知恵について
7 良い評判を得ることは、
最高級の香水より値打ちがあり、
死ぬ日は生まれた日より大切である。
2 宴会に顔を出すより、
葬式に列席するほうがよい。
やがて死ぬわけだから、
生きているうちに死について考えるのは良いことだ。
3 悲しみは笑いにまさっている。
悲しみは、私たちの心から
不純物を取り除く効果があるからだ。
4 知恵ある者は死についてじっくり考えるが、
愚か者はどうしたら今
愉快に過ごせるかだけを考える。
5 愚か者からちやほやされるより、
知恵ある者に痛烈な批評を受けるほうが良い。
6 愚か者のお世辞は、火にくべた紙切れのように、
何の役にも立たない。
そんなものに心を動かすのは、
なんとむなしいことか。
7 知恵ある者も、わいろによって愚かな者になる。
わいろは人の判断力を麻痺させるからだ。
8 終わりは初めにまさっている。
忍耐は高慢にまさっている。
9 短気を起こしてはならない。
短気は愚か者の特徴だからだ。
10 過ぎ去った昔の栄光に未練を残してはいけない。
ほんとうに昔が今より良かったか、わからないからだ。
11 知恵ある者になることは、金持ちになるのと同じくらい
いや、それ以上の価値がある。
12 知恵からでも金銭からでも、
利益を上げることができる。
しかし賢くなることのほうが、
多くの利点がある。
13 神のすることに目を留め、それに従いなさい。神が決めたことを変えることなどできません。 14 順境のときには、できるだけ楽しみなさい。逆境が訪れたら、神は与えると同時に取り上げる方だと知りなさい。こうしてすべての人が、この世ではあらゆるものがむなしいと悟るのです。
15-17 私は、このむなしい人生のすべてを見てきました。正しい人が若死にし、悪人がたいそう長生きすることもあるのです。だから、正しすぎたり、知恵がありすぎたりして、自滅してはいけません。かといって、悪人になりすぎるのも、愚か者になるのも考えものです。自分の時が来る前に死んではいけません。 18 任せられた仕事は、どんなことがあっても手放してはいけません。神を敬っているなら、必ず神からの祝福を期待できるのです。
19 知恵ある者は、町の十人の有力者の力を合わせたより力があります。 20 この世界には、いつも品行方正で一度も罪を犯さない人など一人もいません。
21-22 人の言うことをすべて気にしてはいけません。時として使用人からのろわれるかもしれません。あなたも、何度も人をのろったはずです。
23 私は知恵ある者になろうと、できるだけのことをしてみました。「知恵ある者になりたい」と人前で言ってみましたが、知恵ある者になることはできませんでした。 24 知恵は遠いかなたにあって、探し出すのはきわめて困難です。 25 私は知恵と道理を見つけようと、あらゆる所を探しました。また、悪行が愚かで、愚かさがどれほどばかげたことであるか悟ろうとしました。
26 悪い女は死よりも大きな苦痛を与えます。神に喜ばれる者は恵みによって彼女から逃れますが、罪を犯す者は彼女のしかけた罠にかかってしまいます。
27-28 そこで、「私の結論はこうだ」と伝道者は言います。私はあらゆる方面から調べてみて、次のことを確信するようになりました。私が話を聞いた男の千人に一人は、確かに知恵がある人物です。しかし女には、知恵のある者は一人もいませんでした。 29 さらに、次のことも知りました。神は人を正しい者に造ったのに、人々は堕落の道に向かって行ったということです。
8 知恵を身につけて、物事を正しく判断し、
さらに分析し説明できる能力があったなら、
どんなにすばらしいことか。
知恵は人の顔を輝かし、その顔を和らげる。
王に従いなさい
2-3 誓ったとおりに王に従いなさい。どんないやなことであっても、誓いを果たすことから逃げようとしてはなりません。王は不従順な者に罰を加えるからです。 4 王のことばには権威があるので、それに逆らったり疑問を差しはさんだりできる者はいません。
5 従順な者は罰せられることがない。
知恵ある者は、
自分のことばを実行する時と方法とを知っている。
6-7 そうです。困難が重くのしかかっていても、すべてのことに時と方法があります。人は予期できないことが身に降りかかるのを、避けることはできません。
8 だれも、たましいが体から離れるのをとどめることはできません。自分の死ぬ日をかってに決めることもできません。この暗黒の戦いを免れることは絶対にできないのです。その場に臨んだら、どんなにじたばたしても始まりません。
9-10 私は、人々が支配したりされたりして互いに傷つけ合っていることを考えてみました。悪者でも葬式をすませ、墓地から帰って来るときには、友人たちは故人のした悪事をすっかり忘れています。それどころか、その男は生前に多くの犯罪を重ねた当の町で、ほめそやされるのです。なんとおかしな話でしょう。 11 神はすぐに罪人を罰しないので、人々は悪いことをしても別に怖くないと思っているのです。 12 百度も罪を犯して、なお生き長らえている人があるとしても、神を敬っている人のほうが幸せです。 13 悪者どもは幸福な長い人生を送ることもできません。彼らは神を敬わないので、その一生は影のように早く過ぎ去ります。
14 この地上では、奇妙なことが起こっています。正しい人が悪人のような待遇を受け、逆に、悪人が正しい人のような待遇を受けているのです。これもまた、割り切れない思いにさせられます。 15 そこで私は、おもしろおかしく一生を送ろうと決心しました。この世では、食べて、飲んで、愉快にやること以外に良いことはないと考えたのです。この幸福は、神が世界中の人に与えているつらい仕事に添えられてくるものです。
16-17 私は知恵を尋ね求めている間に、地上での、休むことのない人の活動を観察してみましたが、すべてのことを見抜くのは神だけでした。自分は何でも知っているとうそぶく、知恵のかたまりのような人でも、実はわずかのことさえ知らないのです。
