Defeat of Og King of Bashan

3 Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan(A) with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei.(B) 2 The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid(C) of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.”

3 So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down,(D) leaving no survivors.(E) 4 At that time we took all his cities.(F) There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom(G) in Bashan.(H) 5 All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. 6 We completely destroyed[a] them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying[b](I) every city—men, women and children. 7 But all the livestock(J) and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.

8 So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites(K) the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon.(L) 9 (Hermon is called Sirion(M) by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.)(N) 10 We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah(O) and Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 (Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites.(P) His bed was decorated with iron and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide.[c] It is still in Rabbah(Q) of the Ammonites.)

Division of the Land

12 Of the land that we took over at that time, I gave the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory north of Aroer(R) by the Arnon Gorge, including half the hill country of Gilead, together with its towns. 13 The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh.(S) (The whole region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as a land of the Rephaites.(T) 14 Jair,(U) a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites;(V) it was named(W) after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.[d]) 15 And I gave Gilead to Makir.(X) 16 But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River,(Y) which is the border of the Ammonites. 17 Its western border was the Jordan in the Arabah,(Z) from Kinnereth(AA) to the Sea of the Arabah(AB) (that is, the Dead Sea(AC)), below the slopes of Pisgah.

18 I commanded you at that time: “The Lord your God has given(AD) you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of the other Israelites.(AE) 19 However, your wives,(AF) your children and your livestock(AG) (I know you have much livestock) may stay in the towns I have given you, 20 until the Lord gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you.”

Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan

21 At that time I commanded Joshua: “You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going. 22 Do not be afraid(AH) of them;(AI) the Lord your God himself will fight(AJ) for you.”

23 At that time I pleaded(AK) with the Lord: 24 “Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness(AL) and your strong hand. For what god(AM) is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works(AN) you do?(AO) 25 Let me go over and see the good land(AP) beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.(AQ)”

26 But because of you the Lord was angry(AR) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah(AS) and look west and north and south and east.(AT) Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross(AU) this Jordan.(AV) 28 But commission(AW) Joshua, and encourage(AX) and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across(AY) and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” 29 So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.(AZ)

The Defeat of King Og

3 “Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan. And (A)Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at (B)Edrei. 2 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand. And you shall do to him as you did to (C)Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’ 3 So the Lord our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people, (D)and we struck him down until he had no survivor left. 4 And we took all his cities at that time—there was not a city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, (E)the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages. 6 And (F)we devoted them to destruction,[a] as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction every (G)city, men, women, and children. 7 But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder. 8 So we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon 9 (the Sidonians call (H)Hermon (I)Sirion, while the Amorites call it (J)Senir), 10 all the cities of the (K)tableland and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as (L)Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For (M)only Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant of (N)the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in (O)Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits[b] was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to the (P)common cubit.[c])

12 “When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning (Q)at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with (R)its cities. 13 (S)The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is, (T)all the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land of (U)Rephaim. 14 (V)Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of (W)the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages (X)after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15 To Machir (Y)I gave Gilead, 16 and to the Reubenites (Z)and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok, (AA)the border of the Ammonites; 17 the Arabah also, with the Jordan as the border, from (AB)Chinnereth as far as (AC)the Sea of the Arabah, (AD)the Salt Sea, under (AE)the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

18 “And I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. (AF)All your men of valor shall cross over armed before your brothers, the people of Israel. 19 Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (AG)(I know that you have much livestock) shall remain in the cities that I have given you, 20 (AH)until the Lord gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also occupy the land that the Lord your God gives them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.’ 21 And I commanded (AI)Joshua at that time, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. So will the Lord do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing. 22 You shall not fear them, for it is (AJ)the Lord your God who fights for you.’

Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land

23 “And I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant (AK)your greatness and your mighty hand. For (AL)what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? 25 Please let me go over and see (AM)the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and (AN)Lebanon.’ 26 But (AO)the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me, (AP)‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again. 27 (AQ)Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and look at it with your eyes, for you shall not go over this Jordan. 28 But (AR)charge Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall go over at the head of this people, and he shall put them in possession of the land that you shall see.’ 29 So we remained in (AS)the valley opposite Beth-peor.

3 És kezünkbe adá az Úr, a mi Istenünk Ógot is, Básánnak királyát és minden õ népét, és úgy megvertük õt, hogy menekülni való sem maradt belõle.

4 És abban az idõben elfoglaltuk minden városát; nem volt város, a melyet el nem vettünk volna tõlök: hatvan várost, Argóbnak egész vidékét, a Básenbeli Ógnak országát.

