Simsons hämnd på filisteerna
15 En tid därefter, medan veteskörden pågick[a], besökte Simson sin hustru och hade med sig en killing. Han sade: ”Låt mig gå in till min hustru i kammaren.” Men hennes far lät honom inte gå in. 2 (A) Han sade: ”Jag var säker på att du avskydde henne, så jag gav henne till din bröllopssven. Men hon har en yngre syster som är vackrare än hon. Ta henne i stället! 3 Men Simson svarade dem: ”Den här gången är jag utan skuld till filisteerna om jag gör dem illa.”
4 Simson gick och fångade trehundra rävar.[b] Sedan tog han facklor, band ihop rävar med svansarna två och två och satte en fackla mellan de två svansarna. 5 Därefter tände han eld på facklorna och släppte in rävarna på filisteernas sädesfält och satte eld på både sädeskärvar och oskuren säd, vingårdar och olivlundar.
6 När filisteerna frågade vem som hade gjort detta, fick de svaret: ”Det var Simson, timnitens svärson, för att timniten tog hans hustru och gav henne till hans bröllopssven.” Då drog filisteerna ut och brände upp både henne och hennes far i eld. 7 Men Simson sade till dem: ”Om ni gör så här tänker jag verkligen inte vila förrän jag tagit hämnd på er.” 8 Och han slog dem sönder och samman så att de led ett stort nederlag. Sedan gick han ner därifrån och bodde i bergsklyftan vid Etam.
9 Då drog filisteerna upp och slog läger i Juda och spred sig i Lehi. 10 Och Juda män sade: ”Varför har ni dragit upp hit mot oss?” De svarade: ”Vi har kommit upp för att binda Simson och göra mot honom som han har gjort mot oss. 11 Då gick tretusen män från Juda ner till bergsklyftan vid Etam och sade till Simson: ”Förstår du inte att filisteerna härskar över oss? Varför har du gjort så här mot oss?” Han svarade dem: ”Som de har gjort mot mig, har jag gjort mot dem.” 12 De sade till honom: ”Vi har kommit ner för att binda dig och överlämna dig till filisteerna.” Simson sade till dem: ”Svär på att ni inte själva dödar mig.” 13 De svarade honom: ”Nej, vi tänker bara binda dig och överlämna dig till dem. Vi ska inte döda dig.” Så band de honom med två nya rep och förde honom upp från klippan.
14 När han kom till Lehi, ropade filisteerna och sprang emot honom. Då föll Herrens Ande över honom, och repen runt hans armar blev som lintrådar som fattat eld, och banden bara smälte bort från hans händer. 15 Han fick syn på ett färskt käkben från en åsna, räckte ut handen och tog det och slog ihjäl tusen man med det. 16 Sedan sade Simson:
”Med åsnekäken
slog jag en hop[c], ja, två.
Med åsnekäken
slog jag tusen man.”
17 När han hade sagt detta, kastade han käken ifrån sig. Och man kallade den platsen Ramat-Lehi.[d] 18 Och han blev mycket törstig och ropade till Herren: ”Du har gett denna stora seger genom din tjänare, och nu kommer jag att dö av törst och falla i de oomskurnas hand!” 19 Då klöv Gud fördjupningen i Lehi, och fram ur den flödade vatten. Han drack, och hans ande återvände och han fick liv igen. Därför kallas källan ”Den ropandes källa i Lehi”, och den finns i Lehi än i dag.
20 Och Simson var domare i Israel i tjugo år[e] under filisteernas tid.

Simson dödar många fiender
1-2 Lite senare, under veteskörden, tog Simson med sig en killing och gick för att besöka sin hustru, men hennes far ville inte släppa in honom till henne.Jag trodde att du hatade henne, förklarade han. Därför lät jag henne gifta sig med din vän. Men hör här, hon har en syster som ser ännu bättre ut. Henne kan du i stället gifta dig med.
