3 Then we turned and went by the way of Basan: and Og the king of Basan came out to meet us with his people to fight in Edrai.
2 And the Lord said to me: Fear him not: because he is delivered into thy hand, with all his people and his land: and thou shalt do to him as thou hast done to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, that dwelt in Hesebon.
3 So the Lord our God delivered into our hands, Og also the king of Basan, and all his people: and we utterly destroyed them,
4 Wasting all his cities at one time, there was not a town that escaped us: sixty cities, all the country of Argob the kingdom of Og in Basan.
5 All the cities were fenced with very high walls, and with gates and bars, besides innumerable towns that had no walls.
6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we had done to Sehon the king of Hesebon, destroying every city, men and women and children:
7 But the cattle and the spoils of the cities we took for our prey.
8 And we took at that time the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorrhites, that were beyond the Jordan: from the torrent Amen unto the mount Hermon,
9 Which the Sidonians call Sarion, and the Amorrhites Sanir:
10 All the cities that are situate in the plain, and all the land of Galaad and Basan as far as Selcha and Edrai, cities of the kingdom of Og in Basan.
11 For only Og king of Basan remained of the race of the giants. His bed of iron is shewn, which is in Rabbath of the children of Ammon, being nine cubits long, and four broad after the measure of the cubit of a man's hand.
12 And we possessed the land at that time from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the torrent Amen, unto the half of mount Galaad: and I gave the cities thereof to Ruben and Gad.
13 And I delivered the other part of Galaad, and all Basan the kingdom of Og to the half tribe of Manasses, all the country of Argob: and all Basan is called the Land of giants.
14 Jair the son of Manasses possessed all the country of Argob unto the borders of Gessuri, and Machati. And he called Basan by his own name, Havoth Jair, that is to say, the towns of Jair, until this present day.
15 To Machir also I gave Galaad.
16 And to the tribes of Ruben and Gad I gave of the land of Galaad as far as the torrent Amen, half the torrent, and the confines even unto the torrent Jeboc, which is the border of the children of Ammon:
17 And the plain of the wilderness, and the Jordan, and the borders of Cenereth unto the sea of the desert, which is the most salt sea, to the foot of mount Phasga eastward.
18 And I commanded you at that time, saying: The Lord your God giveth you this land for an inheritance, go ye well appointed before your brethren the children of Israel, all the strong men of you,
19 Leaving your wives and children and cattle. For I know you have much cattle, and they must remain in the cities, which I have delivered to you.
20 Until the Lord give rest to your brethren, as he hath given to you: and they also possess the land, which he will give them beyond the Jordan: then shall every man return to his possession, which I have given you.
21 I commanded Josue also at that time, saying: Thy eyes have seen what the Lord your God hath done to these two kings: so will he do to all the kingdoms to which thou shalt pass.
22 Fear them not: for the Lord your God will fight for you.
23 And I besought the Lord at that time, saying:
24 Lord God, thou hast begun to shew unto thy servant thy greatness, and most mighty hand, for there is no other God either in heaven or earth, that is able to do thy works, or to be compared to thy strength.
25 I will pass over therefore, and will see this excellent land beyond the Jordan, and this goodly mountain, and Libanus.
26 And the Lord was angry with me on your account and heard me not, but said to me: It is enough: speak no more to me of this matter.
27 Go up to the top of Phasga, and cast thy eyes round about to the west, and to the north, and to the south, and to the east, and behold it, for thou shalt not pass this Jordan.
28 Command Josue, and encourage and strengthen him: for he shall go before this people, and shall divide unto them the land which thou shalt see.
29 And we abode in the valley over against the temple of Phogor.

3 «Poi ripiegammo e salimmo per la via di Bashan; e Og, re di Bashan, con tutta la sua gente, ci uscì contro per darci battaglia a Edrei.
2 Ma l'Eterno mi disse: "Non aver paura di lui, poiché io ti do nelle mani lui, tutta la sua gente e il suo paese; farai a lui quel che facesti a Sihon, re degli Amorei, che abitava a Heshbon".
3 Così l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, diede nelle nostre mani anche Og, re di Bashan, con tutta la sua gente; e noi lo sconfiggemmo senza lasciargli alcun superstite.
4 In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le sue città; non ci fu città che noi non prendessimo loro: sessanta città, tutta la regione di Argob, il regno di Og in Bashan.
5 Tutte queste città erano fortificate con alte mura, porte e sbarre, senza contare un gran numero di villaggi rurali.
6 Noi le votammo allo sterminio, come avevamo fatto di Sihon, re di Heshbon, distruggendo interamente tutte le città, uomini, donne e bambini.
7 Ma riserbammo come nostro bottino tutto il bestiame e le spoglie delle città.
8 In quel tempo dunque prendemmo dalle mani dei due re degli Amorei il paese che è al di là del Giordano, dal torrente Arnon al monte Hermon,
9 (Hermon è chiamato dai Sidoni Sirion, e dagli Amorei Senir),
10 tutte le città della pianura, tutto Galaad, tutto Bashan fino a Salkah e a Edrei, città del regno di Og in Bashan

