⁴ These are the animals you may eat:

⁶ You may eat any animal that has hooves divided in two and chews the cud.^{[a] 7} But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves, you are not to eat these:

Do not eat their meat or touch their carcasses.^(A)

⁹ “You may eat everything from the water that has fins and scales, ¹⁰ but you may not eat anything that does not have fins and scales—it is unclean for you.^(B)

¹¹ “You may eat every clean bird, ¹² but these are the ones you may not eat:

¹⁹ All winged insects are unclean for you; they may not be eaten. ²⁰ But you may eat every clean flying creature.^(D)

²¹ “You are not to eat any carcass; you may give it to a resident alien within your city gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people belonging to the Lord your God. Do not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

Peter’s Vision

⁹ The^(A) next day, as they were traveling and nearing the city, Peter went up to pray on the roof^(B) about noon.^{[a] 10} He became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing something, he fell into a trance. ¹¹ He saw heaven opened^(C) and an object that resembled a large sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the earth. ¹² In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky. ¹³ A voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat.”

¹⁴ “No, Lord!” Peter said. “For I have never eaten anything impure and ritually unclean.”^(D)

¹⁵ Again, a second time, the voice said to him, “What God has made clean, do not call impure.”^{(E) 16} This happened three times, and suddenly the object was taken up into heaven.

¹⁴ I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself.^(A) Still, to someone who considers a thing to be unclean, to that one it is unclean.^(B)
