Wetten over de oogst
26 Straks komen jullie in het land dat de Heer God jullie gaat geven. Jullie gaan het veroveren en er wonen. 2 Het eerste jaar dat jullie daar wonen, moeten jullie het eerste deel van alles wat jullie oogsten in een mand doen. Ga daarmee naar de plaats die jullie Heer God zal uitkiezen om te wonen. 3 Breng het naar de priester en zeg tegen hem: 'Ik verklaar vandaag voor uw Heer God, dat ik in het land ben gekomen dat de Heer aan onze voorvaders Abraham, Izaäk en Jakob heeft beloofd.' 4 De priester zal de mand van je aanpakken en bij het altaar van jullie Heer God zetten. 5 Zeg daarna tegen de Heer: 'Mijn voorvader was een Arameeër die op de rand van de dood was.[a] Hij trok met een klein aantal mensen naar Egypte. Daar bleef hij als vreemdeling wonen. Hij werd daar tot een groot en machtig volk. 6 Maar de Egyptenaren mishandelden ons en onderdrukten ons. Ze lieten ons zwaar slavenwerk doen. 7 Toen riepen we tot U, de Heer God van onze voorvaders Abraham, Izaäk en Jakob. U luisterde naar ons en zag onze ellende. 8 Toen bevrijdde U ons op een machtige manier uit Egypte, met grote rampen en grote wonderen. 9 U bracht ons naar deze plaats en gaf ons dit prachtige, vruchtbare land. 10 Nu breng ik U het eerste deel van de oogst van het land dat U, Heer, aan mij heeft gegeven.' Zet de mand neer bij je Heer God en buig je voor Hem neer. 11 Maak daarna een feestmaaltijd klaar, omdat Hij zo goed voor jou en je familie geweest is. Vier feest en nodig ook de Levieten en de vreemdelingen uit die bij jullie wonen.
12 Houd in het derde jaar een tiende deel van alles wat je oogst apart voor de Heer. Geef het aan de Levieten, de vreemdelingen, de weeskinderen en de weduwen die bij je in de stad wonen. Ze mogen daarvan eten zoveel als ze willen. 13 Zeg tegen de Heer: 'Ik heb het deel dat ik voor U apart had gezet, uit mijn huis weggedaan. Ik heb het aan de Levieten, de vreemdelingen, de weeskinderen en de weduwen gegeven, zoals U mij heeft bevolen. Ik heb mij aan al uw wetten gehouden. Ik ben niets vergeten. 14 Ik heb er niets van gebruikt voor een begrafenismaaltijd. Ik ben er niet aangekomen toen ik onrein was. Ik heb er niets van aan een dode in zijn graf meegegeven. Ik heb U gehoorzaamd en alles gedaan wat U ons heeft bevolen. 15 Heer, zorg alstublieft voor ons vanuit uw heilige huis in de hemel. Wees alstublieft goed voor uw volk Israël en het land dat U ons heeft gegeven, zoals U aan onze voorvaders Abraham, Izaäk en Jakob heeft gezworen. Wees alstublieft goed voor dit prachtige en vruchtbare land.'
De belofte aan de Heer
16 Vandaag beveelt de Heer God jullie dat jullie je aan al deze wetten en leefregels moeten houden. Houd je eraan met je hele hart en je hele ziel. 17 Jullie hebben vandaag beloofd dat de Heer jullie God zal zijn, dat jullie zullen leven zoals Hij het wil, dat jullie je aan zijn wetten en leefregels zullen houden en dat jullie Hem in alles wat Hij zegt gehoorzaam zullen zijn. 18 En de Heer heeft jullie vandaag beloofd dat jullie zijn eigen volk zullen zijn, zoals Hij jullie heeft beloofd. Hij wil nu dat jullie je aan al zijn wetten en leefregels zullen houden. 19 Dan zal Hij ervoor zorgen dat alle volken jullie zullen prijzen en dat het met jullie beter gaat dan met alle andere volken op aarde. Jullie zullen zijn volk zijn, het volk van de Heer God, zoals Hij heeft beloofd."

26 “And it shall be, when you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it, 2 (A)that you shall take some of the first of all the produce of the ground, which you shall bring from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and put it in a basket and (B)go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide. 3 And you shall go to the one who is priest in those days, and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord [a]your God that I have come to the country which the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’
4 “Then the priest shall take the basket out of your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God. 5 And you shall answer and say before the Lord your God: ‘My father was (C)a [b]Syrian, (D)about to perish, and (E)he went down to Egypt and [c]dwelt there, (F)few in number; and there he became a nation, (G)great, mighty, and populous. 6 But the (H)Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us. 7 (I)Then we cried out to the Lord God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our oppression. 8 So (J)the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, (K)with great terror and with signs and wonders. 9 He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, (L)“a land flowing with milk and honey”; 10 and now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land which you, O Lord, have given me.’
“Then you shall set it before the Lord your God, and worship before the Lord your God. 11 So (M)you shall rejoice in every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you.
12 “When you have finished laying aside all the (N)tithe of your increase in the third year—(O)the year of tithing—and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your gates and be filled, 13 then you shall say before the Lord your God: ‘I have removed the [d]holy tithe from my house, and also have given them to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all Your commandments which You have commanded me; I have not transgressed Your commandments, (P)nor have I forgotten them. 14 (Q)I have not eaten any of it [e]when in mourning, nor have I removed any of it [f]for an unclean use, nor given any of it for the dead. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord my God, and have done according to all that You have commanded me. 15 (R)Look down from Your holy [g]habitation, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel and the land which You have given us, just as You swore to our fathers, (S)“a land flowing with milk and honey.” ’
A Special People of God
16 “This day the Lord your God commands you to observe these statutes and judgments; therefore you shall be careful to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 Today you have (T)proclaimed the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and that you will (U)obey His voice. 18 Also today (V)the Lord has proclaimed you to be His special people, just as He promised you, that you should keep all His commandments, 19 and that He will set you (W)high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be (X)a [h]holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.”
