Israel Has Been Given Canaan because of God’s Mercy

9 Listen, Israel, you’re about to cross the Jordan River. You’ll be forcing out nations that are larger and stronger than you, with big cities that have sky-high walls. ²Their people are tall and strong. They’re descendants of Anak. You know all about them. You’ve also heard it said, “Who can oppose the descendants of Anak?” ³Realize today that Yahweh your Elohim is the one who is going ahead of you like Esh Oklah. He will wipe them out and will use you to crush their power. You will take possession of their land and will quickly destroy them as Yahweh promised you.

⁴When Yahweh your Elohim expels these people in front of you, don’t say to yourselves, “Because we’ve been living right, Yahweh brought us here to take possession of this land.” No, it’s because these nations are so wicked that Yahweh is forcing them out of your way. ⁵It’s not because you’ve been living right or because you’re so honest that you’re entering to take possession of their land. It’s because these people are so wicked that Yahweh your Elohim is forcing them out of your way. It’s also because Yahweh wants to confirm the promise he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. ⁶So understand this: It’s not because you’ve been living right that Yahweh your Elohim is giving you this good land to possess. You are impossible to deal with!

⁷Never forget how you made Yahweh your Elohim angry in the desert. You’ve rebelled against Yahweh from the day you left Egypt until you came here. ⁸Even at Mount Horeb you made Yahweh so angry that Yahweh wanted to destroy you. ⁹When I went up on the mountain to get the stone tablets, the tablets of the promise that Yahweh made to you, I stayed on the mountain 40 days and 40 nights without food or water. ¹⁰Then Yahweh gave me the two stone tablets inscribed by Elohim himself. On them were written all the words that Yahweh spoke to you from the fire on the mountain on the day of the assembly.

¹¹At the end of the 40 days and 40 nights, Yahweh gave me the two stone tablets with his promise on them. ¹²Yahweh told me, “Leave right away. Your people whom you brought out of Egypt have ruined everything. They’ve quickly turned from the way I commanded them to live. They’ve made an idol for themselves.”

¹³Yahweh also said to me, “I’ve seen these people, and they are impossible to deal with. ¹⁴Leave me alone! I’ll destroy them and wipe their name off the earth. Then I’ll make you into a nation larger and stronger than they are.”

¹⁵So I turned and went down the mountain while it was still burning with fire. I was carrying the two tablets with the promise on them. ¹⁶Then I saw that you had sinned against Yahweh your Elohim. You had made a statue of a calf for yourselves. You had quickly turned from the way Yahweh commanded you to live. ¹⁷I took the two tablets, threw them down, and smashed them in front of you.

¹⁸Once again I threw myself down in front of Yahweh. I went without food and water for 40 days and 40 nights because of the sin you committed. You did what Yahweh considered evil and made him furious. ¹⁹I was terrified of Yahweh’s anger and fury. He was so angry he wanted to destroy you. But once more Yahweh listened to me.

²⁰Yahweh also became very angry with Aaron and wanted to destroy him. But at that time I prayed for Aaron, too.

²¹I took that sinful calf you made and burned it. I crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as powder. Then I threw the powder into the river that flowed down the mountain.

²²You also made Yahweh angry at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth Hattaavah.

²³When Yahweh sent you from Kadesh Barnea, he said, “Go and take possession of the land I’m giving you.” But you rebelled against the word of Yahweh your Elohim. You didn’t believe him or obey him. ²⁴You’ve rebelled against Yahweh as long as I’ve known you.

²⁵I threw myself down in front of Yahweh for 40 days and 40 nights because Yahweh said he would destroy you. ²⁶I prayed to Yahweh and said, “Adonay Yahweh, don’t destroy your people. They belong to you. You saved them by your great power and used your mighty hand to bring them out of Egypt. ²⁷Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Disregard the stubbornness, wickedness, and sin of these people. ²⁸Otherwise, the country we left will say, “Yahweh wasn’t able to bring them to the land he promised them. He hated them. That’s why he brought them out—to let them die in the desert.” ²⁹They are your people. They belong to you. You used your great strength and powerful arm to bring them out of Egypt.

Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness

9 Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan^(A) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,^(B) with large cities^(C) that have walls up to the sky.^(D) ²The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”^(E) ³But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you^(F) like a devouring fire.^(G) He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly,^(H) as the Lord has promised you.