5 Ezek a városok mind meg valának erõsítve magas kõfalakkal, kapukkal és zárokkal, kivévén igen sok kerítetlen várost.

6 És fegyverre hánytuk azokat, a mint cselekedtünk vala Szihonnal, Hesbon királyával, fegyverre hányván az egész várost: férfiakat, asszonyokat és a kisdedeket is.

7 De a barmokat és a városokból való ragadományokat mind magunk közt vetettük prédára.

8 És elvettük abban az idõben az Emoreusok két királyának kezébõl azt a földet, a mely a Jordánon túl vala, az Arnon pataktól fogva a Hermon hegyéig.

9 (A Sidoniak a Hermont Szirjonnak, az Emoreusok pedig Szenirnek hívják.)

10 A síkságnak minden városát, és az egész Gileádot, meg az egész Básánt Szalkáig és Edreig, a melyek a Básánbeli Óg országának városai voltak.

11 Mert egyedül Óg, Básánnak királya maradt meg az óriások maradéka közül. Ímé az õ ágya vas-ágy, nemde Rabbátban az Ammon fiainál van-é? Kilencz sing a hosszasága és négy sing a szélessége, férfi könyök szerint.

12 Ezt a földet pedig, a [melyet] abban az idõben örökségünkké tettünk, Aróertõl fogva, a mely az Arnon patak mellett van, és a Gileád hegyének felét, és annak városait odaadtam a Rúbenitáknak és Gáditáknak.

13 A Gileád többi részét pedig, és az egész Básánt, az Óg országát odaadtam a Manassé fél törzsének, Argóbnak egész vidékét. Ezt az egész Básánt óriások földének hívták.

14 Jair, Manassénak fia, kapta Argóbnak egész vidékét, a Gessuriták és Maakátiták határáig; és azokat a Básánnal együtt az õ nevérõl Jair faluinak hívják mind e mai napig.

15 Mákirnak pedig adtam Gileádot.

16 A Rúbenitáknak és a Gáditáknak pedig adtam Gileádtól fogva Arnonnak patakáig (a határ pedig a patak közepe) és a Jabbók patakáig, a [mely] az Ammon fiainak határa;

17 És a síkságot és határul a Jordánt, a Kinnerettõl a Síkság tengeréig, a Sóstengerig, a mely a Piszga-[hegy] lába alatt van napkelet felõl.

18 És parancsolék abban az idõben néktek, mondván: Az Úr, a ti Istenetek adta néktek ezt a földet, hogy bírjátok azt; felfegyverkezvén, menjetek át a ti atyátok fiai, Izráel fiai elõtt mind, a kik hadakozásra valók vagytok.

19 Csak feleségeitek, kicsinyeitek és barmaitok ([mert] tudom, hogy sok barmotok van) maradjanak a ti városaitokban, a melyeket én adtam néktek.

20 Mindaddig, a míg nyugodalmat ád az Úr a ti atyátokfiainak, mint néktek, és azok is bírhatják a földet, a melyet az Úr, a ti Istenetek ád nékik a Jordánon túl. Azután térjetek vissza, kiki az õ örökségébe, a melyet adtam néktek.

21 Józsuénak is parancsolék abban az idõben, mondván: Szemeiddel láttad mindazt, a mit cselekedett az Úr, a ti Istenetek ama két királylyal; így cselekszik az Úr minden országgal, a melyen átmégy.

22 Ne féljetek tõlök, mert az Úr, a ti Istenetek, maga hadakozik ti érettetek!

23 Könyörgék is az Úrnak abban az idõben, mondván:

24 Uram, Isten, te elkezdetted megmutatni a te szolgádnak a te nagyságodat és hatalmas kezedet! Mert kicsoda olyan Isten mennyben és földön, a ki cselekedhetnék a te cselekedeteid és hatalmad szerint?

25 Hadd menjek át kérlek, és hadd lássam meg azt a jó földet, a mely a Jordánon túl van, és azt a jó hegyet, és a Libanont!

26 De megharaguvék az Úr én reám ti miattatok, és nem hallgatott meg engem; hanem ezt mondá az Úr nékem: Elég ez néked, ne szólj többet már nékem e dolog felõl!

27 Menj fel a Piszga tetejére, és emeld fel a te szemeidet napnyugot felé és észak felé, dél felé és napkelet felé, és nézz szét a te szemeiddel, mert nem mégy át ezen a Jordánon.