3 Då blev Simson rasande och röt: Nu har jag verkligen anledning att göra upp med er filisteer!
4 Han fångade 300 rävar, band ihop dem i svansarna två och två och band fast en fackla mellan varje par.
5 Så tände han facklorna och släppte rävarna lösa bland filisteernas sädesfält. Fälten brändes ner fullständigt tillsammans med kärvar och sädesskylar, och även vingårdar och olivplanteringar förstördes.
6 När filisteerna frågade vem som hade gjort allt detta blev svaret: Simson! Han har gjort det därför att hans svärfar gett hans hustru till en annan. Filisteerna tog då flickan och hennes far och brände dem levande.
7 Därför att ni bär er åt så ska jag hämnas! sa Simson till dem.
8 Och han anföll dem ursinnigt och dödade många. Sedan lämnade han dem och bosatte sig i en grotta vid Etam.
9 Filisteerna sände i sin tur ett stort uppbåd till Juda och de slog läger runt Lehi.
10 Varför har ni kommit hit? frågade då männen i Juda.För att ta Simson till fånga och göra med honom vad han har gjort mot oss, svarade de.
11 Tre tusen män från Juda marscherade då ner till Simson, där han bodde i grottan vid Etam.Vad är det du har gjort? frågade de honom. Vet du inte att det är filisteerna som råder över oss? Men Simson svarade: Jag betalade bara tillbaka för vad de gjort mot mig.
12-13 Vi har kommit hit för att ta dig till fånga och föra dig till filisteerna, sa männen till honom. Men ni måste lova att inte döda mig! sa Simson.Ja, svarade de. Det lovar vi.De band honom så med två nya rep och tog honom med sig.
14 När de kom till Lehi och filisteerna fick syn på honom ropade de av glädje. Men då kom Herrens Ande över Simson, och repen som han var bunden med slets av som lintrådar.
15 Sedan tog han upp benet av en åsnas käke som låg där på marken, och med detta dödade han tusen filisteer.
16-17 När han kastade ifrån sig åsnekäken, sa han:Med en åsnas käke har jag visat att de är åsnor. Med en åsnas käke har jag dödat tusen! Sedan dess har den platsen kallats Käkbenshöjden.
18 Men Simson hade blivit väldigt törstig, så han ropade till Gud och sa: Du har låtit Israel uppleva en stor seger i dag genom mig. Måste jag nu dö av törst och falla i dessa hedningars händer?
19 Då lät Herren vatten komma fram ur en fördjupning i marken, och Simson drack av det och kände sig styrkt. Den platsen kallas därför den bedjande mannens källa, och källan finns där än i dag.
20 Simson var Israels domare under de följande tjugo åren, men filisteerna fortsatte att behärska landet.

Samson’s Vengeance on the Philistines
15 Later on, at the time of wheat harvest,(A) Samson(B) took a young goat(C) and went to visit his wife. He said, “I’m going to my wife’s room.”(D) But her father would not let him go in.
2 “I was so sure you hated her,” he said, “that I gave her to your companion.(E) Isn’t her younger sister more attractive? Take her instead.”
3 Samson said to them, “This time I have a right to get even with the Philistines; I will really harm them.” 4 So he went out and caught three hundred foxes(F) and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch(G) to every pair of tails, 5 lit the torches(H) and let the foxes loose in the standing grain of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks(I) and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves.
6 When the Philistines asked, “Who did this?” they were told, “Samson, the Timnite’s son-in-law, because his wife was given to his companion.(J)”
So the Philistines went up and burned her(K) and her father to death.(L) 7 Samson said to them, “Since you’ve acted like this, I swear that I won’t stop until I get my revenge on you.” 8 He attacked them viciously and slaughtered many of them. Then he went down and stayed in a cave in the rock(M) of Etam.(N)
9 The Philistines went up and camped in Judah, spreading out near Lehi.(O) 10 The people of Judah asked, “Why have you come to fight us?”
“We have come to take Samson prisoner,” they answered, “to do to him as he did to us.”