⁴After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself,^(I) “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness^(J) of these nations^(K) that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. ⁵It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity^(L) that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness^(M) of these nations,^(N) the Lord your God will drive them out^(O) before you, to accomplish what he swore^(P) to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.^(Q) ⁶Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.^(R)

The Golden Calf

⁷Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger^(S) of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious^(T) against the Lord.^(U) ⁸At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath^(V) so that he was angry enough to destroy you.^(W) ⁹When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant^(X) that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days^(Y) and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.^(Z) ¹⁰The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God.^(AA) On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.^(AB)

¹¹At the end of the forty days and forty nights,^(AC) the Lord gave me the two stone tablets,^(AD) the tablets of the covenant. ¹²Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt.^(AE) They have turned away quickly^(AF) from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”

¹³And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people^(AG), and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! ¹⁴Let me alone,^(AH) so that I may destroy them and blot out^(AI) their name from under heaven.^(AJ) And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”

¹⁵So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.^(AK) ¹⁶When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.^(AL) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. ¹⁷So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.

¹⁸Then once again I fell^(AM) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,^(AN) because of all the sin you had committed,^(AO) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. ¹⁹I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.^(AP) But again the Lord listened to me.^(AQ) ²⁰And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. ²¹Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust^(AR) and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.^(AS)

²²You also made the Lord angry^(AT) at Taberah,^(AU) at Massah^(AV) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.^(AW)

²³And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,^(AX) he said, “Go up and take possession^(AY) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled^(AZ) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust^(BA) him or obey him. ²⁴You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.^(BB)

²⁵I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights^(BC) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.^(BD) ²⁶I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,^(BE) your own inheritance^(BF) that you redeemed^(BG) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.^(BH) ²⁷Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness^(BI) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. ²⁸Otherwise, the country^(BJ) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,^(BK) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’^(BL) ²⁹But they are your people,^(BM) your inheritance^(BN) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.^(BO)”

9 Écoute, Israël! Tu vas aujourd'hui passer le Jourdain, pour te rendre maître de nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi, de villes grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel,

²d'un peuple grand et de haute taille, les enfants d'Anak, que tu connais, et dont tu as entendu dire: Qui pourra tenir contre les enfants d'Anak?

³Sache aujourd'hui que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, marchera lui-même devant toi comme un feu dévorant, c'est lui qui les détruira, qui les humiliera devant toi; et tu les chasseras, tu les feras périr promptement, comme l'Éternel te l'a dit.

⁴Lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, les chassera devant toi, ne dis pas en ton coeur: C'est à cause de ma justice que l'Éternel me fait entrer en possession de ce pays. Car c'est à cause de la méchanceté de ces nations que l'Éternel les chasse devant toi.

⁵Non, ce n'est point à cause de ta justice et de la droiture de ton coeur que tu entres en possession de leur pays; mais c'est à cause de la méchanceté de ces nations que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, les chasse devant toi, et c'est pour confirmer la parole que l'Éternel a jurée à tes pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.

⁶Sache donc que ce n'est point à cause de ta justice que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne ce bon pays pour que tu le possèdes; car tu es un peuple au cou roide.

⁷Souviens-toi, n'oublie pas de quelle manière tu as excité la colère de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, dans le désert. Depuis le jour où tu es sorti du pays d'Égypte jusqu'à votre arrivée dans ce lieu, vous avez été rebelles contre l'Éternel.

⁸A Horeb, vous excitâtes la colère de l'Éternel; et l'Éternel s'irrita contre vous, et eut la pensée de vous détruire.

⁹Lorsque je fus monté sur la montagne, pour prendre les tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance que l'Éternel a traitée avec vous, je demeurai sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits, sans manger de pain et sans boire d'eau;

¹⁰et l'Éternel me donna les deux tables de pierre écrites du doigt de Dieu, et contenant toutes les paroles que l'Éternel vous avait dites sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, le jour de l'assemblée.

¹¹Ce fut au bout des quarante jours et des quarante nuits que l'Éternel me donna les deux tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance.

¹²L'Éternel me dit alors: Lève-toi, descends en hâte d'ici; car ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte, s'est corrompu. Ils se sont promptement écartés de la voie que je leur avais prescrite; ils se sont fait une image de fonte.

¹³L'Éternel me dit: Je vois que ce peuple est un peuple au cou roide.

¹⁴Laisse-moi les détruire et effacer leur nom de dessous les cieux; et je ferai de toi une nation plus puissante et plus nombreuse que ce peuple.

¹⁵Je retournai et je descendis de la montagne tout en feu, les deux tables de l'alliance dans mes deux mains.

¹⁶Je regardai, et voici, vous aviez péché contre l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous vous étiez fait un veau de fonte, vous vous étiez promptement écartés de la voie que vous avait prescrite l'Éternel.

