百姓悖逆
9 「以色列啊，你要聽！你今日要過約旦河，進去佔領比你更強大的列國，那裏的城鎮又大，城牆又堅固，如天一樣高。 2 那裏的百姓是亞衲族人，又高又壯，是你所知道的；你也聽說過：『誰能在亞衲族人面前站立得住呢？』 3 你今日應當知道，耶和華—你的 神在你前面渡過去，如同吞噬的火，要除滅他們，並要在你面前將他們制伏，使你可以趕出他們，速速消滅他們，正如耶和華向你所說的。
4 「耶和華—你的 神將他們從你面前趕出以後，你心裏不可說：『耶和華領我得這地是因我的義。』其實，耶和華將這些國家從你面前趕出去是因他們的惡。 5 你能進去得他們的地，並不是因你的義，也不是因你心裏正直，而是因這些國家的惡，耶和華—你的 神才把他們從你面前趕出去，為了應驗耶和華向你列祖亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各起誓應許的話。」

6 「你當知道，耶和華—你的 神將這美地賜你為業，並不是因你的義；你本是硬着頸項的百姓。 7 你要記得，不要忘記，你在曠野怎樣惹耶和華—你的 神發怒。自從你出了埃及地的那日，直到你們來到這地方，你們常常悖逆耶和華。 8 你們在何烈山惹耶和華發怒，耶和華對你們動怒，甚至要除滅你們。 9 我上了山，要領受兩塊石版，就是耶和華與你們立約的版。那時我在山上住了四十晝夜，沒有吃飯，也沒有喝水。 10 耶和華把那兩塊石版交給我，是 神用指頭寫成的；版上是耶和華在大會的那一天，在山上從火中對你們所說的一切話。 11 過了四十晝夜，耶和華把那兩塊石版，就是約版，交給我。 12 耶和華對我說：『起來，趕快從這裏下去！因為你從埃及領出來的百姓已經敗壞了；他們這麼快偏離了我所吩咐的道，為自己鑄造偶像。』
13 「耶和華對我說：『我看這百姓，看哪，他們是硬着頸項的百姓。 14 你且由着我，我要除滅他們，從天下塗去他們的名，我要使你成為比他們更大更強的國。』 15 於是我轉身下山，山上有火燃燒，兩塊約版在我雙手中。 16 我觀看，看哪，你們得罪了耶和華—你們的 神，為自己鑄成了一頭牛犢，迅速偏離了耶和華所吩咐你們的道， 17 我拿着那兩塊石版，從我雙手中扔出去，在你們眼前把它們摔碎了。 18 因為你們所犯的一切罪，做了耶和華眼中看為惡的事，惹他發怒，我就像從前一樣俯伏在耶和華面前四十晝夜，沒有吃飯，沒有喝水。 19 我很害怕，因為耶和華向你們大發烈怒，要除滅你們。但那一次耶和華又應允了我。 20 耶和華也向亞倫非常生氣，甚至要除滅他；那時我也為亞倫祈禱。 21 我把那使你們犯罪所鑄的牛犢拿來，用火焚燒，搗碎後再磨成粉末，好像灰塵。我把這灰塵撒在從山上流下來的溪水中。
22 「你們在他備拉、瑪撒、基博羅‧哈他瓦又惹耶和華發怒。 23 耶和華叫你們離開加低斯‧巴尼亞，說：『你們上去得我所賜給你們的地。』那時，你們違背了耶和華—你們 神的指示，不信服他，不聽從他的話。 24 自從我認識你們的日子以來，你們常常悖逆耶和華。[a]
25 「我因耶和華說要除滅你們，就在耶和華面前俯伏四十晝夜，像我以前俯伏一樣。 26 我向耶和華祈禱，說：『主耶和華啊，求你不要滅絕你的百姓，你的產業。他們是你用大能救贖，用你強有力的手從埃及領出來的。 27 求你記念你的僕人亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各，不看這百姓的頑梗、邪惡、罪愆， 28 免得你領我們出來的那地之人說：耶和華因為不能將這百姓領進他所應許之地，又因恨他們，所以領他們出去，要在曠野殺他們。 29 其實他們是你的百姓，你的產業，是你用大能和伸出的膀臂領出來的。』」

9 “हे इस्राएलांनो ऐका, तुम्ही आज यार्देन नदी पलीकडे जाणार आहात. तुमच्यापेक्षा मोठी आणि शक्तिशाली अशी राष्ट्रे ताब्यात घेणार आहात. तेथील नगरे मोठी आहेत. त्यांची तटबंदी आकाशाला भिडलेली आहे. 2 तेथील अनाकी वंशाचे लोक उंच आणि धिप्पाड आहेत. हे तुम्हाला माहीत आहेच. त्यांचा पाडाव कोणी करु शकणार नाही असे त्यांच्याबद्दल आपल्या हेरांनी म्हटलेले तुम्ही ऐकलेले आहे. 3 पण तुमचा देव परमेश्वर नदी उतरुन आधी तुमच्यापुढे जाणार आहे ह्याची खात्री बाळगा. आणि विध्वंस करणाऱ्या अग्नीसारखा तो आहे. तो राष्ट्रांचा विध्वंस करील. त्या राष्ट्रांना तुमच्यापुढे नमवेल. मग तुम्ही त्यांना घालवून द्याल, त्यांचा तात्काळ पराभव कराल. हे घडणार आहे, असे परमेश्वराने वचनच दिले आहे.
