15 “(A)You shall not hand over to his master a slave who has [a]escaped from his master to you. 16 He shall live with you in your midst, in the place which he shall choose in one of your gates of the towns where it pleases him; (B)you shall not mistreat him.

Purity in the Treatment of the Unprivileged
15 You must not return an escaped slave to his master when he has run away to you.[a] 16 Indeed, he may live among you in any place he chooses, in whichever of your villages[b] he prefers; you must not oppress him.
