Chapter 29
Past Favors Recalled. 1 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and to all his land, 2 the great testings your own eyes have seen, and those great signs and wonders.(A) 3 But the Lord has not given you a heart to understand, or eyes to see, or ears to hear until this day.(B) 4 (C)I led you for forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes did not fall from you in tatters nor your sandals from your feet; 5 it was not bread that you ate, nor wine or beer that you drank—so that you might know that I, the Lord, am your God. 6 (D)When you came to this place, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, came out to engage us in battle, but we defeated them 7 and took their land, and gave it as a heritage to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.(E) 8 Observe carefully the words of this covenant, therefore, in order that you may succeed in whatever you do.(F)
All Israel Bound by Covenant. 9 You are standing today, all of you, in the presence of the Lord, your God—your tribal heads, elders, and officials, all of the men of Israel, 10 your children, your wives, and the resident alien who lives in your camp, from those who cut wood to those who draw water for you— 11 to enter into the covenant of the Lord, your God, which the Lord, your God, is making with you today, with its curse, 12 so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God, as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 13 (G)But it is not with you alone that I am making this covenant, with its curse, 14 but with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord, our God, and with those who are not here with us[a] today.
Warning Against Idolatry. 15 You know that we lived in the land of Egypt and that we passed through the nations, that you too passed through 16 and saw the loathsome things and idols of wood and stone, of gold and silver, that they possess. 17 There may be among you a man or woman, or a clan or tribe, whose heart is now turning away from the Lord, our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; there may be among you a root bearing poison and wormwood; 18 if any such persons, after hearing the words of this curse, should congratulate themselves, saying in their hearts, “I am safe, even though I walk in stubbornness of heart,” thereby sweeping away moist and dry alike,[b](H) 19 the Lord will never consent to pardon them. Instead, the Lord’s burning wrath will flare up against them; every curse written in this book will pounce on them, and the Lord will blot out their names from under the heavens.(I) 20 The Lord will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for doom, in keeping with all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.
Punishment for Idolatry. 21 (J)Future generations, your descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigners who will come here from distant lands, when they see the calamities of this land and the ills the Lord has inflicted upon it— 22 all its soil burned out by sulphur and salt, unsown and unfruitful, without a blade of grass, like the catastrophe of Sodom and Gomorrah,(K) Admah and Zeboiim,[c] which the Lord overthrew in his furious wrath— 23 (L)they and all the nations will ask, “Why has the Lord dealt thus with this land? Why this great outburst of wrath?” 24 And they will say, “Because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, 25 and they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods whom they did not know and whom he had not apportioned to them.(M) 26 (N)So the anger of the Lord flared up against this land and brought on it every curse written in this book. 27 The Lord uprooted them from their soil in anger, fury, and great wrath, and cast them out into another land, as they are today.” 28 The hidden things[d] belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things are for us and for our children forever, to observe all the words of this law.

- 29:18 Sweeping away moist and dry alike: possibly a proverbial expression: because of Israel’s infidelity the Lord will punish the just with the wicked (cf. Gn 18:25), rooting out good plants in irrigated soil, together with worthless plants growing in dry ground.
- 29:22 Admah and Zeboiim: neighboring cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Jordan Plain and identified in the tradition as destroyed with them. Cf. Hos 11:8; Jer 50:40.
- 29:28 The hidden things: probably the events of the future. The revealed things: the covenant and its provisions, including the sanctions of blessing and curse. This aphorism may mean: leave “hidden things” to God; what matters is to keep the law.

2 Mose anayitanitsa Aisraeli onse nati kwa iwo:
Inu munaona zonse zimene Yehova anachita kwa Farao, nduna zake ndi dziko lake lonse ku Igupto. 3 Ndi maso anu munaona mayesero onse aja, zizindikiro zozizwitsa ndi zodabwitsa zazikulu zija. 4 Koma mpaka lero Yehova sanakupatseni mtima wozindikira kapena maso openya kapena makutu akumva. 5 Mʼzaka makumi anayi zimene ndinakutsogolerani mʼchipululu, zovala zanu ndiponso nsapato za ku mapazi anu sizinangʼambike. 6 Inu simunadye buledi ndi kumwa vinyo kapena chakumwa chilichonse choledzeretsa. Ndinachita izi kuti mudziwe kuti Ine ndine Yehova Mulungu wanu.
