Waarschuwing tegen ongehoorzaamheid
9 Luister, Israël! Nu gaan jullie de Jordaan oversteken. Jullie gaan het gebied veroveren van volken die groter en machtiger zijn dan jullie. Ze hebben grote steden met hemelhoge muren. 2 Er woont een groot volk van grote mensen, de Enakieten. Jullie hebben van hen horen zeggen dat niemand hen kan overwinnen. 3 Maar onthoud dat jullie Heer God Zelf voor jullie uit gaat. Hij zal hen voor jullie overwinnen en hen vernietigen, zoals een vuur dat alles verbrandt. Zo zullen jullie in korte tijd hun gebied veroveren, zoals de Heer jullie heeft beloofd. 4 Maar ga dan niet denken: 'De Heer geeft ons hun land omdat wij zulke goede mensen zijn.' Want Hij doet dat niet omdat júllie zo goed zijn, maar omdat zíj zo slecht zijn. 5 Dáárom jaagt Hij hen weg uit hun land. En Hij geeft het aan jullie, omdat Hij doet wat Hij heeft beloofd aan jullie voorvaders Abraham, Izaäk en Jakob.
6 Onthoud dus goed dat jullie Heer God dit land niet aan jullie geeft omdat jullie zo goed zijn. Want jullie zijn een koppig en ongehoorzaam volk. 7 Vergeet niet dat jullie in de woestijn je Heer God vreselijk boos hebben gemaakt. Vanaf de dag dat jullie uit Egypte vertrokken tot aan de dag dat jullie hier aankwamen zijn jullie Hem ongehoorzaam geweest. 8 Vooral bij de berg Horeb hebben jullie de Heer vreselijk boos gemaakt. Hij was zelfs zó boos, dat Hij jullie wilde vernietigen. 9 Ik was de berg opgeklommen. Ik zou van de Heer de platte stenen krijgen waarop het verbond stond dat Hij met jullie had gesloten. Ik was toen 40 dagen en 40 nachten op de berg en at en dronk niets. 10 De Heer gaf mij daar twee platte stenen waarop Hij Zelf de woorden had geschreven. Daarop stond alles wat de Heer op de berg vanuit het vuur tegen jullie had gezegd toen jullie daar allemaal onderaan de berg stonden. 11 Aan het eind van die 40 dagen en 40 nachten gaf de Heer mij die twee platte stenen van het verbond. 12 Maar toen zei Hij tegen mij: 'Ga snel naar beneden. Want je volk dat jij uit Egypte hebt meegenomen, heeft alles bedorven. Ze zijn Mij nu al ongehoorzaam geworden. Want ze hebben een gouden beeld gemaakt.' 13 Verder zei de Heer tegen mij: 'Ik heb gezien dat dit een koppig en ongehoorzaam volk is. 14 Laat Mij mijn gang gaan, dan zal Ik hen vernietigen. Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat niemand zich later nog zal herinneren dat ze hebben bestaan. En dan zal Ik van jóu een groot en machtig volk maken. Groter en machtiger dan dít volk.'
15 Toen daalde ik de brandende berg af. De twee platte stenen van het verbond hield ik in mijn handen. 16 En ik zag dat jullie al heel snel ongehoorzaam waren geworden aan de Heer God. Jullie hadden een gouden kalf gemaakt. Jullie waren al ongehoorzaam geworden aan wat de Heer had bevolen. 17 Ik gooide de twee platte stenen voor jullie ogen op de grond kapot. 18 Ik liet mij op de berg voor de Heer op de grond vallen, net als de eerste keer. Weer was ik daar 40 dagen en 40 nachten en at en dronk niets. Ik lag daar voor de Heer op de grond vanwege de slechte dingen die jullie hadden gedaan. Jullie hadden Hem vreselijk kwaad gemaakt. 19 En ik was bang voor de woede van de Heer. Want Hij was zó vreselijk boos op jullie, dat Hij jullie wilde vernietigen. Maar ook deze keer luisterde de Heer naar mij. 20 Ook op Aäron was de Heer zó woedend, dat Hij hem wilde doden. Daarom bad ik toen ook voor Aäron. 21 En ik verbrandde het kalf dat jullie hadden gemaakt en waarmee jullie ongehoorzaam aan de Heer waren geweest. Daarna stampte ik het tot poeder en vermaalde het tot stof. Het stof gooide ik in de beek die van de berg stroomde.
