Deuteronomy 9
Living Bible
9 1-2 “O Israel, listen! Today you are to cross the Jordan River and begin to dispossess the nations on the other side. Those nations are much greater and more powerful than you are! They live in high walled cities. Among them are the famed Anak giants, against whom none can stand! 3 But the Lord your God will go before you as a devouring fire to destroy them, so that you will quickly conquer them and drive them out.
4 “Then, when the Lord has done this for you, don’t say to yourselves, ‘The Lord has helped us because we are so good!’ No, it is because of the wickedness of the other nations that he is doing it. 5 It is not at all because you are such fine, upright people that the Lord will drive them out from before you! I say it again, it is only because of the wickedness of the other nations, and because of his promises to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he will do it. 6 I say it yet again: Jehovah your God is not giving you this good land because you are good, for you are not—you are a wicked, stubborn people.
7 “Don’t you remember (oh, never forget it!) how continually angry you made the Lord your God out in the wilderness, from the day you left Egypt until now? For all this time you have constantly rebelled against him.
8 “Don’t you remember how angry you made him at Mount Horeb? He was ready to destroy you. 9 I was on the mountain at the time, receiving the contract which Jehovah had made with you—the stone tablets with the laws inscribed upon them. I was there for forty days and forty nights, and all that time I ate nothing. I didn’t even take a drink of water. 10-11 At the end of those forty days and nights the Lord gave me the contract, the tablets on which he had written the commandments he had spoken from the fire-covered mountain while the people had watched below. 12 He told me to go down quickly because the people I had led out of Egypt had defiled themselves, quickly turning away from the laws of God, and had made an idol from molten metal.
13-14 “‘Let me alone that I may destroy this evil, stubborn people!’ the Lord told me, ‘and I will blot out their name from under heaven, and I will make a mighty nation of you, mightier and greater than they are.’
15 “I came down from the burning mountain, holding in my hands the two tablets inscribed with the laws of God. 16 There below me I could see the calf you had made in your terrible sin against the Lord your God. How quickly you turned away from him! 17 I lifted the tablets high above my head and dashed them to the ground! I smashed them before your eyes! 18 Then, for another forty days and nights I lay before the Lord, neither eating bread nor drinking water, for you had done what the Lord hated most, thus provoking him to great anger. 19 How I feared for you—for the Lord was ready to destroy you. But that time, too, he listened to me. 20 Aaron was in great danger because the Lord was so angry with him; but I prayed, and the Lord spared him. 21 I took your sin—the calf you had made—and burned it and ground it into fine dust, and threw it into the stream that cascaded out of the mountain.
22 “Again at Taberah and once again at Massah you angered the Lord, and yet again at Kibroth-hattaavah. 23 At Kadesh-barnea, when the Lord told you to enter the land he had given you, you rebelled and wouldn’t believe that he would help you; you refused to obey him. 24 Yes, you have been rebellious against the Lord from the first day I knew you. 25 That is why I fell down before him for forty days and nights when the Lord was ready to destroy you.
26 “I prayed to him, ‘O Lord God, don’t destroy your own people. They are your inheritance saved from Egypt by your mighty power and glorious strength. 27 Don’t notice the rebellion and stubbornness of these people, but remember instead your promises to your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Oh, please overlook the awful wickedness and sin of these people. 28 For if you destroy them, the Egyptians will say, “It is because the Lord wasn’t able to bring them to the land he promised them,” or “He destroyed them because he hated them: he brought them into the wilderness to slay them.” 29 They are your people and your inheritance that you brought from Egypt by your great power and your mighty arm.’

9 “Pamati, katawhan sa Israel. Hapit na kamo motabok sa Jordan aron panag-iyahon ang mga nasod nga mas dagko ug mas gamhanan pa kay kaninyo. Ang ilang mga lungsod dagko ug may tag-as nga mga paril nga daw moabot na sa langit. 2 Ang ilang mga lumulupyo kusgan ug tag-as—mga kaliwat ni Anak! Nahibaloan usab ninyo ang bahin sa mga kaliwat ni Anak ug nadungog ninyo nga walay makasukol kanila. 3 Apan karon makita ninyo nga ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios magauna kaninyo sa pagtabok. Sama siya sa kalayo nga molamoy sa inyong mga kaaway. Pildihon niya sila aron sayon ninyo silang mapapahawa ug malaglag sumala sa gisaad sa Ginoo kaninyo.