7 Pamene munafika malo ano, Sihoni mfumu ya ku Hesiboni ndi Ogi mfumu ya ku Basani anabwera kudzamenyana nafe koma tinawagonjetsa iwo. 8 Tinatenga dziko lawo ndi kulipereka ngati cholowa cha fuko la Rubeni, fuko la Gadi ndi theka la fuko la Manase.
9 Tsatirani mosamalitsa mawu a mʼpangano ili kuti zinthu zizikuyenderani bwino pa zochitika zanu zonse. 10 Lero lino nonse mukuyima pamaso pa Yehova Mulungu wanu, atsogoleri a mafuko anu, akuluakulu ndi nduna zanu, ndi amuna ena onse a mu Israeli, 11 pamodzi ndi ana ndi akazi anu, kudzanso alendo amene akukhala pakati panu omwe amakuwazirani nkhuni ndi kukutungirani madzi. 12 Mukuyimirira pano kuti mulowe mʼpangano ndi Yehova Mulungu wanu, pangano limene Yehova akuchita ndi inu lero ndi kulisindikiza ndi malumbiro, 13 kukukhazikitsani lero lino ngati anthu ake, ndi kuti Iye akhale Mulungu wanu monga anakulonjezani inu ndiponso monga analumbira kwa makolo anu Abrahamu, Isake ndi Yakobo. 14 Ndikupanga pangano ili ndi malumbiro ake osati kwa inu nokha, 15 amene muli pano pamaso pa Yehova Mulungu wathu, koma ndi iwonso amene sali pano lero.
16 Inu nomwe mukudziwa mmene tinkakhalira ku Igupto ndi mmene tinadutsira mayiko pa ulendo wobwera kuno. 17 Ife tinaona pakati pawo mafanizo ndi mafano awo onyansa, amtengo ndi amiyala, asiliva ndi agolide. 18 Onetsetsani kuti pasapezeke mwamuna kapena mkazi, banja kapena fuko pakati panu lero amene mtima wawo udzapandukira Yehova Mulungu wanu ndi kupita kukapembedza milungu ya mitundu iyo. Onetsetsani kuti pasapezeke muzu pakati panu wotulutsa mankhwala akupha otere.
19 Munthu wotere akamva mawu a lumbiro ili, asadzidalitse yekha mʼmaganizo mwake namati, “Ine ndidzapulumuka ngakhale nditapitiriza kuyenda njira yanga.” Zoterezi zidzadzetsa masautso pa nthaka ya chinyontho ndi yowuma yomwe. 20 Yehova sadzamukhululukira. Mkwiyo ndi nsanje ya Yehova zidzamuyakira munthuyo. Matemberero onse wolembedwa mʼbukuli adzamugwera iye ndipo Yehova adzafafaniza dzina lake pa dziko lapansi. 21 Yehova adzasankha pakati pa Aisraeli anthu oyenera masautso monga mwa matemberero onse a mʼpangano olembedwa Mʼbuku la Malamulo.
22 Ana anu a mibado yakutsogolo ndi alendo amene adzachokera kutali adzaona matsoka amene adzakugwerani mʼdziko muno ndiponso matenda amene Yehova adzabweretsa pa dzikoli. 23 Dziko lonse lidzasanduka nthaka ya mchere ndi ya sulufule. Simudzadzalamo kanthu, simudzakhala chomera chilichonse, ndi mbewu yomera mʼmenemo. Dziko lanu lidzakhala lowonongeka ngati Sodomu ndi Gomora, Adima ndi Zeboimu, mizinda imene Yehova anayiwononga ndi mkwiyo wake waukulu. 24 Mitundu yonse ya anthu idzafunsa kuti, “Kodi chifukwa chiyani Yehova anachita zotere mʼdziko lake? Kodi chifukwa chiyani anaonetsa mkwiyo woopsa wotere?”
