The Wilderness Years

2 Then we turned, and set out toward the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and we circled Mount Seir for many days.

2 Then the Lord spoke to me, saying, 3 “You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north. 4 Command the people, saying: You are to pass through the territory of your brothers the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, and they shall be afraid of you. So carefully watch yourselves. 5 Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as a footprint, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession. 6 You may buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you may also buy water from them with money so that you may drink.

7 “For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the works of your hands. He knows your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”

8 So we passed by our brothers, the children of Esau, who lived in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath and from Ezion Geber, and we turned and passed by the way of the Wilderness of Moab.

9 The Lord said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites, nor contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the children of Lot as a possession.”

10 (The Emites lived there in times past, a people as great and as many and as tall as the Anakites. 11 These people, as well as the Anakites, also were regarded as giants,[a] but the Moabites call them Emites. 12 The Horites also formerly lived in Seir, but the children of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them, and settled there in their place, just as Israel did to the land of its possession, which the Lord gave to them.)

13 “Cross over the Zered Valley.” So we went over the Zered Valley.

14 Now the length of time it took for us to come to Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war perished from among the army, just as the Lord swore to them. 15 For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from among their midst, until they were gone.

16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were gone and dead from among the people, 17 then the Lord spoke to me, saying, 18 “Today, you are to pass over through Ar, the border of Moab. 19 When you come close to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the Ammonites as a possession, because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.”

20 (That also is considered the land of giants. Giants formerly lived there, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummites. 21 They were a great people, as numerous and tall as the Anakites. But the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites. Then they dispossessed them and lived in their place, 22 just as He had done for the children of Esau, who lived in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them, and they dispossessed them, and lived in their place even to this day. 23 And the Avvites, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and lived in their place.)

King Sihon Defeated

24 “Arise, set out, and cross the River Arnon. See, I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand. Begin to possess it and contend with him in battle. 25 This day I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of you.”

26 I sent messengers out of the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, 27 “Let me pass through your land. I will only go on the main road. I will not turn aside to the right or the left. 28 You shall sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, only allow me to pass through on foot, 29 just as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar did for me, until I pass over the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God is giving us.” 30 But Sihon, king of Heshbon, would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, so that He might deliver him into your hand as he is to this day.

31 The Lord said to me, “See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land to you. Begin to possess it, so that you may inherit his land.”

32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz. 33 Then the Lord our God delivered him over to us, and we struck him down with his sons and all his people. 34 We took all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed the men, the women, and the children of every city. We left no survivors. 35 We took only the livestock for plunder and the spoils of the cities which we took. 36 From Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, all the way to Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us. The Lord our God delivered all to us. 37 Only you did not come near the land of the Ammonites, nor to any place on the River Jabbok, nor to the cities in the hill country, nor to any place the Lord our God had forbidden us.

16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people, 17 that the Lord spake unto me, saying, 18 Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day: 19 and when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession. 20 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims; 21 a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead: 22 as he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day: 23 and the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.) 24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle. 25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left. 28 Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet; 29 (as the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us. 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day. 31 And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land. 32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz. 33 And the Lord our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people. 34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain: 35 only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took. 36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all unto us: 37 only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the Lord our God forbad us.

2 Luego volvimos y salimos al desierto, camino del Mar Rojo, como Jehová me había dicho; y rodeamos el monte de Seir(A) por mucho tiempo. 2 Y Jehová me habló, diciendo: 3 Bastante habéis rodeado este monte; volveos al norte. 4 Y manda al pueblo, diciendo: Pasando vosotros por el territorio de vuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú,(B) que habitan en Seir, ellos tendrán miedo de vosotros; mas vosotros guardaos mucho. 5 No os metáis con ellos, porque no os daré de su tierra ni aun lo que cubre la planta de un pie; porque yo he dado por heredad a Esaú el monte de Seir. 6 Compraréis de ellos por dinero los alimentos, y comeréis; y también compraréis de ellos el agua, y beberéis; 7 pues Jehová tu Dios te ha bendecido en toda obra de tus manos; él sabe que andas por este gran desierto; estos cuarenta años Jehová tu Dios ha estado contigo, y nada te ha faltado. 8 Y nos alejamos del territorio de nuestros hermanos los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seir, por el camino del Arabá desde Elat y Ezión-geber; y volvimos, y tomamos el camino del desierto de Moab.