22 Ook bij Tabeëra, Massa en Kibrot-Taäva hebben jullie de Heer vreselijk boos gemaakt. 23 En bij Kades-Barnea waren jullie Hem wéér ongehoorzaam. Hij stuurde jullie op weg om het land te veroveren dat Hij jullie had gegeven. Maar jullie geloofden Hem niet. Jullie luisterden niet naar wat Hij zei. 24 Zo lang ik jullie ken, zijn jullie de Heer ongehoorzaam geweest.
25 Ik liet mij toen dus voor de Heer op de grond vallen en lag daar 40 dagen en 40 nachten. Want de Heer had gezegd dat Hij jullie wilde vernietigen. 26 Ik smeekte de Heer om dat niet doen. Ik zei: 'Heer God, vernietig uw volk alstublieft niet! Het is uw eigen volk, dat U op een machtige manier heeft bevrijd. Het is uw volk, dat U met wonderen uit Egypte heeft gered. 27 Denk alstublieft aan uw dienaren Abraham, Izaäk en Jakob. Let niet op de koppigheid van dit volk. Let er niet op dat ze zich niets van U aantrekken. Let niet op hun ongehoorzaamheid. 28 Want anders zullen de Egyptenaren zeggen: 'Omdat de Heer hen niet kón brengen in het land dat Hij hun had beloofd, heeft Hij hen uit Egypte meegenomen. Hij haatte hen. Hij wilde hen doden in de woestijn!' 29 Zij zijn toch uw volk en uw eigendom. U heeft hen door uw grote kracht en macht gered.'

Not Because of Israel’s Righteousness
9 Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan(A) to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you,(B) with large cities(C) that have walls up to the sky.(D) 2 The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”(E) 3 But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you(F) like a devouring fire.(G) He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly,(H) as the Lord has promised you.
4 After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself,(I) “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness(J) of these nations(K) that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity(L) that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness(M) of these nations,(N) the Lord your God will drive them out(O) before you, to accomplish what he swore(P) to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.(Q) 6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.(R)
The Golden Calf
7 Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger(S) of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious(T) against the Lord.(U) 8 At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath(V) so that he was angry enough to destroy you.(W) 9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant(X) that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days(Y) and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.(Z) 10 The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God.(AA) On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.(AB)
11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights,(AC) the Lord gave me the two stone tablets,(AD) the tablets of the covenant. 12 Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt.(AE) They have turned away quickly(AF) from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”
13 And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people(AG), and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14 Let me alone,(AH) so that I may destroy them and blot out(AI) their name from under heaven.(AJ) And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”
15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.(AK) 16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.(AL) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.
18 Then once again I fell(AM) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,(AN) because of all the sin you had committed,(AO) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.(AP) But again the Lord listened to me.(AQ) 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust(AR) and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.(AS)
22 You also made the Lord angry(AT) at Taberah,(AU) at Massah(AV) and at Kibroth Hattaavah.(AW)
23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea,(AX) he said, “Go up and take possession(AY) of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled(AZ) against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust(BA) him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.(BB)
25 I lay prostrate before the Lord those forty days and forty nights(BC) because the Lord had said he would destroy you.(BD) 26 I prayed to the Lord and said, “Sovereign Lord, do not destroy your people,(BE) your own inheritance(BF) that you redeemed(BG) by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.(BH) 27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness(BI) of this people, their wickedness and their sin. 28 Otherwise, the country(BJ) from which you brought us will say, ‘Because the Lord was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them,(BK) he brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.’(BL) 29 But they are your people,(BM) your inheritance(BN) that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm.(BO)”

9 (A)«Ascolta, Israele! Oggi tu stai per passare il Giordano per andare a impadronirti di nazioni più grandi e più potenti di te, di città grandi e fortificate fino al cielo, 2 di un popolo grande e alto di statura: dei figli degli Anachiti che tu conosci e dei quali hai sentito dire: “Chi mai può resistere ai figli di Anac?” 3 Sappi dunque oggi che il Signore, il tuo Dio, è colui che marcerà alla tua testa come un fuoco che divora; egli li distruggerà e li abbatterà davanti a te; tu li scaccerai e li farai perire in un attimo, come il Signore ti ha detto. 4 Quando il Signore, il tuo Dio, li avrà scacciati davanti a te, non dire nel tuo cuore: “È per la mia giustizia che il Signore mi ha fatto entrare in possesso di questo paese”; poiché il Signore scaccia davanti a te queste nazioni, per la loro malvagità. 5 No, tu non entri in possesso del loro paese per la tua giustizia, né per la rettitudine del tuo cuore; ma il Signore, il tuo Dio, sta per scacciare quelle nazioni davanti a te per la loro malvagità e per mantenere la parola giurata ai tuoi padri, ad Abraamo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe. 6 Non è dunque per la tua giustizia che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà il possesso di questo buon paese; perché sei un popolo dal collo duro.
