Deuteronomy 17

17 “^(A)You shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep which has a blemish or any ^[a]defect, for that is a detestable thing to the Lord your God.

²“^(B)If there is found in your midst, in any of your ^[b]towns which the Lord your God is giving you, a man or a woman who does what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, by violating His covenant, ³and that person has gone and ^(C)served other gods and worshiped them, ^(D)or the sun, the moon, or any of the heavenly ^[c]lights, ^(E)which I have commanded not to do, ⁴and if it is reported to you and you have heard about it, then you shall investigate thoroughly. And ^[d]if it is true and the report is trustworthy that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, ⁵then you are to bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil deed, that is, the man or the woman, and ^(F)you shall stone them to ^[e]death. ⁶^(G)On the ^[f]testimony of two witnesses or three witnesses, the ^[g]condemned shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the ^[h]testimony of only one witness. ⁷^(H)The hands of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. ^(I)So you shall eliminate the evil from your midst.

⁸“^(J)If a case is too difficult for you to decide, between ^[i]one kind of homicide or another, between ^[j]one kind of lawsuit or another, and between ^[k]one kind of assault or another, that are cases of dispute in your ^[l]courts, then you shall arise and go up to ^(K)the place which the Lord your God chooses. ⁹So you shall come to ^(L)the Levitical priests or the judge who is in office in those days, and you shall inquire of them and they will declare to you the ^[m]verdict. ¹⁰Then you shall act in accordance with the ^[n]terms of the verdict which they declare to you from that place which the Lord chooses; and you shall be careful to act in accordance with everything that they instruct you to do. ¹¹^(M)In accordance with the ^[o]terms of the law about which they instruct you, and in accordance with the verdict which they tell you, you shall act; you shall not turn aside from the word which they declare to you, to the right or the left. ¹²But the person who acts ^(N)insolently by not listening to the priest who stands there to serve the Lord your God, nor to the judge, that person shall die; so you shall eliminate the evil from Israel. ¹³Then all the people will hear and be afraid, and will not act ^(O)insolently again.

¹⁴“When you enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and you ^(P)take possession of it and live in it, and you say, ‘^(Q)I will appoint a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’ ¹⁵you shall in fact appoint a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses. One ^(R)from among your countrymen you shall appoint as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves, anyone who is not your countryman. ¹⁶^(S)In any case, he is not to acquire many horses for himself, nor shall he ^(T)make the people return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since ^(U)the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never again return that way.’ ¹⁷And ^(V)he shall not acquire many wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.

¹⁸“Now it shall come about, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this Law on a scroll ^[p]^(W)in the presence of the Levitical priests. ¹⁹And it shall be with him, and he shall read it ^(X)all the days of his life, so that he will learn to fear the Lord his God, ^[q]by carefully following all the words of this Law and these statutes, ²⁰so that his heart will not be haughty toward his countrymen, ^(Y)and that he will not turn away from the commandment to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may ^[r]live long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel.

Psalm 102

Prayer of an Afflicted Man for Mercy on Himself and on Zion.

A Prayer of the afflicted when he is weak and ^[a]pours out his complaint before the Lord.

102 ^(A)Hear my prayer, Lord!
And let my cry for help ^(B)come to You.
²^(C)Do not hide Your face from me on the day of my distress;
^(D)Incline Your ear to me;
On the day when I call ^(E)answer me quickly.
³For my days ^(F)have ended in smoke,
And my ^(G)bones have been scorched like a hearth.
⁴My heart ^(H)has been struck like ^[b]grass and has ^(I)withered,
Indeed, I ^(J)forget to eat my bread.
⁵Because of the ^[c]loudness of my groaning
My ^(K)bones ^[d]cling to my flesh.
⁶I resemble a ^(L)pelican of the wilderness;
I have become like an owl of the ruins.
⁷I ^(M)lie awake,
I have become like a solitary bird on a housetop.

⁸My enemies ^(N)have taunted me all day long;
Those who ^[e]^(O)deride me ^[f]have used my name as a ^(P)curse.
⁹For I have eaten ashes like bread,
And ^(Q)mixed my drink with weeping
¹⁰^(R)Because of Your indignation and Your wrath;
For You have ^(S)lifted me up and thrown me away.
¹¹My days are like a ^[g]^(T)lengthened shadow,
And ^[h]I ^(U)wither away like ^[i]grass.

