Deuteronomy 22
International Children’s Bible
22 You might see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep wandering away. Don’t ignore it. Take it back to its owner. 2 The owner might not live close to you. Or you might not know who he is. Then take the animal home with you. Keep it until the owner comes looking for it. Then give it back to him. 3 Do the same thing if you find his donkey or coat or anything he lost. Don’t just ignore it.
4 You might see your fellow Israelite’s donkey or ox fallen on the road. Don’t ignore it. Help him get it up.
5 A woman must not wear men’s clothes. And a man must not wear women’s clothes. The Lord your God hates anyone who does that.
6 You might find a bird’s nest by the road. It might be in a tree or on the ground. And the mother bird might be sitting on the young birds or eggs. Do not take the mother bird with the young birds. 7 You may take the young birds. But you must let the mother bird go free. Then things will go well for you. And you will live a long time.
8 When you build a new house, build a wall around the roof.[a] Then you will not be guilty of murder if someone falls off the roof.
9 Don’t plant two different kinds of seeds in your vineyard. Otherwise, both crops will be ruined.
10 Don’t plow with an ox and a donkey tied together.
11 Don’t wear clothes made of wool and linen woven together.
12 Tie several pieces of thread together. Then put these tassels on the four corners of your coat.
Marriage Laws
13 A man might marry a girl and have intimate relations with her. But he might decide that he does not like her. 14 So he might lie about her and give her a bad name. He might say, “I married this woman. But when I had intimate relations with her, I did not find that she was a virgin.” 15 Then the girl’s parents must bring proof that she was a virgin. They must bring it to the elders at the city gate. 16 The girl’s father will say to the leaders, “I gave my daughter to this man to be his wife. But now he does not want her. 17 This man has told lies about my daughter. He has said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof that my daughter was a virgin.” Then her parents are to show the sheet to the city leaders. 18 Then the leaders must take the man and punish him. 19 They must make him pay about two and a half pounds of silver. The silver will go to the girl’s father. This is because the man has given an Israelite girl a bad name. The girl must continue to be the man’s wife. And he may not divorce her as long as he lives.
20 But the things the husband said about his wife might be true. And there might be no proof that she was a virgin. 21 If so, the girl must be brought to the door of her father’s house. Then the men of the town must put her to death by throwing stones at her. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel. She had physical relations before she was married. You must get rid of the evil among you.
22 A man might be found committing adultery with another man’s wife. Both the woman and the man who committed adultery with her must die. Get rid of this evil from Israel.
23 A man might meet a virgin in a city and have physical relations with her. But she might be engaged to another man. 24 You must take both of them to the city gate. Put them both to death by throwing stones at them. Kill the girl because she was in a city and did not scream for help. And kill the man for having physical relations with another man’s wife. You must get rid of the evil among you.
25 But a man might meet a girl out in the country. He might force her to have physical relations with him. But she might be engaged to another man. Only the man who forced her to have physical relations with her must be put to death. 26 Don’t do anything to the girl. She has not done a sin worthy of death. This is like the person who attacks and murders his neighbor. 27 The man found the engaged girl in the country. And she screamed. But no one was there to save her.
28 A man might meet a virgin who is not engaged to be married. He might force her to have physical relations with him. And people might find out about it. 29 The man must pay the girl’s father about one and one-fourth pounds of silver. He must also marry the girl because he has dishonored her. And he may never divorce her for as long as he lives.
30 A man must not marry his father’s wife. He must not dishonor his father in this way.

- 22:8 roof In Bible times houses were built with flat roofs. The roof was used for drying things such as flax and fruit. And it was used as an extra room, as a place for worship and as a place to sleep in the summer.

