Deboras och Baraks sång
5 Debora och Barak, Avinoams son, sjöng den dagen denna sång:
2 ”När Israels furstar visar vägen
och folket villigt offrar sig,
prisa Herrens namn!
3 Hör, ni kungar, lyssna ni härskare!
Jag ska sjunga inför Herren
och spela inför Israels Gud.
4 Du, Herre, ledde oss ut ur Seir
och fram över Edoms slätter,
marken skakade, från himlen strömmade regnet ner
och vatten strömmar ur molnen.
5 Bergen skälvde inför Herren,
den Väldige på Sinai, Herren, Israels Gud.
6 På Shamgars, Anats sons, och Jaels tid
låg vägarna öde.
Vandrarna valde vindlande stigar.
7 Israel saknade ledare,
tills Debora trädde fram,
tills hon blev en mor för Israel.
8 När Israel valde nya gudar
kom striden fram till stadsportarna.[a]
Varken sköld eller spjut fanns.
Israels 40 000 saknade vapen.
9 Mitt hjärta vänder sig till Israels ledare
och till alla som villigt följer dem!
Prisa Herren!
10 Prisa honom, alla ni som rider på vita åsnor,
och sitter på dyrbara mattor
och alla ni som går till fots!
11 Sångarna sjunger lovsång vid brunnen,
sången om Herrens rättfärdiga gärningar,
hur han räddade Israel
med sina krigare.
Herrens folk tågade in
genom portarna.
12 Vakna, Debora,
vakna och sjung!
Stå upp, Barak!
Du, Avinoams son, för bort dina fångar!
13 Männen som fanns kvar
marscherade ner till de tappra.
Herrens folk kom till mig
med sina mäktiga.
14 Män kom från Efraim,
med rotfäste i Amalek,
och Benjamin,
som följde efter dig med dina skaror.
Från Makir kom furstar
och från Sebulon män med ledarstav.
15 Isaskars furstar följde Debora
och Barak ner i dalen.
Men Rubens stam
höll grundliga rådslag.
16 Varför satt du hemma bland fållorna[b]
och lyssnade på herdeflöjter?

17 Gilead stannade på andra sidan Jordan.
Varför blev Dan kvar vid sina fartyg?
Och Asher blev kvar vid stranden
i lugn och ro.
18 Men Sebulons och Naftalis stammar
riskerade livet på stridsfältets höjder.
19 Kanaans kungar
stred vid Tanak
nära Megiddos källor
men de blev utan silver och utan byte.
20 Till och med himlens stjärnor
stred mot Sisera.
21 Den brusande floden Kishon,
urtidsfloden
förde bort dem.
Dra vidare, var stark min själ!
22 Hör hovtrampet från fiendens hingstar!
Se hur stridshästarna jagar fram!
23 Men Herrens ängel befallde att förbanna Meros.
’Förbanna dess inbyggare’, sa han.
’De kom inte till Herrens hjälp,
till Herrens och hjältarnas hjälp.’
24 Välsignad bland kvinnorna ska Jael vara,
keniten Hevers hustru,
ja, välsignad mer än andra kvinnor som bor i tält.
25 Han bad om vatten, men hon gav honom mjölk
i en dyrbar skål,
hon bjöd honom på tjockmjölk.
26 Hennes hand grep efter tältpluggen,
hennes högra hand efter hammaren,
och med snickarens hammare
slog hon honom i huvudet,
genomborrade Siseras tinning.
27 Han sjönk ner vid hennes fötter,
låg stilla och var död.
28 Siseras mor såg väntande ut genom fönstret
och hon ropade:
’Varför dröjer hans vagn så länge?
Var är klappret av hovar?’
29 Då svarar hennes hovdam,
och själv ger hon samma svar:
30 ’Bytet de skiftar är stort,
en flicka åt var man eller två,
dyrbara mantlar åt Sisera
och vackra tyger,
brokiga dukar, en eller två åt den som tog byte.
Allt detta som byte!’
31 Herre, så ska alla dina fiender förgås,
men de som älskar Herren ska stråla av kraft
som den uppgående solen!”
Därefter fick landet fred i fyrtio år.

