⁵ Then you will respond and say in the presence of the Lord your God, “My father was a wandering^[a] Aramean. He went down to Egypt and lived there as an alien with just a few people, but there he became a great, strong, and populous nation. ⁶ The Egyptians mistreated and afflicted us. They imposed hard labor on us. ⁷ We cried out to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice, and he saw our affliction, our labor, and oppression. ⁸ The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with great awe-inspiring acts and signs and wonders. ⁹ He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. ¹⁰ So now, look as I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you have given me, Lord.”

Then set the basket down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God.

The Devil Tempts Jesus

4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, ² where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. He did not eat anything during those days. When they came to an end, he was hungry. ³ The Devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

⁴ Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”^[a]

⁵ The Devil led him up to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. ⁶ The Devil told him, “I will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms, because it has been entrusted to me, and I can give it to anyone I want. ⁷ So, if you worship me, it will all be yours.”

⁸ Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”^[b]

⁹ The Devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰ because it is written:

¹¹ And,

¹² Jesus answered him, “It says: ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’”^[d]

¹³ When the Devil had finished every temptation, he left him until an opportune time.

Jesus Is Our High Priest

¹⁴ Therefore, since we have a great high priest, who has gone through the heavens, namely, Jesus the Son of God, let us continue to hold on to our confession. ¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet was without sin. ¹⁶ So let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