¹²But You, Lord, ^[j]^(V)remain forever,
And Your ^[k]^(W)name remains to all generations.
¹³You will ^(X)arise and have ^(Y)compassion on Zion;
For ^(Z)it is time to be gracious to her,
For the ^(AA)appointed time has come.
¹⁴Surely Your servants ^[l]take pleasure in her stones,
And feel pity for her dust.
¹⁵^[m]So the ^[n]^(AB)nations will fear the name of the Lord,
And ^(AC)all the kings of the earth, Your glory.
¹⁶For the Lord has ^(AD)built up Zion;
He has ^(AE)appeared in His glory.
¹⁷He has ^(AF)turned His attention to the prayer of the ^[o]destitute
And has not despised their prayer.

¹⁸^[p]This will be ^(AG)written for the ^(AH)generation to come,
^[q]That ^(AI)a people yet to be created ^[r]may praise ^[s]the Lord:
¹⁹For He ^(AJ)looked down from His holy height;
^(AK)From heaven the Lord looked ^[t]upon the earth,
²⁰To hear the ^(AL)groaning of the prisoner,
To ^(AM)set free ^[u]those who were doomed to death,
²¹So that people may ^(AN)tell of the name of the Lord in Zion,
And His praise in Jerusalem,
²²When ^(AO)the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

²³He has broken my strength in the way;
He has ^(AP)shortened my days.
²⁴I say, “My God, ^(AQ)do not take me away in the middle of my days,
Your ^(AR)years are ^[v]throughout all generations.
²⁵In time of old You ^(AS)founded the earth,
And the ^(AT)heavens are the work of Your hands.
²⁶^[w]Even they will ^(AU)perish, but You endure;
All of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will pass away.
²⁷But You are ^[x]^(AV)the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.
²⁸The ^(AW)children of Your servants will continue,
And their ^[y]^(AX)descendants will be established before You.”

Isaiah 42

God’s Promise concerning His Servant

42 “^(A)Behold, My ^(B)Servant, whom I ^[a]uphold;
My ^(C)chosen one in whom My ^(D)soul delights.
I have put My ^(E)Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth ^(F)justice to the ^[b]nations.
²He will not cry out nor raise His voice,
Nor make His voice heard in the street.
³A bent reed He will not break off
And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;
He will faithfully bring forth ^(G)justice.
⁴He will not be ^(H)disheartened or crushed
Until He has established justice on the earth;
And the ^(I)coastlands will wait expectantly for His ^[c]law.”

⁵This is what God the Lord says,

Who ^(J)created the heavens and ^(K)stretched them out,
Who spread out the ^(L)earth and its ^[d]offspring,
Who ^(M)gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk in it:
⁶“I am the Lord, I have ^(N)called You in righteousness,
I will also ^(O)hold You by the hand and ^(P)watch over You,
And I will appoint You as a ^(Q)covenant to the people,
As a ^(R)light to the nations,
⁷To ^(S)open blind eyes,
To ^(T)bring out prisoners from the dungeon
And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.
⁸^(U)I am the Lord, that is ^(V)My name;
I will not give My ^(W)glory to another,
Nor My praise to idols.
⁹Behold, the ^(X)former things have come to pass,
Now I declare ^(Y)new things;
Before they sprout I proclaim them to you.”

¹⁰Sing to the Lord a ^(Z)new song,
Sing His praise from the ^(AA)end of the earth!
^(AB)You who go down to the sea, and ^(AC)all that is in it;
You ^(AD)islands, and those who live on them.
¹¹Let the ^(AE)wilderness and its cities raise their voices,
The settlements which ^(AF)Kedar inhabits.
Let the inhabitants of ^(AG)Sela sing aloud,
Let them shout for joy from the tops of the ^(AH)mountains.
¹²Let them ^(AI)give glory to the Lord
And declare His praise in the ^(AJ)coastlands.
¹³^(AK)The Lord will go out like a warrior,
He will stir His ^(AL)zeal like a man of war.
He will shout, indeed, He will raise a war cry.
He will ^(AM)prevail against His enemies.

