Simsons bröllop och hans gåta
14 Simson gick ner till Timna, och där fick han se en kvinna, en av filisteernas döttrar. 2 När han kom tillbaka sade han till sin far och mor: "Jag har sett en kvinna i Timna, en av filisteernas döttrar. Hämta henne åt mig till hustru ." 3 Hans far och mor sade till honom: "Finns det då ingen kvinna bland dina bröders döttrar och i hela mitt folk, eftersom du vill gå bort och ta dig en hustru från de oomskurna filisteerna?" Simson sade till sin far: "Ge mig henne, för hon är den rätta i mina ögon." 4 Men hans far och mor visste inte att detta kom från Herren, som sökte en anledning till strid med filisteerna. På den tiden härskade nämligen filisteerna över Israel.
5 Simson gick med sin far och mor ner till Timna. Men just när de kom fram till vingårdarna vid Timna, kom ett ungt lejon rytande emot honom. 6 Då föll Herrens Ande över honom, och han slet sönder lejonet med bara händerna, som vore det en killing. Men han talade inte om för sin far och mor vad han hade gjort. 7 När han kom dit ner talade han med kvinnan, och hon var den rätta i Simsons ögon.
8 En tid därefter vände han tillbaka för att hämta henne och vek då av vägen för att se på det döda lejonet. Och se, det fanns en bisvärm och honung i lejonets kropp. 9 Han skrapade ut honungen i sina händer och åt av den medan han gick. Han kom till sin far och mor och gav till dem, och de åt. Men han talade inte om för dem att han hade skrapat honungen ur lejonets kropp.
10 Simsons far gick ner till kvinnan, och Simson ordnade en fest, för så brukade de unga männen göra. 11 När de fick se honom hämtade de trettio bröllopssvenner, som skulle vara tillsammans med honom. 12 Simson sade till dem: "Jag skall ge er en gåta. Om ni under de sju festdagarna ger mig lösningen på den och gissar rätt, skall jag ge er trettio fina linneskjortor och trettio högtidsdräkter. 13 Men om ni inte kan säga mig lösningen, skall ni ge mig trettio fina linneskjortor och trettio högtidsdräkter." De sade till honom: "Berätta, låt oss höra din gåta!"
14 Då sade han till dem:
"Från storätaren utgick ätbart,
från den starke kom sötma."
Men under tre dagar kunde de inte lösa gåtan.
15 På sjunde dagen sade de till Simsons hustru: "Locka din man att ge oss lösningen på gåtan, annars bränner vi upp dig och din fars hus. Ni har väl inte bjudit hit oss för att utarma oss?" 16 Och Simsons hustru låg över honom med gråt och sade: "Du hatar mig bara och älskar mig inte alls. Du har lagt fram en gåta för mina landsmän, men för mig har du inte talat om lösningen." Han svarade: "Varken för min far eller min mor har jag talat om lösningen. Skulle jag då tala om den för dig?" 17 Då hon legat över honom med gråt under de sju festdagarna, gav han henne lösningen den sjunde dagen eftersom hon pressade honom hårt. Sedan talade hon om den för sina landsmän. 18 Innan solen gick ner på sjunde dagen, gav männen i staden honom sitt svar:
"Vad är sötare än honung,
och vad är starkare än ett lejon?"
Då sade han till dem:
"Hade ni inte plöjt med min kviga,
hade ni inte gissat min gåta."
19 Herrens Ande kom över honom, och han gick ner till Askelon och slog ihjäl trettio män och tog deras kläder och gav högtidsdräkterna åt dem som hade sagt lösningen på gåtan. I stor vrede vände han tillbaka till sin fars hus. 20 Och Simsons hustru gavs åt den av hans bröllopssvenner som hade varit hans marskalk.

Samson’s Marriage
14 Samson(A) went down to Timnah(B) and saw there a young Philistine woman. 2 When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”(C)
3 His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people?(D) Must you go to the uncircumcised(E) Philistines to get a wife?(F)”
But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.” 4 (His parents did not know that this was from the Lord,(G) who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines;(H) for at that time they were ruling over Israel.)(I)
5 Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him(J) so that he tore the lion apart(K) with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and he liked her.
8 Some time later, when he went back to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion’s carcass, and in it he saw a swarm of bees and some honey. 9 He scooped out the honey with his hands and ate as he went along. When he rejoined his parents, he gave them some, and they too ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s carcass.
10 Now his father went down to see the woman. And there Samson held a feast,(L) as was customary for young men. 11 When the people saw him, they chose thirty men to be his companions.
12 “Let me tell you a riddle,(M)” Samson said to them. “If you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast,(N) I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.(O) 13 If you can’t tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.”
“Tell us your riddle,” they said. “Let’s hear it.”