22 Si ves que el toro o la oveja de alguien de tu pueblo se extravía, se lo devolverás. 2 Si el dueño no vive cerca o tú no lo conoces, entonces debes llevar el animal a tu casa y guardarlo hasta que el dueño venga a buscarlo y se lo devuelvas. 3 Haz lo mismo con el burro de tu vecino, con sus prendas y con cualquier otra cosa que él pierda y que tú encuentres. No lo ignores.
4 Si ves caído en el camino al toro o al burro de alguien de tu pueblo, no te quedes sin hacer nada, más bien ayúdalo a levantarse.
5 La mujer no debe ponerse ropa de hombre, y un hombre no debe usar ropa de mujer, porque el SEÑOR tu Dios se enoja con el que hace eso.
6 Si mientras caminas encuentras el nido de un pájaro en algún árbol o en el piso, y la madre está sentada sobre sus pequeños hijos o sobre sus huevos, no tomes a la madre con sus pequeños. 7 Debes dejar ir a la madre y puedes tomar a los pequeños, para que te vaya bien y puedas vivir por mucho tiempo.
8 Cuando construyas una casa nueva, debes hacer un muro de protección alrededor de la azotea para que así no seas culpable de homicidio si alguien se cae de allí.
9 No plantes tu viñedo con otra semilla que no sea de uva. Si así lo haces, quedará prohibido el uso de todo ese producto del campo, tanto el grano como la uva.
10 No ares con una yunta que tenga juntos un toro y un burro.
11 No uses ropa hecha de combinación de lana y lino.
12 Haz flecos en las cuatro esquinas del manto con que te cubres.
Reglas matrimoniales
13 Si un hombre se casa con una mujer, tiene relaciones sexuales con ella y luego la desprecia, 14 la acusa de mala conducta y difama su nombre diciendo: «Yo me casé con esta mujer, pero cuando tuve relaciones sexuales con ella encontré que no era virgen». 15 Los padres de la joven mujer deberán tomar y llevar prueba de la virginidad de la mujer a los ancianos líderes a la entrada de la ciudad. 16 El papá de la joven debe decirles a los ancianos líderes: «Le di a este hombre mi hija por esposa, pero él la odia. 17 Miren, la ha acusado de mala conducta, y dice: Yo encontré que su hija no era virgen. Aquí está la prueba de la virginidad de mi hija». Luego él deberá extender la sábana[a] en frente de los ancianos líderes de la ciudad. 18 Luego los ancianos líderes deberán traer al hombre y castigarlo. 19 Ellos le impondrán una multa de 100 monedas de plata[b] y dársela al papá de la joven, porque ese hombre ha difamado a una virgen de Israel. Ella seguirá siendo su esposa y él no podrá divorciarse de ella.
20 Pero si la acusación es cierta y no se presenta una prueba de virginidad de la joven, 21 entonces los ancianos líderes deben llevarla a la puerta de la casa de su papá y los hombres de la ciudad le tirarán piedras hasta que ella muera, porque ella ha hecho un acto vergonzoso en Israel al tener relaciones sexuales antes de casarse mientras vivía en la casa de su papá. De esta manera quitarás la maldad de tu pueblo.
22 Si se encuentra a un hombre teniendo relaciones sexuales con la esposa de otro hombre, ambos deben morir, tanto el hombre que tiene relaciones como la mujer. De esta manera quitarás la maldad de Israel.
23 Si una mujer es una virgen comprometida con un hombre y alguien la encuentra en la ciudad y tiene relaciones sexuales con ella, 24 entonces ambos deben ser llevados a las puertas de la ciudad y los matarás a pedradas. Debes matar a pedradas a la mujer porque no gritó pidiendo ayuda en la ciudad y al hombre porque violó a la esposa de otro hombre. De esta manera quitarás la maldad de en medio de ti.
25 Pero si el hombre se encuentra a la mujer comprometida en el campo y la obliga a tener relaciones sexuales, entonces sólo el hombre debe morir. 26 No le hagas nada a la joven. Ella no ha cometido ningún pecado que merezca la muerte, porque este caso es como cuando un hombre ataca a su vecino y lo mata. 27 Ya que él la encontró en el campo, la mujer comprometida pudo haber gritado por ayuda, pero no había nadie que la salvara.
28 Si un hombre encuentra a una mujer virgen que no esté comprometida y la obliga a tener relaciones sexuales y son atrapados, 29 el hombre deberá darle al papá de la joven 50 monedas de plata y ella se convertirá en su esposa, porque él la humilló; no le será posible divorciarse de ella.
30 Un hombre no se puede casar con la que fue esposa de su papá porque eso sería una vergüenza para su papá.

22 “You (A)shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep going astray, and [a]hide yourself from them; you shall certainly bring them back to your brother. 2 And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall remain with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him. 3 You shall do the same with his donkey, and so shall you do with his garment; with any lost thing of your brother’s, which he has lost and you have found, you shall do likewise; you [b]must not hide yourself.
4 (B)“You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fall down along the road, and hide yourself from them; you shall surely help him lift them up again.
5 “A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are [c]an abomination to the Lord your God.
6 “If a bird’s nest happens to be before you along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, with the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, (C)you shall not take the mother with the young; 7 you shall surely let the mother go, and take the young for yourself, (D)that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days.
8 “When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring guilt of bloodshed on your household if anyone falls from it.
9 (E)“You shall not sow your vineyard with different kinds of seed, lest the yield of the seed which you have sown and the fruit of your vineyard be defiled.
10 (F)“You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.
11 (G)“You shall not wear a garment of different sorts, such as wool and linen mixed together.
12 “You shall make (H)tassels on the four corners of the clothing with which you cover yourself.

13 “If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and (I)detests her, 14 and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings a bad name on her, and says, ‘I took this woman, and when I came to her I found she was not a virgin,’ 15 then the father and mother of the young woman shall take and bring out the evidence of the young woman’s virginity to the elders of the city at the gate. 16 And the young woman’s father shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as wife, and he detests her. 17 Now he has charged her with shameful conduct, saying, “I found your daughter was not a virgin,” and yet these are the evidences of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. 18 Then the elders of that city shall take that man and punish him; 19 and they shall fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name on a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife; he cannot divorce her all his days.
20 “But if the thing is true, and evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, 21 then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with (J)stones, because she has (K)done a disgraceful thing in Israel, to play the harlot in her father’s house. (L)So you shall [d]put away the evil from among you.
22 (M)“If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die—the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel.
23 “If a young woman who is a virgin is (N)betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, 24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he (O)humbled his neighbor’s wife; (P)so you shall put away the evil from among you.
25 “But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. 26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. 27 For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her.
28 (Q)“If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, 29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father (R)fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife (S)because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.
30 (T)“A man shall not take his father’s wife, nor (U)uncover his father’s bed.
