(A)So you will keep the words of this covenant and do them, (B)in order that you may be successful in everything that you do.

10 “You stand today, all of you, before the Lord your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders and your officers, that is, all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones, your wives, and the stranger who is within your camps, from (C)the one who gathers your firewood to the one who draws your water, 12 so that you may enter into the covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath which the Lord your God is making with you today, 13 in order that He may establish you today as His people, and that (D)He may be your God, just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

14 “Now it is not with you alone that I am (E)making this covenant and this oath, 15 (F)but both with those who stand here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God, and with those who are not with us here today 16 (for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed; 17 moreover, you have seen their abominations and their idols made of (G)wood and stone, silver and gold, which they had with them); 18 (H)so that there will not be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; that there will not be among you (I)a root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood. 19 And it shall be when he hears the words of this curse, that he will consider himself fortunate in his heart, saying, ‘I will do well though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart in order [a]to destroy the watered land along with the dry.’ 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the Lord and (J)His wrath will [b](K)burn against that person, and every curse that is written in this book will lie upon him, and the Lord will (L)wipe out his name from under heaven. 21 Then the Lord will single him out for disaster from all the tribes of Israel, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant (M)which is written in this Book of the Law.

22 “Now the future generation, your sons who rise up after you and (N)the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of that land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it, will say, 23 ‘All its land is (O)brimstone and salt, (P)burned debris, [c]unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows on it, like the overthrow of (Q)Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.’ 24 All the nations will say, ‘(R)Why has the Lord done all this to this land? Why this great [d]outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will say, ‘It is (S)because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 And they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they have not known and whom He had not [e]assigned to them. 27 Therefore, the anger of the Lord burned against that land, (T)to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; 28 and (U)the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, fury, and in great wrath, and hurled them into another land, as it is this day.’

29 (V)The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but (W)the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, so that we may [f]follow all the words of this Law.

Restoration Promised

30 “So it will be when all of these things have come upon you, (X)the blessing and the curse which I have placed before you, and you [g]call them to mind (Y)in all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you, and you (Z)return to the Lord your God and [h]obey Him (AA)with all your heart and soul in accordance with everything that I am commanding you today, you and your sons, then the Lord your God will (AB)restore [i]you from captivity, and have compassion on you, and (AC)will gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has (AD)scattered you. If any of your scattered countrymen are at the [j]ends of the earth, (AE)from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will [k]bring you back. (AF)The Lord your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will be good to you and (AG)make you more numerous than your fathers.

“Moreover, (AH)the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your [l]descendants, (AI)to love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, so that you may live. (AJ)And the Lord your God will [m]inflict all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. And you will again [n]obey the Lord, and [o]follow all His commandments which I am commanding you today. (AK)Then the Lord your God will prosper you [p]abundantly in every work of your hand, in the [q]children of your womb, the [r]offspring of your cattle, and in the [s]produce of your ground, for (AL)the Lord will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers; 10 [t]if you [u]obey the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which (AM)are written in this Book of the Law, [v]if you turn to the Lord your God (AN)with all your heart and soul.

11 “For this commandment which I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it far away. 12 It is not in heaven, [w]that you could say, ‘(AO)Who will go up to heaven for us and get it for us, and proclaim it to us, so that we may [x]follow it?’ 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, [y]that you could say, ‘Who will cross the sea for us and get it for us and proclaim it to us, so that we may [z]follow it?’ 14 On the contrary, the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may [aa]follow it.

Choose Life

15 “See, (AP)I have placed before you today life and [ab]happiness, and death and [ac]adversity, 16 in that I am commanding you today (AQ)to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, so that you (AR)may live and become numerous, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but allow yourself to be led astray and you worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that (AS)you will certainly perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter [ad]and take possession of it. 19 (AT)I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have placed before you life and death, (AU)the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your [ae]descendants, 20 (AV)by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and (AW)by holding close to Him; (AX)for [af]this is your life and the length of your days, [ag]so that you may live in (AY)the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

Carefully follow(A) the terms of this covenant,(B) so that you may prosper in everything you do.(C) 10 All of you are standing today in the presence of the Lord your God—your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel, 11 together with your children and your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water.(D) 12 You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant the Lord is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, 13 to confirm you this day as his people,(E) that he may be your God(F) as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 14 I am making this covenant,(G) with its oath, not only with you 15 who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God but also with those who are not here today.(H)

16 You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here. 17 You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold.(I) 18 Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns(J) away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.(K)

19 When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing(L) on themselves, thinking, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way,”(M) they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. 20 The Lord will never be willing to forgive(N) them; his wrath and zeal(O) will burn(P) against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the Lord will blot(Q) out their names from under heaven. 21 The Lord will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster,(R) according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.(S)

22 Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it.(T) 23 The whole land will be a burning waste(U) of salt(V) and sulfur—nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah,(W) Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overthrew in fierce anger.(X) 24 All the nations will ask: “Why has the Lord done this to this land?(Y) Why this fierce, burning anger?”

25 And the answer will be: “It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.(Z) 26 They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.(AA) 28 In furious anger and in great wrath(AB) the Lord uprooted(AC) them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now.”

29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God,(AD) but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.(AE)

Prosperity After Turning to the Lord

30 When all these blessings and curses(AF) I have set before you come on you and you take them to heart wherever the Lord your God disperses you among the nations,(AG) and when you and your children return(AH) to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart(AI) and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes[a](AJ) and have compassion(AK) on you and gather(AL) you again from all the nations where he scattered(AM) you.(AN) Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens,(AO) from there the Lord your God will gather(AP) you and bring you back.(AQ) He will bring(AR) you to the land that belonged to your ancestors, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous(AS) than your ancestors. The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants,(AT) so that you may love(AU) him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. The Lord your God will put all these curses(AV) on your enemies who hate and persecute you.(AW) You will again obey the Lord and follow all his commands I am giving you today. Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land.(AX) The Lord will again delight(AY) in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors, 10 if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law(AZ) and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.(BA)

The Offer of Life or Death

11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.(BB) 12 It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven(BC) to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”(BD) 13 Nor is it beyond the sea,(BE) so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”(BF) 14 No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.(BG)

15 See, I set before you today life(BH) and prosperity,(BI) death(BJ) and destruction.(BK) 16 For I command you today to love(BL) the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live(BM) and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed.(BN) You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you(BO) that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.(BP) Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love(BQ) the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life,(BR) and he will give(BS) you many years in the land(BT) he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