25 Ndipo yankho la mafunso amenewa lidzakhala lakuti, “Chifukwa chakuti anthu awa aphwanya pangano la Yehova Mulungu wa makolo awo, pangano limene Iye anapangana nawo pamene anawatulutsa ku Igupto. 26 Iwo anachoka ndi kukatumikira milungu ina ndi kuyipembedza, milungu imene sanayidziwe, milungu imene sanawapatse. 27 Choncho Yehova anakwiyira dziko lino, kotero anabweretsa matemberero onse amene analembedwa mʼbuku lino. 28 Ndi mkwiyo komanso ukali wake woopsa Yehova anawazula mʼdziko lawo ndi kuwaponyera mʼdziko lina, monga mmene zilili lero lino.”
29 Zinsinsi ndi za Yehova Mulungu wathu koma zinthu zimene zaululidwa ndi zathu ndi ana athu kwamuyaya, kuti titsatire mawu onse a mʼmalamulowa.

The Covenant Renewed in Moab
29 These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the (A)covenant which He made with them in Horeb.
2 Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: (B)“You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land— 3 (C)the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders. 4 Yet (D)the Lord has not given you a heart to [a]perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day. 5 (E)And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. (F)Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet. 6 (G)You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the Lord your God. 7 And when you came to this place, (H)Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we conquered them. 8 We took their land and (I)gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh. 9 Therefore (J)keep the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may (K)prosper in all that you do.
10 “All of you stand today before the Lord your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones and your wives—also the stranger who is in your camp, from (L)the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water— 12 that you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and (M)into His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you today, 13 that He may (N)establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you, (O)just as He has spoken to you, and (P)just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
14 “I make this covenant and this oath, (Q)not with you alone, 15 but with him who stands here with us today before the Lord our God, (R)as well as with him who is not here with us today 16 (for you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we came through the nations which you passed by, 17 and you saw their [b]abominations and their idols which were among them—wood and stone and silver and gold); 18 so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, (S)whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, (T)and that there may not be among you a root bearing (U)bitterness or wormwood; 19 and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, even though I [c]follow the (V)dictates of my heart’—(W)as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.
20 (X)“The Lord would not spare him; for then (Y)the anger of the Lord and (Z)His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the Lord (AA)would blot out his name from under heaven. 21 And the Lord (AB)would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the (AC)Law, 22 so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they (AD)see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the Lord has laid on it:
23 ‘The whole land is brimstone, (AE)salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, (AF)like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and His wrath.’ 24 All nations would say, (AG)‘Why has the Lord done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?’ 25 Then people would say: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt; 26 for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them. 27 Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against this land, (AH)to bring on it every curse that is written in this book. 28 And the Lord (AI)uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’
29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

16 “You know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed. 17 And you have seen their detestable things, their idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold, which were among them. 18 Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you (S)a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit, 19 one who, when he hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.’ This will lead to the sweeping away of moist and dry alike. 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him, but rather (T)the anger of the Lord and (U)his jealousy will smoke against that man, and the curses written in this book will settle upon him, and the Lord (V)will blot out his name from under heaven. 21 And the Lord will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for calamity, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law. 22 And the next generation, your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, (W)will say, when they see the afflictions of that land and the sicknesses with which the Lord has made it sick— 23 the whole land burned out with brimstone and (X)salt, nothing sown and nothing growing, where no plant can sprout, (Y)an overthrow like that of Sodom and Gomorrah, (Z)Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in his anger and wrath— 24 all the nations (AA)will say, (AB)‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land? What caused the heat of this great anger?’ 25 Then people will say, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, 26 and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not known and whom he had not allotted to them. 27 Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against this land, (AC)bringing upon it all the curses written in this book, 28 and the Lord (AD)uprooted them from their land in anger and fury and great wrath, and (AE)cast them into another land, as they are this day.’
29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