4 “Kon mapapahawa na sila sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios sa inyong atubangan, ayaw kamo pag-ingon sa inyong kaugalingon, ‘Gidala kita dinhi sa Ginoo sa pagpanag-iya niining yutaa tungod kay matarong kita.’ Dili kana mao. Papahawaon sila sa Ginoo tungod kay daotan sila nga mga nasod. 5 Panag-iyahan ninyo ang ilang yuta dili tungod kay matarong o maayo kamong mga tawo kondili tungod kay daotan sila, ug aron matuman sa Ginoo ang iyang gisaad sa inyong mga katigulangan nga si Abraham, Isaac, ug Jacob. 6 Busa hinumdomi ninyo nga gihatag kaninyo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios kining maayong yuta nga inyong panag-iyahon, dili tungod kay mga matarong kamo, kay sa tinuod lang, mga gahi kamog ulo.
7 “Hinumdomi ninyo kon giunsa ninyo pagpasuko ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios didto sa kamingawan. Gikan sa adlaw nga migawas kamo gikan sa Ehipto hangtod karon kanunay lang kamong nagasupak sa Ginoo. 8 Bisan didto sa Bukid sa Sinai,[a] gipasuko ninyo ang Ginoo, ug sa iyang kalagot kaninyo gusto na unta niya kamong pamatyon. 9 Sa dihang mitungas ako sa bukid sa pagdawat sa lagpad nga mga bato diin nasulat ang kasabotan sa Ginoo nga iyang gihimo alang kaninyo, nagpabilin ako didto sulod sa 40 ka adlaw ug 40 ka gabii nga wala mokaon ug moinom. 10 Gihatag sa Ginoo kanako ang duha ka lagpad nga bato nga iyang gisulatan sa tanang mga pulong nga gisulti niya kaninyo gikan sa taliwala sa kalayo didto sa Bukid sa Sinai niadtong adlaw nga nagtigom kamo.
11 “Pagkahuman sa 40 ka adlaw ug 40 ka gabii, gihatag sa Ginoo kanako ang duha ka lagpad nga bato diin nasulat ang kasabotan. 12 Unya miingon ang Ginoo kanako, ‘Kanaog ug pagdali ug lugsong kay ang imong katawhan nga imong gipangulohan sa paggawas sa Ehipto nahimo nang daotan. Dali silang mitalikod sa akong gisugo kanila ug naghimo sila ug dios-dios aron ilang simbahon.’
13 “Miingon pa gayod ang Ginoo kanako, ‘Nakita ko kon unsa kagahig ulo kining mga tawhana. 14 Pasagdi nga laglagon ko sila aron dili na sila mahinumdoman pa. Unya himuon ko ikaw ug ang imong mga kaliwat nga usa ka nasod nga mas gamhanan ug mas daghan pa kay kanila.’
15 “Busa milugsong ako gikan sa nagadilaab nga bukid dala ang duha ka lagpad nga bato diin nasulat ang kasabotan. 16 Ug nakita ko kamo nga nagpakasala sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios. Naghimo kamog dios-dios nga toriyong baka. Kadali ninyong mitalikod sa mga gisugo sa Ginoo kaninyo. 17 Busa sa inyong atubangan gibundak ko ang duha ka lagpad nga bato ug nangadugmok kini.
18 “Unya mihapa ako sa presensya sa Ginoo sulod sa 40 ka adlaw ug 40 ka gabii nga wala mokaon ug moinom, tungod sa tanan ninyong mga sala nga gihimo. Daotan gayod kini atubangan sa Ginoo ug nakapasuko gayod kini kaniya. 19 Nahadlok ako sa labihang kasuko sa Ginoo batok kaninyo, kay tingali ug pamatyon niya kamo. Apan gipamatian gihapon ako sa Ginoo. 20 Ug labihan usab ang kasuko sa Ginoo kang Aaron ug gusto usab niya kining patyon, apan niadtong panahona nagaampo usab ako alang kaniya. 21 Unya gikuha ko ang baka nga inyong gihimo, nga nagtukmod kaninyo sa pagpakasala, ug gitunaw ko kini sa kalayo. Pagkahuman gidugmok ko kini pag-ayo sama kapino sa abog, ug gisabwag sa lugut nga nagadagayday gikan sa bukid.
