Deuteronomy 1:41-46

New International Version

⁴¹Then you replied, “We have sinned against the Lord. We will go up and fight, as the Lord our God commanded us.” So every one of you put on his weapons, thinking it easy to go up into the hill country.

⁴²But the Lord said to me, “Tell them, ‘Do not go up and fight, because I will not be with you. You will be defeated by your enemies.’”^(A)

⁴³So I told you, but you would not listen. You rebelled against the Lord’s command and in your arrogance you marched up into the hill country. ⁴⁴The Amorites who lived in those hills came out against you; they chased you like a swarm of bees^(B) and beat you down from Seir^(C) all the way to Hormah.^(D) ⁴⁵You came back and wept before the Lord,^(E) but he paid no attention^(F) to your weeping and turned a deaf ear^(G) to you. ⁴⁶And so you stayed in Kadesh^(H) many days—all the time you spent there.

The Amorites Defeat Israel

⁴²“Then the Lord told me: ‘Tell them not to go up and fight because I will not be in their midst, or else you will be defeated before your enemies.’

⁴³“I spoke to you but you didn’t listen. Instead you rebelled against the command^[a] of the Lord and went up to the hill country. ⁴⁴The Amorites who lived in the hill country came out to engage you in battle. They pursued you like bees do and crushed you from Seir to Hormah. ⁴⁵You returned and cried out in the Lord’s presence, but the Lord didn’t hear your voice or listen to you. ⁴⁶You remained in Kadesh for many days. It was a long time, indeed.”