The Blindness of the People

¹⁴“^(AN)I have kept silent for a long time,
I have kept still and restrained Myself.
Now like a woman in labor I will groan,
I will both gasp and pant.
¹⁵I will ^(AO)lay waste the mountains and hills
And wither all their vegetation;
I will ^(AP)turn the rivers into coastlands
And dry up the ponds.
¹⁶I will ^(AQ)lead those who are blind by a way they have not known,
In paths they have not known I will guide them.
I will ^(AR)turn darkness into light before them
And ^(AS)uneven land into plains.
These are the things I will do,
And I will ^(AT)not leave them undone.”
¹⁷They will be turned back and be ^(AU)utterly put to shame,
Who trust in ^[e]idols,
Who say to cast metal images,
“You are our gods.”

¹⁸^(AV)Hear, you who are deaf!
And look, you who are blind, so that you may see.
¹⁹Who is blind but My ^(AW)servant,
Or so deaf as My ^(AX)messenger whom I send?
Who is so blind as one who is ^[f]^(AY)at peace with Me,
Or so blind as the servant of the Lord?
²⁰^(AZ)You have seen many things, but you do not retain them;
Your ears are open, but no one hears.
²¹The Lord was pleased for His righteousness’ sake
To make the Law ^(BA)great and glorious.
²²But this is a people plundered and pillaged;
All of them are ^(BB)trapped in ^[g]caves,
Or are ^(BC)hidden away in prisons;
They have become plunder, with no one to save them,
And spoils with no one to say, “Give them back!”

²³Who among you will listen to this?
Who will pay attention and listen in the time to come?
²⁴Who gave Jacob up for spoils, and Israel to plunderers?
Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned,
And in whose ways they ^(BD)were not willing to walk,
And whose Law they did not ^(BE)obey?
²⁵So He poured out on him the heat of His anger
And the ^(BF)fierceness of battle;
And it set him aflame all around,
Yet he did not recognize it;
And it burned him, but he ^[h]^(BG)paid no attention.

The Beast from the Sea

13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the ^[a]seashore.

Then I saw a ^(A)beast coming up out of the sea, having ^(B)ten horns and ^(C)seven heads, and on his horns were ^(D)ten crowns, and on his heads were ^(E)blasphemous names. ²And the beast that I saw was ^(F)like a leopard, and his feet were like those of ^(G)a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of ^(H)a lion. And the ^(I)dragon gave him his power and his ^(J)throne, and great authority. ³I saw one of his heads as if it had been ^[b]fatally wounded, and his ^(K)fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth ^(L)was amazed and followed after the beast; ⁴they worshiped the ^(M)dragon because he ^(N)gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “^(O)Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” ⁵A mouth was given to him ^(P)speaking ^[c]arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for ^(Q)forty-two months was given to him. ⁶And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, ^(R)those who dwell in heaven.

⁷It was also given to him to ^(S)make war with the ^[d]saints and to overcome them, and authority was given to him over ^(T)every tribe, people, language, and nation. ⁸All who ^(U)live on the earth will worship him, everyone ^(V)whose name has not been ^[e]written ^(W)since the foundation of the world in the ^(X)book of life of ^(Y)the Lamb who has been slaughtered. ⁹^(Z)If anyone has an ear, let him hear. ¹⁰^(AA)If anyone ^[f]is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; ^(AB)if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is ^(AC)the ^[g]perseverance and the faith of the ^[h]saints.

The Beast from the Earth

¹¹Then ^(AD)I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had ^(AE)two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a ^(AF)dragon. ¹²He ^(AG)exercises all the authority of the first beast ^[i]^(AH)in his presence. And he makes ^(AI)the earth and those who live on it ^(AJ)worship the first beast, whose ^(AK)fatal wound was healed. ¹³He ^(AL)performs great signs, so that he even makes ^(AM)fire come down out of the sky to the earth in the presence of people. ¹⁴And he ^(AN)deceives ^(AO)those who live on the earth because of ^(AP)the signs which it was given him to perform ^[j]^(AQ)in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image to the beast who *had the ^(AR)wound of the sword and has come to life. ¹⁵And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even ^[k]speak and cause ^(AS)all who do not ^(AT)worship the image of the beast to be killed. ¹⁶And he causes all, ^(AU)the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, ^[l]to be given a ^(AV)mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, ¹⁷and he decrees that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the ^(AW)mark, either ^(AX)the name of the beast or ^(AY)the number of his name. ¹⁸^(AZ)Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that ^(BA)of a ^[m]man; and his number is ^[n]six hundred and sixty-six.