無差別に訪れる運命
9 私は注意深く、次のことも探求してみました。神を敬う人も知恵のある人も神の計画の中にありますが、神がその人のことを喜んでいるかどうかは、だれにもわかりません。確かなことは何も言えないのです。 2-3 善人でも悪人でも、信仰がある人もない人も、神をののしる者も神を敬う者も、どんな人も、同じ摂理で動かされています。すべての人に同じ結末が来るとは、なんと不公平でしょう。だからこそ、人は正しく生きようとはせず、常軌を逸した道を選ぶのです。待ちかまえているのは死だけですから、希望などありません。
4 生きている人にだけ、希望があります。「死んだライオンより、生きている犬のほうがましだ」と言われるとおりです。 5 生きている者には、少なくとも自分は死ぬという自覚があります。ところが、死んだ者は何一つわからないのです。記憶さえありません。 6 愛したことも、ねたみ憎んだことも、とうの昔に消えてなくなり、もはやこの地上には一つも分け前がないのです。
7 さあ、食べて、飲んで、愉快に生きればよい。
神はそんなことで動じることはない。
8 かぐわしい香水をかけ、上等の服を着なさい。
9 短い一生の間、愛する女性と幸福に過ごしなさい。神が下さった妻は、地上での労苦に対する最大の報酬だからです。 10 何をするにしても、りっぱに仕上げなさい。あなたが行くことになる死後の世界では、仕事も計画も知識も知恵もないからです。
11 私は再び今の世を見て、足の速い人が必ずしも競走で勝つとは限らず、強い人が必ずしも戦いに勝つわけでもなく、知恵ある人が貧しい暮らしをし、実力があるのに認められない人がいることを知りました。あらゆることが偶然の組み合わせであり、すべては時と機会とによって決まるのです。 12 いつ運の悪さに見舞われるかを知っている人はいません。人はみな、網にかかった魚、罠にかかった鳥のようです。
愚かさにまさる知恵
13 人の世の出来事を見てきた私に、もう一つ深く印象に残っていることがあります。 14 人口の少ない町があり、そこに強い王が大軍を率いて攻めて来て、包囲した時のことです。 15 この町に、知恵はありながら非常に貧しい人がいました。この人は町を救う方法を知っており、力を尽くして町を攻撃から守りました。ところが、あとになると、誰ひとり彼のことを思い出さないのです。 16 このことで、知恵は力以上のものだが、その人が貧しければさげすまれ、彼が何を言っても聞かないことがよくわかりました。
17 しかし、そうは言うものの、
知恵ある人の穏やかなことばは、
愚かな王のどなり散らすことばより、
人々に聞かれる。
18 知恵は武器にまさるが、
たった一度のミスが物事全部をだめにする。

Wisdom
7 A good name is better than fine perfume,(A)
and the day of death better than the day of birth.(B)
2 It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death(C) is the destiny(D) of everyone;
the living should take this to heart.
3 Frustration is better than laughter,(E)
because a sad face is good for the heart.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.(F)
5 It is better to heed the rebuke(G) of a wise person
than to listen to the song of fools.
6 Like the crackling of thorns(H) under the pot,
so is the laughter(I) of fools.
This too is meaningless.
7 Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
and a bribe(J) corrupts the heart.
8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience(K) is better than pride.
9 Do not be quickly provoked(L) in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools.(M)
10 Do not say, “Why were the old days(N) better than these?”
For it is not wise to ask such questions.
11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing(O)
and benefits those who see the sun.(P)
12 Wisdom is a shelter
as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves those who have it.
13 Consider what God has done:(Q)
Who can straighten
what he has made crooked?(R)
14 When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
as well as the other.(S)
Therefore, no one can discover
anything about their future.
