Moses and Joshua Receive God’s Charge

14 The Lord said to Moses, “Your time to die is near; call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, so that I may commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting,(A) 15 and the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud; the pillar of cloud stood at the entrance to the tent.(B)

16 The Lord said to Moses, “Soon you will lie down with your ancestors. Then this people will begin to prostitute themselves to the foreign gods in their midst, the gods of the land into which they are going; they will forsake me, breaking my covenant that I have made with them.(C) 17 My anger will be kindled against them on that day. I will forsake them and hide my face from them; they will become easy prey, and many terrible troubles will come upon them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these troubles come upon us because our God is not in our midst?’(D) 18 On that day I will surely hide my face on account of all the evil they have done by turning to other gods. 19 Now, therefore, write this song, and teach it to the Israelites; put it in their mouths, in order that this song may be a witness for me against the Israelites. 20 For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I promised on oath to their ancestors, and they have eaten their fill and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, despising me and breaking my covenant.(E) 21 And when many terrible troubles come upon them, this song will confront them as a witness because it will not be lost from the mouths of their descendants. For I know what they are inclined to do even now, before I have brought them into the land that I promised them on oath.”(F) 22 That very day Moses wrote this song and taught it to the Israelites.(G)

23 Then the Lord[a] commissioned Joshua son of Nun and said, “Be strong and bold, for you shall bring the Israelites into the land that I promised them; I will be with you.”(H)

14 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Look, you are about to die;[a] call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of assembly,[b] so that I may instruct him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in[c] the tent of assembly.[d] 15 And Yahweh appeared in the tent in a column of cloud, and the column of the cloud stood at the entrance of the tent. 16 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Look, you are about to lie down with your ancestors,[e] and this people will arise and they[f] will play the prostitute after the foreign gods[g] of the land to which they are going.[h] 17 And my anger shall flare up against them[i] on that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they[j] shall become as prey, and disasters and troubles shall find[k] them,[l] and they[m] shall say on that day, ‘Is it not because our[n] God is not in our[o] midst that these disasters have found[p] us?’[q] 18 But I will certainly hide my face on that day, because of all of the evil that they[r] did because they[s] turned to other gods.

19 “And so then write this song for yourselves and teach it to the Israelites;[t] put it in their mouth, so that this song may be for me as a witness against the Israelites.[u] 20 For when I bring them[v] into the land that I swore to their[w] ancestors,[x] a land flowing with milk and honey, they will eat their fill,[y] and they[z] will become fat, and then they[aa] will turn to other gods, and they will serve them, and they will spurn me, and they[ab] will break my covenant. 21 And then[ac] many disasters and troubles will come upon them,[ad] and this song will give evidence before them[ae] as a witness, because it will not be forgotten from out of the mouth of their descendants,[af] for I know their[ag] inclination that they[ah] are having today[ai] before I have brought them[aj] into the land that I swore.” 22 And Moses wrote this song on that day and taught it to the Israelites.[ak]

23 Then he[al] told Joshua the son of Nun, and said to him, “Be strong and be courageous, for you shall bring the Israelites[am] into the land that I swore to them, and I will be with you.”
