(A)The Lord did not [a]make you His beloved nor choose you because you were greater in number than any of the peoples, since you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the (B)oath which He swore to your forefathers, (C)the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of [b]slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

It is (A)not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to take possession of their land, [a]but it is because of the [b]wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out from before you, and in order to confirm (B)the [c]oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

“Know, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are (C)a [d]stubborn people.

God Will Restore Them

14 (A)Therefore behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As the Lord lives, who (B)brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ 15 but, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the (C)land of the north and from all the lands where He had banished them.’ For I will restore them to their own land which I gave to their fathers.

16 “Behold, I am going to send for many (D)fishermen,” declares the Lord, “and they will fish for them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they will (E)hunt them (F)from every mountain and every hill and from the clefts of the rocks. 17 (G)For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, (H)nor is their wrongdoing concealed from My eyes. 18 I will first repay them (I)double for their wrongdoing and their sin, because they have (J)defiled My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their (K)detestable idols and their abominations.”

19 Lord, my (L)strength and my stronghold,
And my (M)refuge in the day of distress,
To You the (N)nations will come
From the ends of the earth and say,
“Our fathers have inherited nothing but (O)falsehood,
Futility, and [a](P)things of no benefit.”
20 Can a person make gods for himself?
But they are (Q)not gods!

21 “Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—
This time I will (R)make them know
My [b]power and My might;
And they will (S)know that My name is the Lord.”

41 I will (A)rejoice over them to do them good and will [a]faithfully (B)plant them in this land with (C)all My heart and all My soul. 42 For this is what the Lord says: ‘(D)Just as I brought all this great disaster on this people, so I am going to (E)bring on them all the good that I am promising them.

Israel to Be Renewed for His Name’s Sake

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “It is (A)not for your sake, house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. 23 And I will (B)vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned among them. Then the (C)nations will know that I am the Lord,” declares the Lord God, “when I show Myself holy among you in their sight. 24 For I will (D)take you from the nations, and gather you from all the lands; and I will bring you into your own land. 25 Then I will (E)sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your (F)filthiness and from all your (G)idols. 26 Moreover, I will give you a (H)new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the (I)heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will (J)put My Spirit within you and bring it about that you walk in My statutes, and are careful and [a]follow My ordinances. 28 And you will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be (K)My people, and I will be your God. 29 Moreover, I will save you from all your uncleanness; and I will call for the grain and multiply it, and I (L)will not [b]bring a famine on you. 30 Instead, I will (M)multiply the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field, so that you will not receive again the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then you will (N)remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight for your wrongdoings and your abominations. 32 I am not doing this (O)for your sake,” declares the Lord God; “let that be known to you. Be ashamed and humiliated for your ways, house of Israel!”