15 In this meaningless life(T) of mine I have seen both of these:
the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
and the wicked living long in their wickedness.(U)
16 Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?(V)
18 It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God(W) will avoid all extremes.[a]
20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,(Z)
no one who does what is right and never sins.(AA)
21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you(AB) may hear your servant cursing you—
22 for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.
23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said,
“I am determined to be wise”(AC)—
but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
who can discover it?(AD)
25 So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things(AE)
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
and the madness of folly.(AF)
26 I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare,(AG)
whose heart is a trap
and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
but the sinner she will ensnare.(AH)
27 “Look,” says the Teacher,[b](AI) “this is what I have discovered:
“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28 while I was still searching
but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman(AJ) among them all.
29 This only have I found:
God created mankind upright,
but they have gone in search of many schemes.”
8 Who is like the wise?
Who knows the explanation of things?
A person’s wisdom brightens their face
and changes its hard appearance.
Obey the King
2 Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God. 3 Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence.(AK) Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases. 4 Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?(AL)”
5 Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm,
and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.
6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter,(AM)
though a person may be weighed down by misery.
7 Since no one knows the future,
who can tell someone else what is to come?
8 As no one has power over the wind to contain it,
so[c] no one has power over the time of their death.
As no one is discharged in time of war,
so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
9 All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own[d] hurt. 10 Then too, I saw the wicked buried(AN)—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise[e] in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.
11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong. 12 Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better(AO) with those who fear God,(AP) who are reverent before him.(AQ) 13 Yet because the wicked do not fear God,(AR) it will not go well with them, and their days(AS) will not lengthen like a shadow.
14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve.(AT) This too, I say, is meaningless.(AU) 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life(AV), because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink(AW) and be glad.(AX) Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.
16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom(AY) and to observe the labor that is done on earth(AZ)—people getting no sleep day or night— 17 then I saw all that God has done.(BA) No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.(BB)
A Common Destiny for All
9 So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them.(BC) 2 All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[f] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.
As it is with the good,
so with the sinful;
as it is with those who take oaths,
so with those who are afraid to take them.(BD)
3 This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all.(BE) The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live,(BF) and afterward they join the dead.(BG) 4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[g]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!
5 For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;(BH)
they have no further reward,
and even their name(BI) is forgotten.(BJ)
6 Their love, their hate
and their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
in anything that happens under the sun.(BK)
7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine(BL) with a joyful heart,(BM) for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white,(BN) and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife,(BO) whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot(BP) in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever(BQ) your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,(BR) for in the realm of the dead,(BS) where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.(BT)
11 I have seen something else under the sun:
The race is not to the swift
or the battle to the strong,(BU)
nor does food come to the wise(BV)
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned;
but time and chance(BW) happen to them all.(BX)
12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:
As fish are caught in a cruel net,
or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times(BY)
that fall unexpectedly upon them.(BZ)
Wisdom Better Than Folly
