The Sabbatic Year

15 (A)At the end of every seven years you shall [a]grant a remission of debts. This is the manner of remission: every creditor shall release what he has loaned to his neighbor; he shall not exact it of his neighbor and his brother, because the Lord’s remission has been proclaimed. (B)From a foreigner you may exact it, but your hand shall release whatever of yours is with your brother. However, there will be no poor among you, since (C)the Lord will surely bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, if only you listen obediently to the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all this commandment which I am commanding you today. (D)For the Lord your God will bless you as He has promised you, and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you.

“If there is (E)a poor man with you, one of your brothers, in any of your [b]towns in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, (F)you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand from your poor brother; but (G)you shall freely open your hand to him, and shall generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks. Beware that there is no base [c]thought in your heart, saying, ‘(H)The seventh year, the year of remission, is near,’ and (I)your eye is hostile toward your poor brother, and you give him nothing; then he (J)may cry to the Lord against you, and it will be a sin in you. 10 You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because (K)for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all [d]your undertakings. 11 (L)For the poor will never cease to be [e]in the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.’

12 (M)If your [f]kinsman, a Hebrew man or woman, is sold to you, then he shall serve you six years, but in the seventh year you shall set him [g]free. 13 When you set him [h]free, you shall not send him away empty-handed. 14 You shall furnish him liberally from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your wine vat; you shall give to him as the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; therefore I command you [i]this today. 16 It shall come about (N)if he says to you, ‘I will not go out from you,’ because he loves you and your household, since he fares well with you; 17 then you shall take an awl and pierce it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Also you shall do likewise to your maidservant.

18 “It shall not seem hard to you when you set him [j]free, for he has given you six years with [k]double the service of a hired man; so the Lord your God will bless you in whatever you do.

19 (O)You shall consecrate to the Lord your God all the firstborn males that are born of your herd and of your flock; you shall not work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock. 20 (P)You and your household shall eat it every year before the Lord your God in the place which the Lord chooses. 21 (Q)But if it has any [l]defect, such as lameness or blindness, or any serious [m]defect, you shall not sacrifice it to the Lord your God. 22 You shall eat it within your gates; (R)the unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as (S)a gazelle or a deer. 23 Only (T)you shall not eat its blood; you are to pour it out on the ground like water.

The Feasts of Passover, of Weeks, and of Booths

16 “Observe (U)the month of Abib and [n](V)celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God, for in the month of Abib the Lord your God brought you out of Egypt by night. You shall sacrifice the Passover to the Lord your God from the flock and the herd, in the place where the Lord chooses to establish His name. (W)You shall not eat leavened bread with it; seven days you shall eat with it unleavened bread, the bread of affliction (for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste), so that you may remember (X)all the days of your life the day when you came out of the land of Egypt. For seven days no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory, and (Y)none of the flesh which you sacrifice on the evening of the first day shall remain overnight until morning. You are not allowed to sacrifice the Passover in any of your [o]towns which the Lord your God is giving you; but (Z)at the place where the Lord your God chooses to establish His name, you shall sacrifice the Passover in the evening at sunset, at the time that you came out of Egypt. You shall (AA)cook and eat it in the place which the Lord your God chooses. In the morning you are to return to your tents. Six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and (AB)on the seventh day there shall be (AC)a solemn assembly to the Lord your God; you shall do no work on it.

(AD)You shall count seven weeks for yourself; you shall begin to count seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. 10 Then you shall [p]celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the Lord your God with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give just as the Lord your God blesses you; 11 and you shall (AE)rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your son and your daughter and your male and female servants and (AF)the Levite who is in your [q]town, and (AG)the stranger and the [r]orphan and the widow who are in your midst, in the place where the Lord your God chooses to establish His name. 12 (AH)You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and you shall be careful to observe these statutes.

13 (AI)You shall [s]celebrate the Feast of Booths seven days after you have gathered in from your threshing floor and your wine vat; 14 and you shall (AJ)rejoice in your feast, you and your son and your daughter and your male and female servants and the Levite and the stranger and the [t]orphan and the widow who are in your [u]towns. 15 Seven days you shall celebrate a feast to the Lord your God in the place which the Lord chooses, because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful.

16 (AK)Three times in a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God in the place which He chooses, at the Feast of Unleavened Bread and at the Feast of Weeks and at the Feast of Booths, and (AL)they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed. 17 Every man [v]shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you.

18 “You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your [w]towns which the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. 19 (AM)You shall not distort justice; (AN)you shall not [x]be partial, and (AO)you shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous. 20 Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, that (AP)you may live and possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

21 (AQ)You shall not plant for yourself an [y]Asherah of any kind of tree beside the altar of the Lord your God, which you shall make for yourself. 22 (AR)You shall not set up for yourself a sacred pillar which the Lord your God hates.

Parental Counsel

My son, if you have become (A)surety for your neighbor,
Have [a]given a pledge for a stranger,
If you have been snared with the words of your mouth,
Have been caught with the words of your mouth,
Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself;
Since you have come into the [b]hand of your neighbor,
Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.
Give no (B)sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids;
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hunter’s hand
And like a (C)bird from the hand of the fowler.

Go to the (D)ant, O (E)sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise,
Which, having (F)no chief,
Officer or ruler,
Prepares her food (G)in the summer
And gathers her provision in the harvest.
How long will you lie down, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
10 (H)A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to [c]rest”—
11 (I)Your poverty will come in like a [d]vagabond
And your need like [e]an armed man.

12 A (J)worthless person, a wicked man,
Is the one who walks with a (K)perverse mouth,
13 Who (L)winks with his eyes, who [f]signals with his feet,
Who [g]points with his fingers;
14 Who with (M)perversity in his heart continually (N)devises evil,
Who [h](O)spreads strife.
15 Therefore (P)his calamity will come suddenly;
(Q)Instantly he will be broken and there will be (R)no healing.

16 There are six things which the Lord hates,
Yes, seven which are an abomination [i]to Him:
17 (S)Haughty eyes, a (T)lying tongue,
And hands that (U)shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises (V)wicked plans,
(W)Feet that run rapidly to evil,
19 A (X)false witness who utters lies,
And one who [j](Y)spreads strife among brothers.

20 (Z)My son, observe the commandment of your father
And do not forsake the [k]teaching of your mother;
21 (AA)Bind them continually on your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
22 When you (AB)walk about, [l]they will guide you;
When you sleep, [m]they will watch over you;
And when you awake, [n]they will talk to you.
23 For (AC)the commandment is a lamp and the [o]teaching is light;
And reproofs for discipline are the way of life
24 To (AD)keep you from the evil woman,
From the smooth tongue of the [p]adulteress.
25 (AE)Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her capture you with her (AF)eyelids.
26 For (AG)on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread,
And [q]an adulteress (AH)hunts for the precious life.
27 Can a man [r]take fire in his bosom
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Or can a man walk on hot coals
And his feet not be scorched?
29 So is the one who (AI)goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her (AJ)will not [s]go unpunished.
30 [t]Men do not despise a thief if he steals
To (AK)satisfy [u]himself when he is hungry;
31 But when he is found, he must (AL)repay sevenfold;
He must give all the [v]substance of his house.
32 The one who commits adultery with a woman is (AM)lacking [w]sense;
He who would (AN)destroy [x]himself does it.
33 Wounds and disgrace he will find,
And his reproach will not be blotted out.
34 For (AO)jealousy [y]enrages a man,
And he will not spare in the (AP)day of vengeance.
35 He will not [z]accept any ransom,
Nor will he be [aa]satisfied though you give many [ab]gifts.
