Deuteronomy 8:11-20

¹¹“Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, ¹²^(A)lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, ¹³and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, ¹⁴^(B)then your heart be lifted up, and you ^(C)forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, ¹⁵who ^(D)led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, ^(E)with its fiery serpents and scorpions ^(F)and thirsty ground where there was no water, ^(G)who brought you water out of the flinty rock, ¹⁶who fed you in the wilderness with ^(H)manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, ^(I)to do you good in the end. ¹⁷Beware ^(J)lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ ¹⁸You shall remember the Lord your God, for ^(K)it is he who gives you power to get wealth, ^(L)that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. ¹⁹And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, ^(M)I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. ²⁰Like the nations that the Lord makes to perish before you, ^(N)so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 8:11-20

New International Version

¹¹Be careful that you do not forget^(A) the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. ¹²Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,^(B) ¹³and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, ¹⁴then your heart will become proud and you will forget^(C) the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. ¹⁵He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness,^(D) that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes^(E) and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.^(F) ¹⁶He gave you manna^(G) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,^(H) to humble and test^(I) you so that in the end it might go well with you. ¹⁷You may say to yourself,^(J) “My power and the strength of my hands^(K) have produced this wealth for me.” ¹⁸But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,^(L) and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

¹⁹If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods^(M) and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.^(N) ²⁰Like the nations^(O) the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.^(P)

¹¹Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

¹²Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

¹³And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

¹⁴Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

¹⁵Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

¹⁶Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

¹⁷And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

¹⁸But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

¹⁹And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

²⁰As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God.
