The Privilege of Holiness
7 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These seven nations are greater and more numerous than you. 2 When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy[a] them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. 3 You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters, 4 for they will lead your children away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and he will quickly destroy you. 5 This is what you must do. You must break down their pagan altars and shatter their sacred pillars. Cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols. 6 For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.
7 “The Lord did not set his heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! 8 Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. 9 Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. 10 But he does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who reject him. 11 Therefore, you must obey all these commands, decrees, and regulations I am giving you today.
12 “If you listen to these regulations and faithfully obey them, the Lord your God will keep his covenant of unfailing love with you, as he promised with an oath to your ancestors. 13 He will love you and bless you, and he will give you many children. He will give fertility to your land and your animals. When you arrive in the land he swore to give your ancestors, you will have large harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and great herds of cattle, sheep, and goats. 14 You will be blessed above all the nations of the earth. None of your men or women will be childless, and all your livestock will bear young. 15 And the Lord will protect you from all sickness. He will not let you suffer from the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all your enemies!
16 “You must destroy all the nations the Lord your God hands over to you. Show them no mercy, and do not worship their gods, or they will trap you. 17 Perhaps you will think to yourselves, ‘How can we ever conquer these nations that are so much more powerful than we are?’ 18 But don’t be afraid of them! Just remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all the land of Egypt. 19 Remember the great terrors the Lord your God sent against them. You saw it all with your own eyes! And remember the miraculous signs and wonders, and the strong hand and powerful arm with which he brought you out of Egypt. The Lord your God will use this same power against all the people you fear. 20 And then the Lord your God will send terror[b] to drive out the few survivors still hiding from you!
21 “No, do not be afraid of those nations, for the Lord your God is among you, and he is a great and awesome God. 22 The Lord your God will drive those nations out ahead of you little by little. You will not clear them away all at once, otherwise the wild animals would multiply too quickly for you. 23 But the Lord your God will hand them over to you. He will throw them into complete confusion until they are destroyed. 24 He will put their kings in your power, and you will erase their names from the face of the earth. No one will be able to stand against you, and you will destroy them all.
25 “You must burn their idols in fire, and you must not covet the silver or gold that covers them. You must not take it or it will become a trap to you, for it is detestable to the Lord your God. 26 Do not bring any detestable objects into your home, for then you will be destroyed, just like them. You must utterly detest such things, for they are set apart for destruction.
A Call to Remember and Obey
8 “Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors. 2 Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. 3 Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. 5 Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good.
6 “So obey the commands of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and fearing him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the valleys and hills. 8 It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey. 9 It is a land where food is plentiful and nothing is lacking. It is a land where iron is as common as stone, and copper is abundant in the hills. 10 When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.
11 “But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. 12 For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, 13 and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! 14 Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt. 15 Do not forget that he led you through the great and terrifying wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock! 16 He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good. 17 He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ 18 Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.
19 “But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed. 20 Just as the Lord has destroyed other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed if you refuse to obey the Lord your God.

7 “Kon dad-on na kamo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios didto sa yuta nga inyong sudlon ug panag-iyahon, abugon niya ang pito ka mga nasod nga mas daghan ug mas gamhanan pa kay kaninyo: ang mga Hitihanon, mga Gergasihanon, mga Amorihanon, mga Canaanhon, mga Perisihanon, mga Hebhanon, ug mga Jebusihanon. 2 Ug kon itugyan na sila kaninyo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios ug mapildi ninyo sila, laglagon ninyo sila sa hingpit. Dili kamo maghimo ug kasabotan uban kanila o magpakita ug kalooy kanila. 3 Dili kamo makigminyo kanila, ug dili ninyo tugotan ang inyong mga anak nga maminyo sa ilang mga anak, 4 kay ipahilayo nila sa Ginoo ang inyong mga anak ug mag-alagad sila sa ubang mga dios. Ug kon mahitabo kini, mahiagom kamo sa kasuko sa Ginoo ug diha-diha malaglag kamo. 5 Mao hinuon kini ang inyong himuon: panggub-a ninyo ang ilang mga halaran, dugmoka ang ilang mga handomanan nga mga bato, pamutla ang ilang mga poste nga simbolo sa ilang diosa nga Ashera, ug sunoga ang ilang mga dios-dios. 6 Kay kamo nga katawhan gilain alang sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios. Sa tanang katawhan, kamo ang gipili sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios nga mahimong iyang pinasahi nga katawhan.
