“Suppose someone secretly entices you—even your brother, your son or daughter, your beloved wife, or your closest friend—and says, ‘Let us go worship other gods’—gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known. They might suggest that you worship the gods of peoples who live nearby or who come from the ends of the earth. But do not give in or listen. Have no pity, and do not spare or protect them. You must put them to death! Strike the first blow yourself, and then all the people must join in. 10 Stone the guilty ones to death because they have tried to draw you away from the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery. 11 Then all Israel will hear about it and be afraid, and no one will act so wickedly again.

(A)If your brother, your mother’s son, or your son or daughter, or the wife [a]you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying, ‘(B)Let us go and serve other gods’ (whom neither you nor your fathers have known, of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end), (C)you shall not be willing to accept him or listen to him; (D)and your eye shall not pity him; and you shall not spare him or conceal him. (E)But you shall surely kill him; (F)your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. 10 So you shall stone him [b]to death because he has sought (G)to drive you from Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of [c]slavery. 11 Thus (H)all Israel will hear and be afraid and will never again do such an evil thing among you.