28 Józsuénak pedig parancsolj, és bátorítsd õt, és erõsítsd õt, mert õ megy át e nép elõtt, és õ teszi õket örököseivé annak a földnek, a melyet meglátsz.

29 És ott maradánk a völgyben, Beth-Peórral szemben.

1-2 Därefter vände vi oss mot kung Og i Basan. Han mobiliserade genast sin armé och anföll oss vid Edrei. Men Herren uppmanade mig att inte vara rädd för honom: 'Allt hans folk och hela hans land tillhör er

3 Herren hjälpte oss att strida mot kung Og och hans folk, och vi dödade dem alla.

4 Sextio av hans städer intog vi, hela området Argob i Basan.

5 Städerna var mycket väl befästa, med höga murar och portar med bommar. Och naturligtvis intog vi också alla obefästa byar som saknade murar.

6 Vi utplånade Basans kungarike på samma sätt som vi hade gjort med kung Sihons kungarike i Hesbon och dödade allt folket; män, kvinnor och barn.

7 Men boskapen och bytet från städerna behöll vi.

8 Nu hade vi tagit de länder i besittning som tillhörde de båda amoreiska kungarna öster om floden Jordan, allt landområde från Arnondalen till berget Hermon.

9 (Sidonierna kallade berget Hermon för Sirion, medan amoreerna kallade det Senir.)

10 Vi intog alla städer på slätten, hela Gilead och hela Basan, ända bort till städerna Silka och Edrei i Ogs rike.

11 (Kung Og i Basan var för övrigt den siste av rafaeerna, jättarna. Hans kista av sten finns bevarad i Rabba, en av amoreernas städer, och den är fyra meter lång och två meter bred.)

Landet delas upp

12 De intagna landområdena gav jag till Rubens och Gads stammar och Manasses stam. Till Rubens och Gads stammar gav jag området som börjar vid Aroer vid floden Arnon, samt halva berget Gilead med dess städer.

13 Manasses stam fick resten av Gilead, hela kung Ogs förra kungarike och hela Argob. (Basan kallas ibland rafaeernas land.)

14 Jair i Manasses stam övertog hela Argob (Basan) till gränserna mot gesureerna och maakateerna. Han gav området namn efter sig själv och kallade det Jairs byar, som det fortfarande heter.

15 Sedan gav jag Gilead till släkten Makir.

16 Rubens och Gads stammar fick området som sträcker sig från floden Jabbok (gränsen till ammoniterna) i Gilead, till gränsen som går mitt i Arnons floddal.

17 De fick också hedlandet Araba, som begränsas av floden Jordan i väster, från Kinneret ända till berget Pisga och Salthavet, som också kallas Hedmarkshavet.

18 Jag påminde Rubens och Gads stammar och Manasses stam om att de inte fick slå sig ner för gott i sina områden. Deras män måste leda de andra stammarna över Jordan, till det land som Herren lovat dem.

19 Jag sa till dem: Era hustrur och barn kan bosätta sig här i städerna som Herren gett er, så att de kan ta hand om boskapen

20 tills ni kommer tillbaka från striden och den seger Herren kommer att ge er och de andra stammarna. När ni intagit landet som Herren, er Gud, har gett er på andra sidan floden Jordan, då kan ni vända tillbaka hit, till ert eget land.

Herren tillåter inte Mose att komma in i landet

21 Sedan sa jag till Josua: Du har sett vad Herren, din Gud, har gjort med de här båda kungarna. Nu ska du göra på samma sätt med alla kungariken på andra sidan Jordan.

22 Var inte rädd för folken där, för Herren, din Gud, ska strida för dig.

23-25 Vid detta tillfälle vände jag mig till Gud och bad: Herre, min Gud, låt mig få gå in i det utlovade landet, detta underbara land som ligger på andra sidan floden Jordan med sina vackra berg, och till Libanon. Jag har börjat förstå din storhet och makt. Vilken annan Gud i himlen eller på jorden har kunnat göra det du har gjort för oss?

26 Men Herren var arg på mig för er skull och ville inte låta mig gå över floden. 'Tala inte mer om det

27 'Gå i stället upp på berget Pisga och se dig omkring åt väster, norr, söder och öster. Därifrån kan du se landet på avstånd, men över Jordan ska du inte komma.

28 Insätt Josua i hans uppgift och uppmuntra honom, för han ska leda folket in i det land du ser från bergets topp.'

29 Då stannade vi kvar i dalen i närheten av Bet-Peor.