7 “Gipili kamo sa Ginoo ug gihigugma dili tungod kay mas daghan kamo kay sa ubang mga katawhan, kay kamo pa man gani ang pinakagamay sa tanan. 8 Gipili niya kamo tungod sa iyang gugma kaninyo ug ginatuman niya ang iyang gisaad sa inyong mga katigulangan. Mao gani nga gipagawas niya kamo sa Ehipto pinaagi sa iyang gahom, ug giluwas sa pagkaulipon sa Faraon nga hari sa Ehipto. 9 Hinumdomi ninyo nga ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios mao lang ang Dios. Masaligan siya nga Dios, ug ginatuman niya ang iyang kasabotan nga mao ang paghigugma sa daghang kaliwat nga nagahigugma kaniya ug nagatuman sa iyang mga sugo. 10 Apan ang mga wala nagahigugma kaniya silotan gayod dayon niya ug laglagon.

11 “Busa tumana ninyo pag-ayo ang mga sugo, mga tulumanon ug mga lagda nga ginahatag ko kaninyo karong adlawa. 12 Kon tumanon ninyo kini nga mga sugo ug sundon pag-ayo, tumanon sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios ang iyang kasabotan nga panalanginan niya kamo, sama sa iyang gisaad sa inyong mga katigulangan. 13 Higugmaon niya kamo, panalanginan, ug padaghanon. Hatagan niya kamo ug daghang mga kabataan, ug panalanginan ang mga abot sa inyong yuta: ang inyong mga trigo, duga sa ubas, ug lana. Ug padaghanon niya ang inyong mga kahayopan didto sa yuta nga iyang gisaad nga ihatag sa inyong mga katigulangan ug kaninyo. 14 Panalanginan niya kamo labaw sa uban nga mga katawhan. Walay lalaki o babaye kaninyo nga baog. Ug ang inyong mga kahayopan mosanay. 15 Panalipdan kamo sa Ginoo sa tanang mga balatian. Dili niya ipahi-agum kaninyo kadtong makalilisang nga mga balatian nga inyong nakita didto sa Ehipto, apan ipahi-agum niya kini sa tanang nagadumot kaninyo. 16 Kinahanglan pamatyon ninyo ang tanang mga katawhan nga ginatugyan kaninyo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios. Ayaw ninyo sila kaloy-i, ug ayaw kamo pag-alagad sa ilang mga dios kay mahimo kining laang alang kaninyo.
17 “Basin makaingon kamo sa inyong kaugalingon, ‘Mas gamhanan pa kining mga nasora kay kanato. Unsaon man nato sila pagpapahawa?’ 18 Apan ayaw kamo kahadlok kanila, hinumdomi lang ninyo kon unsa ang gihimo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios ngadto sa hari sa Ehipto[a] ug sa tanang mga Ehiptohanon. 19 Nakita mismo ninyo ang mga dagkong pagsulay, ang mga milagro, ang katingalahang mga butang, ug ang dakong gahom nga gigamit sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios sa pagpagawas kaninyo. Sama usab niini ang pagahimuon sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios sa tanang mga katawhan nga inyong gikahadlokan. 20 Ug unya padad-an sila sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios sa mga katalagman[b] hangtod nga malaglag bisan kadtong nagpabilin ug tago. 21 Ayaw kamo kahadlok kanila kay ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios kauban ninyo, ug gamhanan ug katingalahan siya nga Dios. 22 Anam-anamon ug pag-abog sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios kining mga nasora pinaagi kaninyo. Dili ninyo sila hutdon ug pag-abog diha-diha dayon, kay kon himuon ninyo kini modaghan ang mabangis nga mga mananap. 23 Apan sa ngadto-ngadto itugyan sila sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios kaninyo. Ipataranta niya sila hangtod nga mangalaglag sila. 24 Itugyan niya kaninyo ang ilang mga hari. Pamatyon ninyo sila, ug dili na sila mahinumdoman pa. Walay bisan usa kanila nga makapildi kaninyo, ug pamatyon ninyo silang tanan. 25 Sunoga ninyo ang mga imahen sa ilang mga dios, ug ayaw ninyo kaibgi ang mga bulawan ug mga pilak niini. Ayaw gayod ninyo kini kuhaa kay mahimo kining laang kaninyo. Likayi ninyo kini kay mangil-ad kini sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios. 26 Ayaw kamo pagdala sa inyong balay niining mangil-ad nga mga butang, aron dili usab kamo laglagon uban niining mga butanga. Kinahanglan likayan gayod ninyo kini, kay kini nga mga butang kinahanglan nga laglagon sa hingpit.