11 Then three thousand men from Judah went down to the cave in the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines are rulers over us?(P) What have you done to us?”
He answered, “I merely did to them what they did to me.”
12 They said to him, “We’ve come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson said, “Swear to me(Q) that you won’t kill me yourselves.”
13 “Agreed,” they answered. “We will only tie you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes(R) and led him up from the rock. 14 As he approached Lehi,(S) the Philistines came toward him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.(T) The ropes on his arms became like charred flax,(U) and the bindings dropped from his hands. 15 Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.(V)
16 Then Samson said,
“With a donkey’s jawbone
I have made donkeys of them.[a](W)
With a donkey’s jawbone
I have killed a thousand men.”
17 When he finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was called Ramath Lehi.[b](X)
18 Because he was very thirsty, he cried out to the Lord,(Y) “You have given your servant this great victory.(Z) Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” 19 Then God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, his strength returned and he revived.(AA) So the spring(AB) was called En Hakkore,[c] and it is still there in Lehi.
20 Samson led[d] Israel for twenty years(AC) in the days of the Philistines.

15 But after a while, during the wheat-harvest season, Shimshon went to see his wife. He brought a young goat for her and said to her father, “I want to go to my wife in her room.” But he wouldn’t let him. 2 Her father said, “I really thought you hated her altogether, so I gave her to your best man. But her younger sister — isn’t she even prettier? Why not take her instead?” 3 Shimshon said to them, “This time I’m through with the P’lishtim! I’m going to do something terrible to them!” 4 So Shimshon went and caught three hundred foxes. Then he took torches, tied pairs of foxes to each other by their tails, and put a torch in the knot of every pair of tails. 5 Then he set the torches on fire and let the foxes loose in wheat fields of the P’lishtim. In this way he burned up the harvested wheat along with the grain waiting to be harvested, and the olive orchards as well. 6 The P’lishtim asked, “Who did this?” They answered, “Shimshon the son-in-law of the man from Timnah, because he took Shimshon’s wife and gave her to his best man.” Then the P’lishtim came up and burned both her and her father to death. 7 Shimshon said to them, “I will certainly have my revenge on you for doing such a thing; but after I do, I’ll stop.” 8 Infuriated, he began killing them right and left; it was a massacre. Then he went down and stayed in the cave at the ‘Eitam Rock.
9 The P’lishtim went up, pitched camp in Y’hudah and attacked Lechi. 10 The men of Y’hudah said, “Why are you attacking us?” They replied, “To arrest Shimshon, that’s why — to treat him the way he treated us.” 11 Then 3,000 men from Y’hudah went down to the cave at the Eitam Rock and said to Shimshon, “Don’t you know that the P’lishtim are our rulers? What are you doing to us?” He answered, “I’ve only treated them the way they treated me.” 12 They said to him, “We’ve come down to arrest you and hand you over to the P’lishtim.” Shimshon replied, “Swear to me that you won’t fall on me yourselves.” 13 They said to him, “No, but we will tie you up and hand you over to them. However, we promise not to kill you.” So they tied him up with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock. 14 When he got to Lechi, the P’lishtim came running and shouting at him; and the Spirit of Adonai came on him powerfully. The ropes on his arms became as weak as burnt flax and fell from his arms. 15 He found a fresh donkey jawbone, took it in his hand, and with it he struck down a thousand men. 16 Shimshon said,
“With the jawbone of a donkey I left heaps piled on heaps!
With the jawbone of a donkey I killed a thousand men!”
17 After he finished speaking he threw the jawbone away, and the place came to be called Ramat-Lechi [jawbone heights].
18 Then he felt very thirsty, so he called on Adonai, saying, “You accomplished this great rescue through your servant. But am I now to die from thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” 19 Then God made a gash in the crater at Lechi, and water came out. When he had drunk, his spirit came back; and he revived. This is why the place was called ‘Ein-HaKorei [the spring of him who called], and it is there in Lechi until now. 20 He judged Isra’el in the period of the P’lishtim for twenty years.
