The Greatest Command
6 ‘This is the command – the statutes and ordinances – the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may follow them in the land you are about to enter and possess.(A) 2 Do this so that you may fear(B) the Lord your God(C) all the days of your life(D) by keeping all his statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life.(E) 3 Listen, Israel, and be careful to follow them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly, because the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey.(F)
4 ‘Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a](G) 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.(H) 6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart.(I) 7 Repeat them to your children.(J) Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol[b] on your forehead.[c](K) 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.
Remembering God through Obedience
10 ‘When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would give you – a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build, 11 houses full of every good thing that you did not fill them with, cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant(L) – and when you eat and are satisfied,(M) 12 be careful not to forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.(N) 13 Fear the Lord your God, worship him, and take your oaths in his name.(O) 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you, 15 for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God.(P) Otherwise, the Lord your God will become angry with you and obliterate you from the face of the earth. 16 Do not test(Q) the Lord your God as you tested him at Massah.(R) 17 Carefully observe the commands of the Lord your God, the decrees and statutes he has commanded you. 18 Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight, so that you may prosper and so that you may enter and possess the good land(S) the Lord your God swore to give your ancestors,(T) 19 by driving out all your enemies before you, as the Lord has said.(U)
20 ‘When your son asks you in the future, “What is the meaning(V) of the decrees, statutes, and ordinances that the Lord our God has commanded you? ” 21 tell him, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand.(W) 22 Before our eyes the Lord inflicted great and devastating signs and wonders on Egypt,(X) on Pharaoh, and on all his household, 23 but he brought us from there in order to lead us in and give us the land that he swore to our ancestors. 24 The Lord commanded us to follow all these statutes and to fear the Lord our God for our prosperity always and for our preservation, as it is today. 25 Righteousness will be ours if we are careful to follow every one of these commands before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.”

6 “Now this is (A)the commandment—the statutes and the rules[a]—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that (B)you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and (C)that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, (D)as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
4 “Hear, O Israel: (E)The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[b] 5 You (F)shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And (G)these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 (H)You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 (I)You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 (J)You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities (K)that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 (L)then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is (M)the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and (N)by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not (O)go after other gods, (P)the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for (Q)the Lord your God in your midst (R)is a jealous God—(S)lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.
16 (T)“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, (U)as you tested him at Massah. 17 You shall (V)diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18 (W)And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers 19 (X)by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.
20 (Y)“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, (Z)‘We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And (AA)the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. 23 And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. 24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, (AB)to fear the Lord our God, (AC)for our good always, that (AD)he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And (AE)it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’

6 Esta es la instrucción que Dios me mandó enseñarles. Me la dio en forma de normas y leyes. Obedézcanlas en el territorio que ustedes están a punto de ocupar. 2 De esa forma mostrarán ustedes respeto al SEÑOR su Dios. Si ustedes, sus hijos y sus nietos obedecen todos los días de su vida las leyes y mandamientos de Dios que les doy, tendrán una larga vida. 3 Escucha, Israel, y obedece fielmente estas leyes para que prosperes y te conviertas en una nación muy numerosa, como el SEÑOR, el Dios de tus antepasados, te prometió. La tierra que vas a ocupar rebosa de leche y de miel.
4 Escucha, ¡Israel! El SEÑOR es nuestro Dios, el SEÑOR es uno.[a]
5 Por eso ama al SEÑOR tú Dios con todo tu corazón[b], con todo tu ser y con todas tu fuerzas[c].
6 Recuerda siempre estos mandamientos que te doy hoy. 7 Enséñaselos a tus hijos y háblales sobre ellos cuando estés en tu casa, cuando camines, cuando te acuestes y cuando te levantes. 8 Escríbelos y átalos en tu brazo como un recordatorio y llévalos como cinta en tu frente. 9 Escríbelos en las puertas de tu casa y a la entrada de tus ciudades.
10 El SEÑOR tu Dios les prometió a tus antepasados Abraham, Isaac y Jacob que te iba a dar a ti esta tierra. Cuando te permita entrar a ella, te dará ciudades grandes y buenas, que tú no construiste; 11 casas llenas de cosas buenas que tú no compraste; pozos que tú no excavaste; viñedos y olivos que tú no plantaste. Cuando hayas comido y estés satisfecho, 12 sé cuidadoso de no olvidar al SEÑOR, que te sacó de la tierra de Egipto, donde eras esclavo. 13 Respeta al SEÑOR tu Dios, sírvele y haz tus promesas en su nombre. 14 No deberás seguir a otros dioses, a ninguno de los dioses de las naciones vecinas, 15 porque el SEÑOR tu Dios que está presente entre ustedes es un Dios celoso. Así que ten cuidado, para que el SEÑOR tu Dios no se enoje contigo y te destruya completamente.
16 No pongas a prueba al SEÑOR tu Dios, como hiciste en Masá. 17 Obedece los mandamientos del SEÑOR tu Dios, sus enseñanzas y leyes que te ha dado. 18 Haz lo que el SEÑOR considere bueno y justo para que así prosperes y puedas entrar y ocupar la tierra buena que el SEÑOR les prometió a tus antepasados. 19 De esa forma podrás expulsar del territorio a todos tus enemigos, tal como prometió el SEÑOR.
Enséñales a tus hijos lo que Dios hizo
20 En el futuro, cuando tu hijo te pregunte: «¿Cuál es el significado de las enseñanzas, normas y leyes que el SEÑOR nuestro Dios te dio?», 21 tú le responderás: «Nosotros éramos esclavos del faraón de Egipto, pero el SEÑOR nos sacó de Egipto gracias a su gran poder. 22 Ante nuestros ojos el SEÑOR hizo señales grandes y terribles, y milagros contra Egipto, contra el faraón y contra toda su gente. 23 Él nos sacó de ese lugar para traernos aquí y darnos esta tierra que él les había prometido a nuestros antepasados. 24 El SEÑOR nos mandó obedecer todas estas normas y leyes, y a respetarlo y obedecerlo a él. Esto será siempre para nuestro bien y nos mantendrá con vida como sucede hoy. 25 Si tenemos cuidado de obedecer todos sus mandamientos, tal como él nos ordenó el SEÑOR, Dios nos aprobará por haber hecho lo que es bueno».

6 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear(A) the Lord your God as long as you live(B) by keeping all his decrees and commands(C) that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.(D) 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey(E) so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly(F) in a land flowing with milk and honey,(G) just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised(H) you.
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a](I) 5 Love(J) the Lord your God with all your heart(K) and with all your soul and with all your strength.(L) 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.(M) 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.(N) 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.(O) 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.(P)
10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,(Q) 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig,(R) and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,(S) 12 be careful that you do not forget(T) the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
13 Fear the Lord(U) your God, serve him only(V) and take your oaths(W) in his name.(X) 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; 15 for the Lord your God(Y), who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16 Do not put the Lord your God to the test(Z) as you did at Massah. 17 Be sure to keep(AA) the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.(AB) 18 Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight,(AC) so that it may go well(AD) with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors, 19 thrusting out all your enemies(AE) before you, as the Lord said.
20 In the future, when your son asks you,(AF) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” 21 tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(AG) 22 Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. 23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. 24 The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,(AH) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.(AI) 25 And if we are careful to obey all this law(AJ) before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.(AK)”
