Deuteronomy 25

25 If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.
2 And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
3 Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn.
5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.
6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
7 And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother.
8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her;
9 Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house.
10 And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.
11 When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:
12 Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her.
13 Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small.
14 Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small.
15 But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
16 For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the Lord thy God.
17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;
18 How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.
19 Therefore it shall be, when the Lord thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.

25 “If there is a (A)dispute between men and they come into court and the judges decide between them, (B)acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty, 2 then if the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall cause him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with a number of stripes in proportion to his offense. 3 (C)Forty stripes may be given him, but not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight.
4 (D)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.
Laws Concerning Levirate Marriage
5 (E)“If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her (F)husband's brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. 6 And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that (G)his name may not be blotted out of Israel. 7 And if the man does not wish to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall (H)go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband's brother refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.’ 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, (I)‘I do not wish to take her,’ 9 then his brother's wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and (J)pull his sandal off his foot and (K)spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not (L)build up his brother's house.’ 10 And the name of his house[a] shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal pulled off.’

13 “You (N)shall not have in your bag two kinds of weights, a large and a small. 14 You shall not have in your house two kinds of measures, a large and a small. 15 A full and fair[b] weight you shall have, a full and fair measure you shall have, (O)that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For (P)all who do such things, all who act dishonestly, (Q)are an abomination to the Lord your God.
17 (R)“Remember what Amalek did to you (S)on the way as you came out of Egypt, 18 how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and (T)cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God. 19 Therefore (U)when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall (V)blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.

25 Când doi oameni vor avea o ceartă(A) între ei şi se vor înfăţişa înaintea judecăţii ca să fie judecaţi, celui nevinovat(B) să-i dea drumul, iar pe cel vinovat să-l osândească. 2 Dacă cel vinovat este osândit să fie bătut(C), judecătorul să pună să-l întindă la pământ şi să-i dea(D) în faţa lui un număr de lovituri potrivit cu greutatea vinei lui. 3 Să nu pună să-i dea mai mult de patruzeci(E) de lovituri, ca nu cumva, dându-i mai multe lovituri decât atât, fratele tău să fie înjosit(F) înaintea ta. 4 Să(G) nu legi gura boului când treieră grâul.
Căsătoria între cumnat şi cumnată
5 Când fraţii vor locui împreună şi unul din ei va muri fără să lase copii, nevasta mortului să nu se mărite afară cu un străin, ci cumnatul ei să se ducă la ea, s-o ia de nevastă şi să se însoare cu ea ca cumnat. 6 Întâiul născut, pe care-l va naşte, să moştenească(H) pe fratele cel mort şi să-i poarte numele, pentru ca numele acesta să nu(I) fie şters din Israel. 7 Dacă omul acesta nu vrea să ia pe cumnată-sa, ea să se suie la poarta(J) cetăţii, la bătrâni, şi să spună: ‘Cumnatul meu nu vrea să ridice în Israel numele fratelui său, nu vrea să mă ia de nevastă după dreptul de cumnat.’ 8 Bătrânii cetăţii să-l cheme şi să-i vorbească. Dacă el stăruie şi zice: ‘Nu vreau(K) s-o iau’, 9 atunci cumnată-sa să se apropie de el în faţa bătrânilor, să-i(L) scoată încălţămintea din picior şi să-l scuipe în faţă. Şi luând cuvântul, să zică: ‘Aşa să se facă omului care nu voieşte să ridice(M) casa fratelui său.’ 10 Şi casa lui se va numi în Israel ‘Casa celui descălţat’. 11 Când doi oameni se vor certa unul cu altul, şi nevasta unuia se va apropia să scoată pe bărbatul său din mâna celui ce-l loveşte, dacă întinde mâna şi apucă pe acesta din urmă de părţile ruşinoase, 12 să-i tai mâna; să n-ai nicio milă(N) de ea.
Cântăreala dreaptă
13 Să n-ai(O) în sacul tău două feluri de greutăţi, una mare şi alta mică. 14 Să n-ai în casă două feluri de efă, una mare şi alta mică. 15 Ci să ai o greutate adevărată şi dreaptă, să ai o efă adevărată şi dreaptă, pentru ca să ai zile(P) multe în ţara pe care ţi-o dă Domnul, Dumnezeul tău. 16 Căci oricine face aceste lucruri, oricine săvârşeşte o nedreptate, este o urâciune(Q) înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeului tău.
Nimicirea amaleciţilor
17 Adu-ţi(R) aminte ce ţi-a făcut Amalec pe drum, la ieşirea voastră din Egipt: 18 cum te-a întâlnit pe drum şi, fără nicio teamă(S) de Dumnezeu, s-a aruncat asupra ta pe dinapoi, asupra tuturor celor ce se târau la coadă, când erai obosit şi sleit de puteri. 19 Când îţi va(T) da Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, odihnă, după ce te va izbăvi de toţi vrăjmaşii care te înconjoară, în ţara pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, ţi-o dă ca moştenire şi spre stăpânire, să ştergi(U) pomenirea lui Amalec de sub ceruri – să nu uiţi lucrul acesta.