13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom(CA) that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man.(CB) 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.(CC)
17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom(CD) is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.

4 主に仕えたために、今こうして牢獄につながれている私からお願いします。このようにすばらしい神の祝福を受けるために選ばれたあなたがたは、それにふさわしく生活し、行動してください。 2 謙遜で柔和な人になってください。愛をもって互いの欠点を思いやり、互いに忍耐してください。 3 御霊によって心を一つにされるよう常に努力し、互いに仲良く暮らしなさい。
それぞれに与えられた能力
4 私たちはみな、一つの体の各器官です。だれもが同じ御霊を与えられ、同じ輝かしい未来へと招かれています。 5 また、私たちの主はただ一人であり、信仰も一つであり、バプテスマ（洗礼）も一つです。 6 そして、私たちすべての上に立ち、すべての中に宿り、各器官である私たちを貫いて生きておられる、神であり父である方は一つです。
7 けれども、キリストは私たち一人一人に、それぞれ賜物を与えてくださいました。ご自分の豊かな賜物の宝庫から、お心のままに与えてくださったのです。 8 聖書の詩篇の作者は、こう言っています。
「（キリストは）復活してサタンに打ち勝ち、
勝利を得て天に帰られた時、
人々に惜しみなく賜物をお与えになった。」（詩篇68・18）
9 ここで、キリストが「天に帰られた」という点に注意してください。つまり、最初は天の一番高い所におられたのに、地の一番低い所に下られたことを意味します。 10 この下って来られた方が、天に帰られたのです。それは、キリストが、底辺から頂点に至るまで、あらゆる点であらゆるものを満たすためなのです。
11 さてこうして、ある者には使徒としての賜物が与えられ、ある者にはすぐれた説教者としての賜物が与えられました。また、キリストを救い主として信じるように人々を指導する賜物を受けた者もいれば、羊を見守る羊飼いのように、神の民となった人たちの世話をし、教え導く力を受けた者もいます。
12 なぜこのように、それぞれに賜物が与えられたのでしょうか。それは、神の民となった人々が、神のためによりよく働けるよう整え、キリストの体である教会を、力にあふれた、完成した状態へと建て上げるためです。 13 そしてついに、私たちは、救いについて、また救い主である神の子について同じ信仰を持つに至り、主にあって完全に成長した者となるのです。 14 そこで、もはや、だれかから間違ったことを教えられたり、うそを真実のようにたくみに見せかけられたりしても、そのたびに、子どものようにふらふらと信じるものを変えてはいけません。 15 むしろ、誠実に語り、誠実にふるまい、誠実に生きて、常に真理に従うことを喜び、あらゆる点で、教会のかしらであるキリストにますます似た者となるのです。 16 このキリストのもとで、各器官が結び合わされ、体全体がしっかりと組み合わされて成長し、愛にあふれるようになるのです。
新しい生き方をしなさい
17 そこで私は、主にあって、このことを言わせていただきます。もうこれから先、救われていない人のようにむなしい生き方をしてはなりません。 18 彼らの閉ざされた心の中は真っ暗です。神に対して心を閉ざしているので、神のいのちから遠く離れています。 19 彼らは、善悪の区別など気にもせず、思いのままに、ふしだらな行いにふけっています。 20 しかし、キリストが教えてくださった生き方は、全く違います。 21 もしあなたがたが、ほんとうにキリストの声を聞き、キリストについて真理を学んでいるなら、 22 古い邪悪な性質を捨て去りなさい。古い性質とは、以前のあなたがたのように肉欲に惑わされ、滅んでいくような生き方です。 23 あなたがたの態度や考えを一新しなければなりません。 24 あなたがたは、神にかたどって造られた新しい人になるように、新しい性質を身にまといなさい。
25 私たちは互いに体の一部分なのですから、ごまかし合いをやめ、真実を語りなさい。 26 腹を立てることがあっても、恨みをいだいて罪を犯してはなりません。いつまでも怒ったままでいないで、すぐに怒りを収めなさい。 27 悪魔につけ込むすきを与えないためです。 28 盗みを働いていた人はやめ、かえって困っている人に施しができるように、まともに働きなさい。 29 悪意のこもったことばを口にしてはいけません。相手の益となり、助けとなること、また祝福を与えることだけを話しなさい。 30 聖霊を悲しませるような生き方をしてはいけません。この聖霊は、罪からの救いが完成する日のために、救いの確かな証印を押してくださる方であることを忘れてはなりません。 31 無慈悲、憤り、怒りなどを捨てなさい。とげのあることばやえこひいきをなくしなさい。 32 むしろ、互いに親切にし、心のやさしい人になりなさい。そして、神がキリストにあってあなたがたを赦してくださったように、互いに赦し合いなさい。

Unity and Maturity in the Body of Christ
4 As a prisoner(A) for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy(B) of the calling(C) you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another(D) in love.(E) 3 Make every effort to keep the unity(F) of the Spirit through the bond of peace.(G) 4 There is one body(H) and one Spirit,(I) just as you were called to one hope when you were called(J); 5 one Lord,(K) one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all,(L) who is over all and through all and in all.(M)
7 But to each one of us(N) grace(O) has been given(P) as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it[a] says:
9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[c]? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended(S) higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)(T) 11 So Christ himself gave(U) the apostles,(V) the prophets,(W) the evangelists,(X) the pastors and teachers,(Y) 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ(Z) may be built up(AA) 13 until we all reach unity(AB) in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God(AC) and become mature,(AD) attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.(AE)
14 Then we will no longer be infants,(AF) tossed back and forth by the waves,(AG) and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.(AH) 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love,(AI) we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head,(AJ) that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows(AK) and builds itself up(AL) in love,(AM) as each part does its work.
Instructions for Christian Living
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer(AN) live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.(AO) 18 They are darkened in their understanding(AP) and separated from the life of God(AQ) because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.(AR) 19 Having lost all sensitivity,(AS) they have given themselves over(AT) to sensuality(AU) so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off(AV) your old self,(AW) which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;(AX) 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;(AY) 24 and to put on(AZ) the new self,(BA) created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.(BB)
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully(BC) to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.(BD) 26 “In your anger do not sin”[d]:(BE) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.(BF) 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,(BG) doing something useful with their own hands,(BH) that they may have something to share with those in need.(BI)
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,(BJ) but only what is helpful for building others up(BK) according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,(BL) with whom you were sealed(BM) for the day of redemption.(BN) 31 Get rid of(BO) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(BP) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(BQ) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(BR)