¹⁷Je saisis les deux tables, je les jetai de mes mains, et je les brisai sous vos yeux.

¹⁸Je me prosternai devant l'Éternel, comme auparavant, quarante jours et quarante nuits, sans manger de pain et sans boire d'eau, à cause de tous les péchés que vous aviez commis en faisant ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, pour l'irriter.

¹⁹Car j'étais effrayé à la vue de la colère et de la fureur dont l'Éternel était animé contre vous jusqu'à vouloir vous détruire. Mais l'Éternel m'exauça encore cette fois.

²⁰L'Éternel était aussi très irrité contre Aaron, qu'il voulait faire périr, et pour qui j'intercédai encore dans ce temps-là.

²¹Je pris le veau que vous aviez fait, ce produit de votre péché, je le brûlai au feu, je le broyai jusqu'à ce qu'il fût réduit en poudre, et je jetai cette poudre dans le torrent qui descend de la montagne.

²²A Tabeéra, à Massa, et à Kibroth Hattaava, vous excitâtes la colère de l'Éternel.

²³Et lorsque l'Éternel vous envoya à Kadès Barnéa, en disant: Montez, et prenez possession du pays que je vous donne! vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous n'eûtes point foi en lui, et vous n'obéîtes point à sa voix.

²⁴Vous avez été rebelles contre l'Éternel depuis que je vous connais.

²⁵Je me prosternai devant l'Éternel, je me prosternai quarante jours et quarante nuits, parce que l'Éternel avait dit qu'il voulait vous détruire.

²⁶Je priai l'Éternel, et je dis: Seigneur Éternel, ne détruis pas ton peuple, ton héritage, que tu as racheté dans ta grandeur, que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte par ta main puissante.

²⁷Souviens-toi de tes serviteurs, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. Ne regarde point à l'opiniâtreté de ce peuple, à sa méchanceté et à son péché,

²⁸de peur que le pays d'où tu nous as fait sortir ne dise: C'est parce que l'Éternel n'avait pas le pouvoir de les mener dans le pays qu'il leur avait promis, et c'est parce qu'il les haïssait, qu'il les a fait sortir pour les faire mourir dans le désert.

²⁹Ils sont pourtant ton peuple et ton héritage, que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte par ta grande puissance et par ton bras étendu.

Why God helps his people

9 Moses said:

Listen, Israelites! You will soon go across the Jordan River. You will chase away the people who live there in large cities with very high walls around them. Those nations of people are greater and stronger than you are. ²You know about the Anakites who live there. They are strong and tall. You have heard people say, ‘No one can fight against the Anakites and win.’

³But you must understand this: The Lord your God is leading you across the river. He is like a fire that destroys everything! He will win against your enemies. He will give you power over them. Then you will chase them away and remove them quickly. The Lord has promised you that this will happen.

⁴The Lord your God will chase them away. After he has done that, be careful! Do not say to yourselves, ‘The Lord has brought us into this land because we do right things.’

No! It is because these nations are doing wicked things. That is why the Lord is chasing them out of the land so that you can live there. ⁵It is not because you are doing right things. It is not because you are good, honest people. That is not the reason that you will take their land for yourselves. Instead, it is because these nations are wicked people. That is why the Lord your God will chase them away as you move in there. He will do what he promised to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. ⁶You must understand this. The Lord your God is not giving you this good land to live in because you are doing right things. No! You are proud people who do not want to obey me.

The gold calf

⁷Remember how you made the Lord your God angry when you were in the desert. Never forget that! Since you left Egypt, you have always turned against the Lord your God. You have continued to make him angry all the time until you arrived here. ⁸When you were at Sinai you made him angry enough to destroy you. ⁹I climbed the mountain to meet with the Lord. I received the two flat stones with the covenant that he had made with you. I stayed there for 40 days and nights. During that time, I did not eat or drink anything. ¹⁰Then the Lord gave the two flat stones to me. He had written all his commands on the stones with his own finger. The Lord spoke those commands to you from middle of the fire. That was on the day when you all came together at the mountain.

¹¹After those 40 days and nights, the Lord gave me the two flat stones. They had his covenant on them. ¹²Then the Lord said to me, ‘Now go down the mountain! The people that you led out of Egypt have done something very bad. They have already refused to obey my commands. They have used gold to make an idol for themselves.’

¹³The Lord also said to me, ‘I know what these people are like! They are proud people who do not want to obey me. ¹⁴Keep away from me! I will now destroy them! Then no one on the earth will remember them at all. Instead, Moses, I will make your descendants into a nation that is stronger and larger than they are.’

