort them.^(A)

Judgment and the Future Belong to God

¹⁶ Moreover, I saw under the sun that, in the place of justice, wickedness was there, and in the place of righteousness, wickedness was there as well.