The Song of Deborah
5 On that day Deborah(A) and Barak son of Abinoam(B) sang this song:(C)
2 “When the princes in Israel take the lead,
when the people willingly offer(D) themselves—
praise the Lord!(E)
3 “Hear this, you kings! Listen, you rulers!
I, even I, will sing to[a] the Lord;(F)
I will praise the Lord, the God of Israel, in song.(G)
4 “When you, Lord, went out(H) from Seir,(I)
when you marched from the land of Edom,
the earth shook,(J) the heavens poured,
the clouds poured down water.(K)
5 The mountains quaked(L) before the Lord, the One of Sinai,
before the Lord, the God of Israel.
6 “In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,(M)
in the days of Jael,(N) the highways(O) were abandoned;
travelers took to winding paths.(P)
7 Villagers in Israel would not fight;
they held back until I, Deborah,(Q) arose,
until I arose, a mother in Israel.
8 God chose new leaders(R)
when war came to the city gates,(S)
but not a shield or spear(T) was seen
among forty thousand in Israel.
9 My heart is with Israel’s princes,
with the willing volunteers(U) among the people.
Praise the Lord!
10 “You who ride on white donkeys,(V)
sitting on your saddle blankets,
and you who walk along the road,
consider 11 the voice of the singers[b] at the watering places.
They recite the victories(W) of the Lord,
the victories of his villagers in Israel.
“Then the people of the Lord
went down to the city gates.(X)
12 ‘Wake up,(Y) wake up, Deborah!(Z)
Wake up, wake up, break out in song!
Arise, Barak!(AA)
Take captive your captives,(AB) son of Abinoam.’
13 “The remnant of the nobles came down;
the people of the Lord came down to me against the mighty.
14 Some came from Ephraim,(AC) whose roots were in Amalek;(AD)
Benjamin(AE) was with the people who followed you.
From Makir(AF) captains came down,
from Zebulun those who bear a commander’s[c] staff.
15 The princes of Issachar(AG) were with Deborah;(AH)
yes, Issachar was with Barak,(AI)
sent under his command into the valley.
In the districts of Reuben
there was much searching of heart.
16 Why did you stay among the sheep pens[d](AJ)
to hear the whistling for the flocks?(AK)
In the districts of Reuben

17 Gilead(AL) stayed beyond the Jordan.
And Dan, why did he linger by the ships?
Asher(AM) remained on the coast(AN)
and stayed in his coves.
18 The people of Zebulun(AO) risked their very lives;
so did Naphtali(AP) on the terraced fields.(AQ)
19 “Kings came(AR), they fought,
the kings of Canaan fought.
At Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo,(AS)
they took no plunder of silver.(AT)
20 From the heavens(AU) the stars fought,
from their courses they fought against Sisera.
21 The river Kishon(AV) swept them away,
the age-old river, the river Kishon.
March on, my soul; be strong!(AW)
22 Then thundered the horses’ hooves—
galloping, galloping go his mighty steeds.(AX)
23 ‘Curse Meroz,’ said the angel of the Lord.
‘Curse its people bitterly,
because they did not come to help the Lord,
to help the Lord against the mighty.’
24 “Most blessed of women(AY) be Jael,(AZ)
the wife of Heber the Kenite,(BA)
most blessed of tent-dwelling women.
25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk;(BB)
in a bowl fit for nobles she brought him curdled milk.
26 Her hand reached for the tent peg,
her right hand for the workman’s hammer.
She struck Sisera, she crushed his head,
she shattered and pierced his temple.(BC)
27 At her feet he sank,
he fell; there he lay.
At her feet he sank, he fell;
where he sank, there he fell—dead(BD).
28 “Through the window(BE) peered Sisera’s mother;
behind the lattice she cried out,(BF)
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?’
29 The wisest of her ladies answer her;
indeed, she keeps saying to herself,
30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoils:(BG)
a woman or two for each man,
colorful garments as plunder for Sisera,
colorful garments embroidered,
highly embroidered garments(BH) for my neck—
all this as plunder?(BI)’
31 “So may all your enemies perish,(BJ) Lord!
But may all who love you be like the sun(BK)
when it rises in its strength.”(BL)
Then the land had peace(BM) forty years.