22 “Gipasuko usab ninyo ang Ginoo didto sa Tabera, sa Masa, ug sa Kibrot Hataava.
23 “Sa dihang gipabiya kamo sa Ginoo gikan sa Kadesh Barnea miingon siya kaninyo, ‘Lakaw kamo ug panag-iyaha na ninyo ang yuta nga gihatag ko kaninyo.’ Apan misupak kamo; wala ninyo tumana ang sugo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios. Wala kamo mosalig o motuman kaniya. 24 Sukad sa akong pagkaila kaninyo pulos lang pagsupak sa Ginoo ang inyong gihimo.
25 “Mao kadto nga mihapa ako didto sa presensya sa Ginoo sulod sa 40 ka adlaw ug 40 ka gabii tungod kay miingon ang Ginoo nga laglagon niya kamo. 26 Nagaampo ako sa Ginoo, ‘O Ginoong Dios, ayaw laglaga ang katawhan nga imong gipanag-iya. Giluwas mo sila ug gipagawas gikan sa Ehipto pinaagi sa imong gahom. 27 Ayaw tagda ang pagkagahig ulo, ang pagkadaotan, ug ang mga sala niini nga katawhan; hinumdomi hinuon ang imong mga alagad nga si Abraham, Isaac, ug Jacob. 28 Kon laglagon mo sila, moingon ang mga Ehiptohanon, “Gilaglag sila sa Ginoo kay dili siya makahimo sa pagdala kanila ngadto sa yuta nga iyang gisaad kanila.” O moingon sila, “Gilaglag sila sa Ginoo tungod kay napungot siya kanila; gipagawas niya sila sa Ehipto ug gidala sa kamingawan aron pamatyon.”
29 “ ‘Apan imo silang katawhan. Sila ang katawhan nga imong gipanag-iyahan, nga imong gipagawas gikan sa Ehipto pinaagi sa imong dakong gahom.’

9 “Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over the Jordan this day to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,
2 a people great and tall, the children of the Anakim, whom thou knowest and of whom thou hast heard say, ‘Who can stand before the children of Anak!’
3 Understand therefore this day that the Lord thy God is He who goeth over before thee as a consuming fire. He shall destroy them, and He shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee.
4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, ‘For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land’; but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee.
5 Not for thy righteousness or for the uprightness of thine heart dost thou go to possess their land, but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that He may perform the word which the Lord swore unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
6 “Understand, therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness, for thou art a stiffnecked people.
7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provoked the Lord thy God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the Lord.
8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord was so angry with you as to have destroyed you.
9 When I had gone up into the mount to receive the tablets of stone, even the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I abode on the mount forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water.
10 And the Lord delivered unto me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them was written according to all the words which the Lord spoke with you on the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
11 And it came to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, even the tablets of the covenant.
12 And the Lord said unto me, ‘Arise, get thee down quickly from hence, for thy people whom thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. They have quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten image.’
13 “Furthermore the Lord spoke unto me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiffnecked people.
14 Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.’
15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire; and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.
16 And I looked, and behold, ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made you a molten calf. Ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
17 And I took the two tablets, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.
18 And I fell down before the Lord forty days and forty nights as at the first; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sins which ye sinned in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord to provoke Him to anger.
19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure wherewith the Lord was wroth against you to destroy you. But the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also.
20 And the Lord was very angry with Aaron so as to have destroyed him, and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.
21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burned it with fire and stamped it and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust; and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.
22 “And at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibrothhattaavah ye provoked the Lord to wrath.
23 Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then ye rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and ye believed Him not nor hearkened to His voice.
24 Ye have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.
25 “Thus I fell down before the Lord forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first, because the Lord had said He would destroy you.
26 I prayed therefore unto the Lord, and said: ‘O Lord God, destroy not Thy people and Thine inheritance whom Thou hast redeemed through Thy greatness, whom Thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
27 Remember Thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness nor to their sin,
28 lest the land whence Thou broughtest us out say, “Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which He promised them, and because He hated them, He hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.”
29 Yet they are Thy people and Thine inheritance, whom Thou broughtest out by Thy mighty power and by Thy stretched out arm.’