9 Y Jehová me dijo: No molestes a Moab,(C) ni te empeñes con ellos en guerra, porque no te daré posesión de su tierra; porque yo he dado a Ar por heredad a los hijos de Lot. 10 (Los emitas habitaron en ella antes, pueblo grande y numeroso, y alto como los hijos de Anac. 11 Por gigantes eran ellos tenidos también, como los hijos de Anac; y los moabitas los llaman emitas. 12 Y en Seir habitaron antes los horeos, a los cuales echaron los hijos de Esaú; y los arrojaron de su presencia, y habitaron en lugar de ellos, como hizo Israel en la tierra que les dio Jehová por posesión.) 13 Levantaos ahora, y pasad el arroyo de Zered. Y pasamos el arroyo de Zered. 14 Y los días que anduvimos de Cades-barnea hasta cuando pasamos el arroyo de Zered fueron treinta y ocho años; hasta que se acabó toda la generación de los hombres de guerra de en medio del campamento, como Jehová les había jurado.(D) 15 Y también la mano de Jehová vino sobre ellos para destruirlos de en medio del campamento, hasta acabarlos.

16 Y aconteció que después que murieron todos los hombres de guerra de entre el pueblo, 17 Jehová me habló, diciendo: 18 Tú pasarás hoy el territorio de Moab, a Ar. 19 Y cuando te acerques a los hijos de Amón,(E) no los molestes, ni contiendas con ellos; porque no te daré posesión de la tierra de los hijos de Amón, pues a los hijos de Lot la he dado por heredad. 20 (Por tierra de gigantes fue también ella tenida; habitaron en ella gigantes en otro tiempo, a los cuales los amonitas llamaban zomzomeos; 21 pueblo grande y numeroso, y alto, como los hijos de Anac; a los cuales Jehová destruyó delante de los amonitas. Estos sucedieron a aquellos, y habitaron en su lugar, 22 como hizo Jehová con los hijos de Esaú que habitaban en Seir, delante de los cuales destruyó a los horeos; y ellos sucedieron a estos, y habitaron en su lugar hasta hoy. 23 Y a los aveos que habitaban en aldeas hasta Gaza, los caftoreos que salieron de Caftor los destruyeron, y habitaron en su lugar.) 24 Levantaos, salid, y pasad el arroyo de Arnón; he aquí he entregado en tu mano a Sehón rey de Hesbón, amorreo, y a su tierra; comienza a tomar posesión de ella, y entra en guerra con él. 25 Hoy comenzaré a poner tu temor y tu espanto sobre los pueblos debajo de todo el cielo, los cuales oirán tu fama, y temblarán y se angustiarán delante de ti.

Israel derrota a Sehón

26 Y envié mensajeros desde el desierto de Cademot a Sehón rey de Hesbón con palabras de paz, diciendo: 27 Pasaré por tu tierra por el camino; por el camino iré, sin apartarme ni a diestra ni a siniestra. 28 La comida me venderás por dinero, y comeré; el agua también me darás por dinero, y beberé; solamente pasaré a pie, 29 como lo hicieron conmigo los hijos de Esaú que habitaban en Seir, y los moabitas que habitaban en Ar; hasta que cruce el Jordán a la tierra que nos da Jehová nuestro Dios. 30 Mas Sehón rey de Hesbón no quiso que pasásemos por el territorio suyo; porque Jehová tu Dios había endurecido su espíritu, y obstinado su corazón para entregarlo en tu mano, como hasta hoy. 31 Y me dijo Jehová: He aquí yo he comenzado a entregar delante de ti a Sehón y a su tierra; comienza a tomar posesión de ella para que la heredes. 32 Y nos salió Sehón al encuentro, él y todo su pueblo, para pelear en Jahaza. 33 Mas Jehová nuestro Dios lo entregó delante de nosotros; y lo derrotamos a él y a sus hijos, y a todo su pueblo. 34 Tomamos entonces todas sus ciudades, y destruimos todas las ciudades, hombres, mujeres y niños; no dejamos ninguno. 35 Solamente tomamos para nosotros los ganados, y los despojos de las ciudades que habíamos tomado. 36 Desde Aroer, que está junto a la ribera del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en el valle, hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad que escapase de nosotros; todas las entregó Jehová nuestro Dios en nuestro poder. 37 Solamente a la tierra de los hijos de Amón no llegamos; ni a todo lo que está a la orilla del arroyo de Jaboc ni a las ciudades del monte, ni a lugar alguno que Jehová nuestro Dios había prohibido.

16 “So it was, when all the men of war had finally perished from among the people, 17 that the Lord spoke to me, saying: 18 ‘This day you are to cross over at Ar, the boundary of Moab. 19 And when you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to (S)the descendants of Lot as a possession.’ ”