7 Ricòrdati, non dimenticare come hai provocato all’ira il Signore, il tuo Dio, nel deserto. Dal giorno che uscisti dal paese d’Egitto, fino al vostro arrivo in questo luogo, siete stati ribelli al Signore.
8 Anche a Oreb provocaste all’ira il Signore; il Signore si adirò contro di voi, al punto da volervi distruggere. 9 Quando io salii sul monte a prendere le tavole di pietra, le tavole del patto che il Signore aveva stipulato con voi, io rimasi sul monte quaranta giorni e quaranta notti, senza mangiare pane né bere acqua; 10 il Signore mi diede le due tavole di pietra, scritte con il dito di Dio, sulle quali stavano tutte le parole che il Signore vi aveva dette sul monte, parlandovi dal fuoco, il giorno dell’assemblea. 11 Fu alla fine dei quaranta giorni e delle quaranta notti che il Signore mi diede le due tavole di pietra, le tavole del patto. 12 Poi il Signore mi disse: “Muoviti, scendi presto di qui, perché il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dall’Egitto si è corrotto; hanno ben presto lasciato la via che io avevo loro ordinato di seguire; si sono fatti un’immagine di metallo fuso”. 13 Il Signore mi parlò ancora e disse: “Io l’ho visto questo popolo; è un popolo dal collo duro; 14 lasciami fare; io li distruggerò e cancellerò il loro nome sotto il cielo e farò di te una nazione più potente e più grande di loro”. 15 Così io mi volsi e scesi dal monte che era tutto in fiamme; tenevo nelle mie mani le due tavole del patto. 16 Guardai, e vidi che avevate peccato contro il Signore Dio vostro; vi eravate fatti un vitello di metallo fuso, avevate ben presto lasciato la via che il Signore vi aveva ordinato di seguire. 17 Presi le due tavole, le gettai dalle mie mani e le spezzai sotto i vostri occhi. 18 Poi mi prostrai davanti al Signore, come avevo fatto la prima volta, per quaranta giorni e per quaranta notti; non mangiai pane e non bevvi acqua, a causa del gran peccato che avevate commesso facendo ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, per irritarlo. 19 Poiché io avevo paura davanti all’ira e al furore da cui il Signore era invaso contro di voi, al punto di volervi distruggere. Ma il Signore mi esaudì anche quella volta. 20 Il Signore si adirò fortemente anche contro Aaronne, al punto di volerlo far perire; io pregai in quell’occasione anche per Aaronne. 21 Poi presi l’oggetto del vostro delitto, il vitello che avevate fatto, lo gettai nel fuoco, lo frantumai riducendolo in polvere, e buttai quella polvere nel torrente che scende dal monte.
22 Anche a Tabera, a Massa e a Chibrot-Attaava voi irritaste il Signore.
23 Quando il Signore volle farvi partire da Cades-Barnea dicendo: “Salite e impossessatevi del paese che io vi do”, voi vi ribellaste all’ordine del Signore vostro Dio, non aveste fede in lui e non ubbidiste alla sua voce.
24 Siete stati ribelli al Signore dal giorno che vi conobbi.
25 Io rimasi dunque così prostrato davanti al Signore quei quaranta giorni e quelle quaranta notti, perché il Signore aveva detto di volervi distruggere. 26 Pregai il Signore e dissi: “Signore, Dio, non distruggere il tuo popolo, la tua eredità, che hai redento nella tua grandezza, che hai fatto uscire dall’Egitto con mano potente. 27 Ricòrdati dei tuoi servi, Abraamo, Isacco e Giacobbe; non guardare alla caparbietà di questo popolo, alla sua malvagità e al suo peccato, 28 affinché il paese dal quale ci hai fatti uscire non dica: ‘Il Signore non era capace d’introdurli nella terra che aveva loro promessa e, siccome li odiava, li ha fatti uscire di qui per farli morire nel deserto’. 29 Nondimeno, essi sono il tuo popolo, la tua eredità, che facesti uscire dall’Egitto con la tua grande potenza e con il tuo braccio steso”.
