For the Lord’s portion(A) is his people,
    Jacob his allotted inheritance.(B)

10 In a desert(C) land he found him,
    in a barren and howling waste.(D)
He shielded(E) him and cared for him;
    he guarded him as the apple of his eye,(F)
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest
    and hovers over its young,(G)
that spreads its wings to catch them
    and carries them aloft.(H)
12 The Lord alone led(I) him;(J)
    no foreign god was with him.(K)

13 He made him ride on the heights(L) of the land
    and fed him with the fruit of the fields.
He nourished him with honey from the rock,(M)
    and with oil(N) from the flinty crag,
14 with curds and milk from herd and flock
    and with fattened lambs and goats,
with choice rams of Bashan(O)
    and the finest kernels of wheat.(P)
You drank the foaming blood of the grape.(Q)

17 This is what the Lord says—
    your Redeemer,(A) the Holy One(B) of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches(C) you what is best for you,
    who directs(D) you in the way(E) you should go.
18 If only you had paid attention(F) to my commands,
    your peace(G) would have been like a river,(H)
    your well-being(I) like the waves of the sea.
19 Your descendants(J) would have been like the sand,(K)
    your children like its numberless grains;(L)
their name would never be blotted out(M)
    nor destroyed from before me.”

20 Leave Babylon,
    flee(N) from the Babylonians!
Announce this with shouts of joy(O)
    and proclaim it.
Send it out to the ends of the earth;(P)
    say, “The Lord has redeemed(Q) his servant Jacob.”
21 They did not thirst(R) when he led them through the deserts;
    he made water flow(S) for them from the rock;
he split the rock
    and water gushed out.(T)
