Deuteronomy 23:9-14

Amplified Bible

⁹“When you go out as an army [to fight] against your enemies, you shall keep yourselves from every evil [thing].

¹⁰“If there is any man among you who is [ceremonially] unclean because of nocturnal emission, then he must go outside the camp; he shall not come back to the camp. ¹¹But when evening comes, he shall bathe in water, and at sundown he may return to the camp.

¹²“You shall also have a place outside the camp to which you may go, ¹³and you shall have a spade among your tools, and when you [prepare to] sit down outside [to relieve yourself], you shall dig a hole with it and shall turn and cover up your waste. ¹⁴Since the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp to rescue you and to defeat your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy (undefiled); and He must not see anything indecent among you or He will turn away from you.

¹²“You shall also have a place allocated outside the camp, so that you may go out there to relieve yourself, ¹³and you shall have a ^[d]spade among your tools, and it shall be when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and shall turn and cover up your excrement. ¹⁴Since ^(B)the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp to save you and to ^[e]defeat your enemies before you, your camp must be ^(C)holy; so He must not see ^[f]anything indecent among you ^[g]or He will turn away from you.

Uncleanness in the Camp

⁹When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure.^(A) ¹⁰If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there.^(B) ¹¹But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset^(C) he may return to the camp.^(D)

¹²Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. ¹³As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. ¹⁴For the Lord your God moves^(E) about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy,^(F) so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.