17 e l'Arabah, con il Giordano per confine, da Kinnereth fino alla sponda orientale del mare dell'Arabah sotto le pendici del Pisgah.
18 In quel tempo io vi diedi quest'ordine, dicendo: "L'Eterno, il vostro DIO, vi ha dato questo paese perché lo possediate. Voi tutti, uomini di valore, passerete il Giordano armati, alla testa dei figli d'Israele, vostri fratelli.
19 Ma le vostre mogli, i vostri piccoli e il bestiame (so che avete molto bestiame) rimarranno nelle città che vi ho dato,
20 finché l'Eterno abbia dato riposo ai vostri fratelli, come ha fatto per voi e prendano anch'essi possesso del paese che l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, dà loro al di là del Giordano Poi ciascuno tornerà nell'eredità che vi ho dato".
21 In quel tempo, ordinai pure a Giosuè, dicendo: "I tuoi occhi hanno visto tutto ciò che l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, ha fatto a questi due re; lo stesso farà l'Eterno a tutti i regni che stai per attraversare.
22 Non abbiate paura di loro, perché l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, combatterà egli stesso per voi".
23 In quel medesimo tempo, io supplicai l'Eterno, dicendo:
24 "O Signore, o Eterno, tu hai cominciato a mostrare al tuo servo la tua grandezza e la tua mano potente; poiché qual è il dio in cielo o sulla terra, che possa fare le opere e i portenti simili a quelli che fai tu?
25 Deh, lasciami passare il Giordano per vedere il bel paese che è al di là del Giordano, la bella regione montuosa e il Libano".
26 Ma l'Eterno si adirò contro di me per causa vostra, e non mi esaudì. Così l'Eterno mi disse: "Basta così; non parlarmi piú di questa cosa.
27 Sali sulla vetta de Pisgah, volgi lo sguardo a ovest, a nord, a sud e a est e contempla coi tuoi occhi, perché tu non passerai questo Giordano.
28 Ma da' ordini a Giosuè, fortificalo e incoraggialo, perché lui passerà il Giordano alla testa di questo popolo e metterà Israele in possesso del paese che vedrai".
29 Così ci fermammo nella valle di fronte a Beth-Peor».

Defeat of Og King of Bashan
3 Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan(A) with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei.(B) 2 The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid(C) of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.”
3 So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down,(D) leaving no survivors.(E) 4 At that time we took all his cities.(F) There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom(G) in Bashan.(H) 5 All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. 6 We completely destroyed[a] them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying[b](I) every city—men, women and children. 7 But all the livestock(J) and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.
8 So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites(K) the territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Hermon.(L) 9 (Hermon is called Sirion(M) by the Sidonians; the Amorites call it Senir.)(N) 10 We took all the towns on the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salekah(O) and Edrei, towns of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 (Og king of Bashan was the last of the Rephaites.(P) His bed was decorated with iron and was more than nine cubits long and four cubits wide.[c] It is still in Rabbah(Q) of the Ammonites.)
Division of the Land
12 Of the land that we took over at that time, I gave the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory north of Aroer(R) by the Arnon Gorge, including half the hill country of Gilead, together with its towns. 13 The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh.(S) (The whole region of Argob in Bashan used to be known as a land of the Rephaites.(T) 14 Jair,(U) a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites;(V) it was named(W) after him, so that to this day Bashan is called Havvoth Jair.[d]) 15 And I gave Gilead to Makir.(X) 16 But to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory extending from Gilead down to the Arnon Gorge (the middle of the gorge being the border) and out to the Jabbok River,(Y) which is the border of the Ammonites. 17 Its western border was the Jordan in the Arabah,(Z) from Kinnereth(AA) to the Sea of the Arabah(AB) (that is, the Dead Sea(AC)), below the slopes of Pisgah.
18 I commanded you at that time: “The Lord your God has given(AD) you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of the other Israelites.(AE) 19 However, your wives,(AF) your children and your livestock(AG) (I know you have much livestock) may stay in the towns I have given you, 20 until the Lord gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you.”
Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan
21 At that time I commanded Joshua: “You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going. 22 Do not be afraid(AH) of them;(AI) the Lord your God himself will fight(AJ) for you.”
23 At that time I pleaded(AK) with the Lord: 24 “Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness(AL) and your strong hand. For what god(AM) is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works(AN) you do?(AO) 25 Let me go over and see the good land(AP) beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.(AQ)”
26 But because of you the Lord was angry(AR) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah(AS) and look west and north and south and east.(AT) Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross(AU) this Jordan.(AV) 28 But commission(AW) Joshua, and encourage(AX) and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across(AY) and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” 29 So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.(AZ)