25 If two people have an argument and go to court, the judges will decide the case. They will ·declare one person right [acquit the innocent] and ·the other [convict the] guilty. 2 If the guilty person has to be ·punished with a beating [struck; flogged], the judge will make that person lie down and be ·beaten [struck; flogged] in front of him. The number of lashes should match the crime. 3 But don’t ·hit [strike] a person more than forty times, because more than that would disgrace ·him [your relative/neighbor] before others [2 Cor. 11:24].
4 When an ox is ·working in the grain [treading the grain], do not ·cover its mouth to keep it from eating [muzzle it; 1 Cor. 9:9].
5 If two brothers are living together, and one of them dies without having a son, his widow must not marry ·someone [a stranger] outside her husband’s family. Her husband’s brother must marry her, which is his duty to her as a brother-in-law. 6 The first son she has ·counts as the son of the dead [will raise up the name of his] brother so that his name will not be ·forgotten [blotted/wiped out] in Israel [Gen. 38; Ruth 4].
7 But if a man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, she should go to the elders at the town gate. She should say, “My brother-in-law will not ·carry on [raise up] his brother’s name in Israel. He refuses to do his duty for me.”
8 Then the elders of the town must call for the man and talk to him. But if he ·is stubborn [L stands] and says, “I don’t want to marry her,” 9 the woman must go up to him in ·front of the leaders [the presence of the elders]. She must take off one of his sandals and spit in his face and say, “This is for the man who won’t ·continue [L build] his brother’s ·family [L house]!” 10 Then that man’s ·family [L house] shall be known in Israel as the ·Family [L House] of the Unsandaled.
11 If two men are fighting and one man’s wife comes to ·save [protect] her husband from his attacker, grabbing the attacker by his ·sex organs [genitals], 12 you must cut off her hand. ·Show her no mercy [L Do not let your eyes show compassion on her].
13 Don’t carry two ·sets of weights [L stones] ·with you [L in your bag/pouch], one heavy and one light. 14 Don’t have two different sets of measures in your house, one large and one small. 15 You must have ·true [whole; full] and ·honest [accurate] weights and measures so that you will live a long time in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 16 The Lord your God ·hates [detests] anyone who ·is dishonest and uses dishonest measures [L does such things—who acts crookedly/does bad things; Lev. 19:35–37; Prov. 11:1; Ezek. 45:10–12; Amos 8:5; Mic. 6:10–12].
17 Remember what the Amalekites did to you when you came out of Egypt [Ex. 17:8–16]. 18 When you were tired and worn out, they met you on the road and ·attacked [picked off] all ·those lagging behind [the stragglers]. They were not afraid of God. 19 When the Lord your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he ·is giving you [L makes you inherit] as your ·own [possession], you shall ·destroy [blot/wipe out] any memory of the Amalekites ·on the earth [L from under the heavens]. Do not forget [C Saul forgot (1 Sam. 15), but the Amalekites (called Agagites) come to an end in the book of Esther (Esth. 3:1)]!