4 “तुमचा देव परमेश्वर त्या राष्ट्रांना तुमच्यापुढून हुसकावून लावेल. पण ‘आमच्या पुण्याईमुळेच परमेश्वराने हा प्रदेश आमच्या ताब्यात दिला’ असे मनात आणू नका. कारण ते खोटे आहे. परमेश्वराने त्यांना घालवले ते त्यांच्या दुष्टपणामुळे, तुमच्या सात्विकपणामुळे नव्हे. 5 तुम्ही फार चांगले आहा आणि योग्य मार्गाने जगता म्हणून तुम्ही येथे राहायला जाणार आहात असे नाही. त्यांच्या दुष्टपणामुळे तुमचा देव परमेश्वर त्यांना घालवून देत आहे आणि अब्राहाम, इसहाक व याकोब या पूर्वजांना दिलेला शब्द तो पाळत आहे. 6 तेव्हा तुमचा चांगूलपणा याला कारणीभूत नाही. उलट, खरे सांगायचे तर तुम्ही फार हटृी लोक आहात.
परमेश्वराचा राग आठवा
7 “रानात असताना तुम्ही तुमच्या परमेश्वर देवाचा कोप ओढवून घेतला होता. मिसर सोडल्या दिवसापासून ते इथे येईपर्यंत तुम्ही परमेश्वराच्या आज्ञेविरुद्ध बंड करीत आलेले आहात. 8 होरेबात तुम्ही त्याला क्रुद्ध केलेत. तेव्हाच तो तुमचा नाश करणार होता. 9 त्याचे असे झाले. परमेश्वराने तुमच्याशी केलेला पवित्र करार दगडी पाट्यांवर खोदून शब्दबद्ध केला होता. त्या पाट्या आणायला मी डोंगरावर चढून गेलो. तेथे मी चाळीस दिवस अन् चाळीस रात्री अन्नपाणी न घेता राहिलो. 10 परमेश्वराने त्या पाट्या माझ्या हवाली केल्या. परमेश्वराने आपल्या हाताने त्या पाट्यांवर त्याच्या आज्ञा लिहिल्या. तुम्ही पर्वतापाशी जमलेले असताना देव अग्नीतून तुमच्याशी जे बोलला ते सर्व त्याने लिहिले
11 “चाळीस दिवस, चाळीस रात्रीअखेर त्याने त्या आज्ञापटाच्या पाट्या मला दिल्या. 12 तो म्हणाला, ‘ऊठ आणि ताबडतोब खाली जा. मिसरहून तू आणलेले लोक बिघडले आहेत. इतक्यातच ते माझ्या आज्ञांपासून ढळले आहेत. त्यांनी सोने वितळवून मूर्ती केली आहे.’
13 “तो असेही म्हणाला, ‘त्यांचे मी एक पाहून ठेवले आहे. ते फार हट्टी आहेत. 14 त्यांची नावनिशाणीही राहणार नाही असा मला त्यांचा नाश कुरु दे. मग मी तुझे, त्यांचाहून श्रेष्ठ आणि समर्थ असे दुसरे राष्ट्र उभारीन.’

15 “मग मी मागे फिरुन डोंगर उतरुन आलो. डोंगरावर आग धगधगत होती. माझ्या हातात आज्ञापटाच्या दोन पाट्या होत्या. 16 “मी पाहिले की तुमचा देव परमेश्वर याच्या इच्छेविरुद्ध वागून तुम्ही पाप केले होते. तुम्ही वासराची सोन्याची ओतीव मूर्ती केली होती. तुम्ही परमेश्वर देवाच्या आज्ञा पाळण्याचे थांबविलेत! 17 तेव्हा मी धरलेल्या त्या आज्ञापटाच्या पाट्या हातातून फेकून दिल्या आणि तुमच्या समोर त्यांच्या ठिकऱ्या ठिकऱ्या केल्या. 18 मग मी परमेश्वरापुढे जमिनीवर डोके टेकून पूर्वीप्रमाणेच चाळीस दिवस अन् चाळीस रात्र पालथा पडून राहिलो. तुमच्या घोर पापामुळे मी हे केले. परमेश्वराच्या दृष्टिने तुम्ही हे फार वाईट केले आणि परमेश्वराचा कोप ओढवून घेतलात. 19 परमेश्वराच्या कोपाची मला भिती वाटत होती कारण संतापाच्या भरात त्याने तुमचा संहार केला असता. पण या ही वेळी परमेश्वराने माझे ऐकले. 20 अहरोनला तर तो संतापाने ठारच करणार होता. पण मी त्याच्यांसाठी प्रार्थना केली. 21 मग तुमचे ते पापीकृत्य तुम्ही केलेली वासराची मूर्ती मी आगीत जाळून टाकली. नंतर तिचे तुकडे तुकडे करुन भस्म करुन टाकले व डोंगरावरुन वाहाणाऱ्या ओढ्यात फेकून दिले.