14 He replied,
“Out of the eater, something to eat;
out of the strong, something sweet.”(P)
For three days they could not give the answer.
15 On the fourth[a] day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Coax(Q) your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death.(R) Did you invite us here to steal our property?”
16 Then Samson’s wife threw herself on him, sobbing, “You hate me! You don’t really love me.(S) You’ve given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.”
“I haven’t even explained it to my father or mother,” he replied, “so why should I explain it to you?” 17 She cried the whole seven days(T) of the feast. So on the seventh day he finally told her, because she continued to press him. She in turn explained the riddle to her people.
18 Before sunset on the seventh day the men of the town said to him,
“What is sweeter than honey?
What is stronger than a lion?”(U)
Samson said to them,
“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
you would not have solved my riddle.”
19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.(V) He went down to Ashkelon,(W) struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of everything and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger,(X) he returned to his father’s home. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to one of his companions(Y) who had attended him at the feast.

Samson’s First Marriage
14 Samson went down to the city of Timnah where he saw ·a Philistine woman [L one of the daughters of the Philistines]. 2 When he returned home, he said to his father and mother, “I saw ·a Philistine woman [L one of the daughers of the Philistines] in Timnah. I want you to get her for me so I can marry her.”
3 His father and mother answered, “·Surely there is [L Is there not…?] a woman from ·Israel [L the daughters of your brothers/relatives] you can marry. Do you have to marry a woman from the uncircumcised Philistines [Deut. 7:1–3]?”
But Samson said, “Get that woman for me! She is ·the one I want [L right in my eyes]!” 4 (Samson’s parents did not know that ·the Lord wanted this to happen [this was from the Lord] because he was looking for a ·way [opportunity] to challenge the Philistines, who were ruling over Israel at this time.) 5 Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, as far as the vineyard near there. ·Suddenly [T And behold], a young lion came roaring toward Samson! 6 The Spirit of the Lord ·entered Samson with great power [empowered/came upon/rushed upon him; 3:10; 6:34; 11:29], and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands. ·For him it was as easy as tearing apart [L …as one tears] a young goat. But Samson did not tell his father or mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down to the city and talked to the Philistine woman, and ·he liked her [L she was right in Samson’s eyes].
8 Several days later Samson went back to ·marry [get; take] her. On his way he went over to look at the body of the dead lion and ·found [T behold, there was] a swarm of bees and honey in it. 9 Samson ·got [scooped; scraped] some of the honey with his hands and walked along eating it. When he came to his parents, he gave some to them. They ate it, too, but Samson did not tell them he had ·taken [scooped; scraped] the honey from the body of the dead lion [C touching the carcass violated Samson’s Nazirite vow; 13:5, 7; Num. 6:6].
10 Samson’s father went down to see the Philistine woman. And Samson gave a feast, as was the custom for the ·bridegroom [L young men]. 11 When the people saw him, they sent thirty ·friends [companions; groomsmen] to be with him.
Samson’s Riddle
12 Samson said to them, “Let me tell you a riddle. Try to find the answer during the seven days of the feast. If you can, I will give you thirty linen ·shirts [garments] and thirty changes of clothes. 13 But if you can’t, you must give me thirty linen ·shirts [garments] and thirty changes of clothes.”
So they said, “Tell us your riddle so we can hear it.”
14 Samson said,
“Out of the eater comes something to eat.
Out of the strong comes something sweet.”
After three days, they had not ·found the answer [solved the riddle].
15 On the fourth[a] day they said to Samson’s wife, “Did you invite us here to make us poor? ·Trick [Entice; Coax] your husband into telling us the answer to the riddle. If you don’t, we will burn you and everyone in your father’s house.”
16 So Samson’s wife went to him, crying, and said, “You hate me! You don’t really love me! You told ·my people [L the sons of my people] a riddle, but you won’t tell me the answer.”
Samson said, “I haven’t even told my father or mother. Why should I tell you?”
17 Samson’s wife cried for the rest of the seven days of the feast. So he finally gave her the answer on the seventh day, because she kept ·bothering [nagging; pressing] him. Then she told ·her [L the sons of her] people the answer to the riddle.
18 Before sunset on the seventh day of the feast, the Philistine men had the answer. They came to Samson and said,
“What is sweeter than honey?
What is stronger than a lion?”
Then Samson said to them,
“If you had not plowed with my ·young cow [heifer; C referring to his wife],
you would not have solved my riddle!”
19 Then the Spirit of the Lord ·entered Samson and gave him great power [empowered/came upon/rushed upon him; v. 6]. Samson went down to the city of Ashkelon [C a Philistine capital] and killed thirty of its men and took all that they had and gave the clothes to the men who had answered his riddle. Then he went to his father’s house very angry. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to his best man [C one of those companions who had attended the feast].