Dili Ninyo Kalimtan ang Ginoo
8 “Tumana gayod ninyo pag-ayo ang tanang mga sugo nga ginahatag ko kaninyo karong adlawa, aron magkinabuhi kamo ug dugay ug modaghan, ug makapanag-iya sa yuta nga gisaad sa Ginoo sa inyong mga katigulangan. 2 Hinumdomi ninyo kon giunsa kamo paggiya sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios sa inyong paglakaw sa kamingawan sulod sa 40 ka tuig. Gihimo niya kini sa pagtudlo kaninyo sa pagpaubos ug sa pagsulay kaninyo aron mahibaloan kon unsa gayod ang sulod sa inyong kasingkasing, kon tumanon ba ninyo ang iyang mga sugo o dili. 3 Gipaubos niya kamo ug gipagutman, ug unya gihatagan niya kamo ug manna—usa ka matang sa pagkaon nga wala pa gayod ninyo sukad matilawi ug sa inyong mga katigulangan. Gihimo kini sa Ginoo sa pagtudlo kaninyo nga dili lang sa pagkaon mabuhi ang tawo, kondili sa matag pulong sa Ginoo. 4 Sulod sa 40 ka tuig wala modaan ang inyong mga bisti ug wala manghubag ang inyong mga tiil sa paglinakaw. 5 Sabta ninyo nga sama nga ang usa ka tawo nagadisiplina sa iyang anak, ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios nagadisiplina usab kaninyo.
6 “Busa tumana ninyo ang mga sugo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios. Pagkinabuhi kamo subay sa iyang mga pamaagi ug tahora ninyo siya. 7 Kay dad-on kamo sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios sa maayong yuta, nga may mga lugut ug mga tuboran nga nagadagayday sa mga kapatagan ug kabukiran. 8 Kining yutaa may mga trigo, barley, ubas, igos, pomegranata, olibo, ug dugos. 9 Dili kamo mawad-an ug pagkaon niining yutaa ug dili kamo kulangon sa bisan unsa. Makakuha kamog mga puthaw niining yutaa nga daw sa nanguha lang kamog mga bato, ug abunda ang mga bronsi sa mga bukid. 10 Kon makakaon na kamo ug mangabusog, dayega ninyo ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios tungod sa maayong yuta nga iyang gihatag kaninyo.
11 “Pagbantay gayod kamo nga dili ninyo malimtan ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios ug dili ninyo masupak ang iyang mga tulumanon ug mga lagda nga ginahatag ko kaninyo karong adlawa. 12 Kon makakaon na kamo ug mangabusog, ug kon makapatindog na kamo ug maayong mga balay nga mapuy-an 13 ug modaghan na ang inyong mga mananap, plata, bulawan, ug mga kabtangan, 14 pagbantay kamo nga dili kamo makapasigarbo ug makalimot sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios nga nagpagawas kaninyo gikan sa Ehipto diin kamo giulipon. 15 Gigiyahan niya kamo sa lapad ug makalilisang nga kamingawan nga may lala nga mga bitin ug mga tanga. Kini nga dapit walay tubig, apan gihatagan niya kamog tubig gikan sa batong bantilis. 16 Didto sa kamingawan, gihatagan niya kamo ug manna—usa ka pagkaon nga wala matilawi sa inyong mga katigulangan. Gihimo kini sa Ginoo sa pagpaubos ug sa pagsulay kaninyo aron maka-angkon kamo ug kaayuhan sa kaulahian. 17 Basin baya ug moingon kamo sa inyong kaugalingon, ‘Pinaagi sa akong gahom ug kusog naangkon ko kining tanan nga bahandi.’ 18 Apan hinumdomi gayod ninyo nga ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios mao ang naghatag kaninyo sa katakos nga mahimong adunahan, ug gihimo niya kini aron matuman niya ang iyang kasabotan nga iyang gisaad sa inyong mga katigulangan, nga nagapadayon hangtod karon.
19 “Apan pasidan-an ko kamo karon nga kon kalimtan ninyo ang Ginoo nga inyong Dios, ug mosunod kamo sa ubang mga dios ug mosimba kamo ug moalagad kanila, sigurado gayod nga malaglag kamo. 20 Sama nga gipanglaglag sa Ginoo ang mga nasod sa inyong atubangan, panglaglagon usab niya kamo kon dili kamo motuman sa Ginoo nga inyong Dios.”