¹⁵So I turned and I went down the mountain. It was still burning with fire. I held the two stones with the covenant on them in my hands. ¹⁶When I looked, I saw that you had made an image of a calf as your idol. You really had done a very bad thing. You had quickly stopped doing the things that the Lord your God had commanded you to do. ¹⁷When I saw that, I threw the two flat stones down onto the ground. I broke them into pieces while you watched.

¹⁸Then I again fell down with my face on the ground, to pray to the Lord. I did that for 40 days and nights. I did not eat or drink anything. You had done an evil thing which caused the Lord to be very angry. ¹⁹I prayed, because the Lord had said that he would destroy you. He was so angry with you that I was very afraid. But the Lord listened to me this time too.

²⁰The Lord was also angry with my brother Aaron. He wanted to kill Aaron. But at that time, I prayed for Aaron too.

²¹When you made that idol, it was a sin that you did. So I took that gold calf and I burned it in the fire. Then I beat it into powder, like dust. I threw the powder into a stream that ran down from the mountain.

²²After that, you also caused the Lord to be angry with you at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth-Hattaavah. ²³When the Lord sent you out from Kadesh-Barnea, he said, ‘Go into the land that I have given to you and live there.’ But you turned against the Lord your God. You refused to trust him or obey him. ²⁴You have refused to obey the Lord ever since I have known you.

²⁵So I lay down on the ground for those 40 days and nights. I prayed to the Lord because he had said that he would destroy you.

²⁶I prayed this prayer: ‘Almighty Lord, do not destroy your people! They belong to you as your special people. You used your great power and strength to rescue them from Egypt. ²⁷Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Do not think about these proud people who are so wicked. Please forgive their sins. ²⁸If you destroy your people, the Egyptians will say, “The Lord could not take them into the land that he promised to give to them. Instead, he took them into the desert so that he could kill them there. He did this because he hated them!”

²⁹Please remember that they belong to you as your own special people. You used your strength and your power to rescue them.’

The Consequences of Rebelling against God

9 Hear, O Israel! You are about to cross the Jordan today, to go in and dispossess nations larger and mightier than you, great cities, fortified to the heavens, ²a strong and tall people, the offspring of the Anakim, whom you know. You have heard it said of them, “Who can stand up to the Anakim?” ³Know then today that the Lord your God is the one who crosses over before you as a devouring fire; he will defeat them and subdue them before you, so that you may dispossess and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.

⁴When the Lord your God thrusts them out before you, do not say to yourself, “It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to occupy this land”; it is rather because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you. ⁵It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to occupy their land; but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is dispossessing them before you, in order to fulfill the promise that the Lord made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

⁶Know, then, that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to occupy because of your righteousness; for you are a stubborn people. ⁷Remember and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness; you have been rebellious against the Lord from the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place.

⁸Even at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that he was ready to destroy you. ⁹When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord made with you, I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water. ¹⁰And the Lord gave me the two stone tablets written with the finger of God; on them were all the words that the Lord had spoken to you at the mountain out of the fire on the day of the assembly. ¹¹At the end of forty days and forty nights the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. ¹²Then the Lord said to me, “Get up, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you have brought from Egypt have acted corruptly. ¹⁵So I turned and went down from the mountain, while the mountain was ablaze; the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. ¹⁶Then I saw that you had indeed sinned against the Lord your God, by casting for yourselves an image of a calf; you had been quick to turn from the way that the Lord had commanded you. ¹⁷So I took hold of the two tablets and flung them from my two hands, smashing them before your eyes. ¹⁸Then I lay prostrate before the Lord as before, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin you had committed, provoking the Lord by doing what was evil in his sight. ¹⁹For I was afraid that the anger that the Lord bore against you was so fierce that he would destroy you. But the Lord listened to me that time also. ²⁰The Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him, but I interceded also on behalf of Aaron at that same time. ²¹Then I took the sinful thing you had made, the calf, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly, until it was reduced to dust; and I threw the dust of it into the stream that runs down the mountain.

²²At Taberah also, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, you provoked the Lord to wrath. ²³And when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, “Go up and occupy the land that I have given you,” you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God, neither trusting him nor obeying him. ²⁴You have been rebellious against the Lord as long as he has^[a] known you.

²⁵Throughout the forty days and forty nights that I lay prostrate before the Lord when the Lord intended to destroy you, ²⁶I prayed to the Lord and said, “Lord God, do not destroy the people who are your very own possession, whom you redeemed in your greatness, whom you brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²⁷Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; pay no attention to the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin, ²⁸otherwise the land from which you have brought us might say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to let them die in the wilderness.’ ²⁹For they are the people of your very own possession, whom you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.”