इस्राएल लोकांना क्षमा करणे बाबत मोशे देवाला विनंती करतो
22 “नंतर तबेरा, मस्सा व किब्रोथ-हत्तव्वा येथेही तुम्ही परमेश्वराला संतप्त केलेत. 23 परमेश्वराने तुम्हाला कादेश-बर्ण्या सोडण्यास सांगितले तेव्हाही तुम्ही त्याचे ऐकले नाहीत. त्याने तुम्हाला तो देत असलेला प्रदेश काबीज करायला सांगितले पण त्याचे सांगणे ऐकले नाहीत. त्याच्यावर भरवसा ठेवला नाहीत. त्याची आज्ञा पाळली नाहीत. 24 जेव्हापासून मी तुम्हाला ओळखतो तेव्हापासून तुम्ही परमेश्वराचे ऐकण्यासाठी नेहमीच नकार दिलेला आहे.
25 “तेव्हा मी त्याच्या पायाशी चाळीस दिवस अन् चाळीस रात्री पडून राहिलो. कारण तुमचा नाश करीन असे तो म्हणाला होता. 26 मी त्याची विनवणी केली की हे प्रभो तुझ्या प्रजेचा नाश करु नकोस. ती तुझीच आहे. तुझ्या सामर्थ्याने तू त्यांना मिसरमधून मुक्त करुन बाहेर आणले आहेस. 27 अब्राहाम, इसहाक आणि याकोब या तुझ्या सेवकांना तू शब्द दिला आहेस तो आठव. त्यांचा ताठरपणा विसरुन जा. त्यांची पापे किंवा दुराचार यांच्याकडे दुर्लक्ष कर. 28 तू त्यांना शासन केलेस तर मिसरमधील लोकं म्हणतील, ‘परमेश्वर त्यांना स्वतःच कबूल केलेल्या प्रदेशात नेऊ शकला नाही. त्यांचा तो द्वेष करत होता. म्हणून मारुन टाकण्यासाठीच त्याने त्यांना रानात आणले.’ 29 पण हे लोक तुझेच आहेत. तू त्यांना महासामर्थ्याने आपण होऊन मिसर मधून बाहेर आणले आहेस.

Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness
9 Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan(A) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,(B) with large cities(C) that have walls up to the sky.(D) 2 The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”(E) 3 But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you(F) like a devouring fire.(G) He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly,(H) as the Lord has promised you.
4 After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself,(I) “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness(J) of these nations(K) that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity(L) that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness(M) of these nations,(N) the Lord your God will drive them out(O) before you, to accomplish what he swore(P) to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.(Q) 6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.(R)
The Golden Calf
7 Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger(S) of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious(T) against the Lord.(U) 8 At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath(V) so that he was angry enough to destroy you.(W) 9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant(X) that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days(Y) and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.(Z) 10 The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God.(AA) On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.(AB)
11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights,(AC) the Lord gave me the two stone tablets,(AD) the tablets of the covenant. 12 Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt.(AE) They have turned away quickly(AF) from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”
13 And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people(AG), and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14 Let me alone,(AH) so that I may destroy them and blot out(AI) their name from under heaven.(AJ) And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”
15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.(AK) 16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.(AL) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.
18 Then once again I fell(AM) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,(AN) because of all the sin you had committed,(AO) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.(AP) But again the Lord listened to me.(AQ) 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust(AR) and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.(AS)
22 You also made the Lord angry(AT) at Taberah,(AU) at Massah(AV) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.(AW)
23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,(AX) he said, “Go up and take possession(AY) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled(AZ) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust(BA) him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.(BB)
25 I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights(BC) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.(BD) 26 I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,(BE) your own inheritance(BF) that you redeemed(BG) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(BH) 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness(BI) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28 Otherwise, the country(BJ) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,(BK) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’(BL) 29 But they are your people,(BM) your inheritance(BN) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.(BO)”