5 Then sang Deb′orah and Barak the son of Abin′o-am on that day:
2 “That the leaders took the lead in Israel,
that the people offered themselves willingly,
bless[a] the Lord!
3 “Hear, O kings; give ear, O princes;
to the Lord I will sing,
I will make melody to the Lord, the God of Israel.
4 “Lord, when thou didst go forth from Se′ir,
when thou didst march from the region of Edom,
the earth trembled,
and the heavens dropped,
yea, the clouds dropped water.
5 The mountains quaked before the Lord,
yon Sinai before the Lord, the God of Israel.
6 “In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath,
in the days of Ja′el, caravans ceased
and travelers kept to the byways.
7 The peasantry ceased in Israel, they ceased
until you arose, Deb′orah,
arose as a mother in Israel.
8 When new gods were chosen,
then war was in the gates.
Was shield or spear to be seen
among forty thousand in Israel?
9 My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel
who offered themselves willingly among the people.
Bless the Lord.
10 “Tell of it, you who ride on tawny asses,
you who sit on rich carpets[b]
and you who walk by the way.
11 To the sound of musicians[c] at the watering places,
there they repeat the triumphs of the Lord,
the triumphs of his peasantry in Israel.
“Then down to the gates marched the people of the Lord.
12 “Awake, awake, Deb′orah!
Awake, awake, utter a song!
Arise, Barak, lead away your captives,
O son of Abin′o-am.
13 Then down marched the remnant of the noble;
the people of the Lord marched down for him[d] against the mighty.
14 From E′phraim they set out thither[e] into the valley,[f]
following you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen;
from Machir marched down the commanders,
and from Zeb′ulun those who bear the marshal’s staff;
15 the princes of Is′sachar came with Deb′orah,
and Is′sachar faithful to Barak;
into the valley they rushed forth at his heels.
Among the clans of Reuben

16 Why did you tarry among the sheepfolds,
to hear the piping for the flocks?

and Dan, why did he abide with the ships?
Asher sat still at the coast of the sea,
settling down by his landings.
18 Zeb′ulun is a people that jeoparded their lives to the death;
Naph′tali too, on the heights of the field.
19 “The kings came, they fought;
then fought the kings of Canaan,
at Ta′anach, by the waters of Megid′do;
they got no spoils of silver.
20 From heaven fought the stars,
from their courses they fought against Sis′era.
21 The torrent Kishon swept them away,
the onrushing torrent, the torrent Kishon.
March on, my soul, with might!
22 “Then loud beat the horses’ hoofs
with the galloping, galloping of his steeds.
23 “Curse Meroz, says the angel of the Lord,
curse bitterly its inhabitants,
because they came not to the help of the Lord,
to the help of the Lord against the mighty.
24 “Most blessed of women be Ja′el,
the wife of Heber the Ken′ite,
of tent-dwelling women most blessed.
25 He asked water and she gave him milk,
she brought him curds in a lordly bowl.
26 She put her hand to the tent peg
and her right hand to the workmen’s mallet;
she struck Sis′era a blow,
she crushed his head,
she shattered and pierced his temple.
27 He sank, he fell,
he lay still at her feet;
at her feet he sank, he fell;
where he sank, there he fell dead.
28 “Out of the window she peered,
the mother of Sis′era gazed[g] through the lattice:
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why tarry the hoofbeats of his chariots?’
29 Her wisest ladies make answer,
nay, she gives answer to herself,
30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil?—
A maiden or two for every man;
spoil of dyed stuffs for Sis′era,
spoil of dyed stuffs embroidered,
two pieces of dyed work embroidered for my neck as spoil?’
31 “So perish all thine enemies, O Lord!
But thy friends be like the sun as he rises in his might.”
And the land had rest for forty years.
