The Essence of the Law

¹² “And now, Israel, ^(A)what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to ^(B)love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

^5 (A)You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, ^(B)with all your soul, and with all your strength.

³³ You shall walk in ^(A)all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live ^(B)and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.

²⁷ So he answered and said, ^(A)“ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ^(B)‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

¹³ ‘And it shall be that if you earnestly ^[a]obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the Lord your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul,

²⁹ Jesus answered him, “The ^[a]first of all the commandments is: ^(A)‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. ³⁰ And you shall ^(B)love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ ^[b]This is the first commandment. ³¹ And the second, like it, is this: ^(C)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than ^(D)these.”

³² So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, ^(E)and there is no other but He. ³³ And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, ^[c]with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, ^(F)is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

³⁷ Jesus said to him, ^(A)“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

^19 (A)We love ^[a]Him because He first loved us.

Obedience by Faith

^20 (B)If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, ^[b]how can he love God ^(C)whom he has not seen?
