Jefta anfaller Efraims stam
12 Männen i Efraims stam samlades vid Safon och hotade Jefta: ”Varför bad du inte oss vara med i striden mot Ammon? Nu tänker vi bränna ner ditt hus och även dig!” 2 ”Jag kallade på er när jag och mitt folk stred hårt mot ammoniterna, men ni ville inte rädda mig”, svarade Jefta. 3 ”När jag såg att ni inte ville rädda mig, riskerade jag mitt liv och drog ut i strid mot ammoniterna och Herren gav dem i mitt våld. Vad ger det nu er för rätt att börja strida mot oss?”
4 Jefta samlade alla männen i Gilead och gav sig i strid mot efraimiterna. De besegrade efraimiterna som hade sagt: ”Ni gileaditer är bara flyktingar från Efraim och Manasse!” 5 Han besatte vadställena över Jordan bakom Efraims armé och varje gång en överlevande från Efraim försökte komma över floden, frågade gileaditerna: ”Tillhör du Efraims stam?” Den som nekade till detta, 6 uppmanades att säga ”shibbolet”[a]. Om det då blev ”sibbolet” i stället för ”shibbolet”, därför att han inte kunde uttala ordet rätt, dödades han omedelbart på vadstället. På så sätt föll 42 000 efraimiter.
7 Jefta var Israels domare i sex år och när gileaditen Jefta dog, begravde man honom i en av Gileads städer.
Ivsan
8 Näste domare i Israel hette Ivsan och bodde i Betlehem. 9 Han hade trettio söner och trettio döttrar. Han gifte bort sina döttrar med män utanför sin släkt och skaffade också utifrån trettio flickor som hustrur åt sina söner. I sju år var han domare i Israel 10 innan han dog. Han blev sedan begravd i Betlehem.
Elon
11 Efter honom blev Elon från Sebulon domare i tio år. 12 Efter sin död begravdes han i Ajalon i Sebulon.
Avdon
13 Näste domare hette Avdon från Piraton. Han var son till Hillel 14 och hade fyrtio söner och trettio sonsöner som red på sjuttio åsnor. I åtta år var han domare i Israel. 15 Sedan dog Avdon från Piraton, Hillels son, och begravdes i Piraton i Efraims land i amalekiternas bergsbygd.

Conflict with Ephraim
12 The men of Ephraim were called together and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon.(A) They said to Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight against the Ammonites but didn’t call us to go with you? We will burn your house down with you in it!”
2 Then Jephthah said to them, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the Ammonites. So I called for you, but you didn’t deliver me from their power. 3 When I saw that you weren’t going to deliver me, I took my life in my own hands and crossed over to the Ammonites, and the Lord handed them over to me. Why then have you come[a] today to fight against me?”
4 Then Jephthah gathered all of the men of Gilead. They fought and defeated Ephraim, because Ephraim had said, “You Gileadites are Ephraimite fugitives in the territories of Ephraim and Manasseh.” 5 The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim. Whenever a fugitive from Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” the Gileadites asked him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he answered, “No,” 6 they told him, “Please say Shibboleth.” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce it correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time 42,000 from Ephraim died.
7 Jephthah judged Israel six years, and when he died, he was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.[b]
Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon
8 Ibzan, who was from Bethlehem,(B) judged Israel after Jephthah 9 and had 30 sons. He gave his 30 daughters in marriage to men outside the tribe and brought back 30 wives for his sons from outside the tribe. Ibzan judged Israel seven years, 10 and when he died, he was buried in Bethlehem.
11 Elon, who was from Zebulun, judged Israel after Ibzan. He judged Israel 10 years, 12 and when he died, he was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13 After Elon, Abdon son of Hillel, who was from Pirathon,(C) judged Israel. 14 He had 40 sons and 30 grandsons, who rode on 70 donkeys. Abdon judged Israel eight years, 15 and when he died, he was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.(D)

Jephthah and Ephraim
12 The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon.(A) They said to Jephthah,(B) “Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you?(C) We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”
2 Jephthah answered, “I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. 3 When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands(D) and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory(E) over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?”
4 Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead(F) and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.(G)” 5 The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan(H) leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he replied, “No,” 6 they said, “All right, say ‘Shibboleth.’” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.
7 Jephthah led[a] Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.
Ibzan, Elon and Abdon
8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem(I) led Israel. 9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.
11 After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years. 12 Then Elon died and was buried in Aijalon(J) in the land of Zebulun.
13 After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon,(K) led Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons,(L) who rode on seventy donkeys.(M) He led Israel eight years. 15 Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.(N)
