¹⁸ I commanded you at that time: “The Lord your God has given^(A) you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of the other Israelites.^{(B) 19} However, your wives,^(C) your children and your livestock^(D) (I know you have much livestock) may stay in the towns I have given you, ²⁰ until the Lord gives rest to your fellow Israelites as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you.”

²² If you carefully observe^(A) all these commands I am giving you to follow—to love^(B) the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast^(C) to him— ²³ then the Lord will drive out^(D) all these nations^(E) before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and stronger than you.^{(F) 24} Every place where you set your foot will be yours:^(G) Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River^(H) to the Mediterranean Sea. ²⁵ No one will be able to stand against you. The Lord your God, as he promised you, will put the terror^(I) and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.^(J)

23 After a long time had passed and the Lord had given Israel rest^(A) from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man,^(B)

7 After the king was settled in his palace^(B) and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies^(C) around him,^(D)

¹⁷ At the king’s command they removed from the quarry^(A) large blocks of high-grade stone^(B) to provide a foundation of dressed stone for the temple. ¹⁸ The craftsmen of Solomon and Hiram^(C) and workers from Byblos^(D) cut and prepared the timber and stone for the building of the temple.
