Gods overwinning op koning Og
3 ‘Daarna trokken wij in de richting van het land Basan, waar Og koning was. Hij rukte op met zijn hele leger en raakte slaags met ons bij Edreï. 2 Maar de Here zei mij dat wij niet bang voor hem hoefden te zijn. “Zijn hele volk en al zijn land geef Ik u,” zei de Here mij. “U moet met hem hetzelfde doen als met koning Sichon van de Amorieten bij Chesbon.” 3 De Here hielp ons in de strijd tegen koning Og en zijn volk en wij doodden hen allen. 4 Wij veroverden al zijn zestig steden, de hele streek van Argob in het koninkrijk van Og in Basan. 5 Het waren zestig sterke steden met hoge muren en stevige poorten, plus nog veel onversterkte steden. 6 Wij vernietigden alle steden volledig, net zoals bij koning Sichon van Chesbon. De hele bevolking werd gedood: mannen, vrouwen en kinderen. 7 Alleen het vee en de buit hielden wij voor onszelf. 8 Wij hadden toen het hele gebied van de twee Amoritische koningen ten oosten van de Jordaan in handen, een gebied dat zich uitstrekt van het dal van de Arnon tot aan de berg Hermon. 9 De Sidoniërs noemden de berg Hermon Sirjon en de Amorieten Senir. 10 We hadden toen alle steden op de hoogvlakte veroverd en bezetten Gilead en Basan tot aan de steden Salcha en Edreï. 11 Koning Og van Basan was de laatste van de Refaïeten. Zijn bed, dat wordt bewaard in Rabba, een Ammonitische stad, was van ijzer en was ruim vier meter lang en bijna twee meter breed. 12 De stammen Gad en Ruben gaf ik dit veroverde gebied, dat begint bij Aroër aan de Arnon, en de helft van de berg Gilead, met de daarbij behorende steden. 13 De halve stam van Manasse kreeg de rest van Gilead en het voormalige koninkrijk van koning Og, de streek van Argob. (Basan wordt soms het Land van de Reuzen genoemd). 14 De familie van Jaïr, van de halve stam Manasse, kreeg de hele streek van Argob (Basan) tot aan het gebied van de Gesurieten en Maächatieten. Zij noemden hun gebied naar zichzelf, Havvoth-Jaïr (Dorpen van Jaïr). Zo heet het nu nog. 15 Gilead gaf ik aan de familie Machir. 16 De stammen Ruben en Gad ontvingen het gebied dat zich uitstrekte van de Jabbok in Gilead (die de grens met de Ammonieten vormde) tot het midden van het dal van de Arnon. 17 Zij kregen ook de Arabah (ook wel Vlakte genoemd) in het westen aan de Jordaan grenzend, van Kinneret tot de berg Pisga en de Zoutzee (ook wel de Zee der Vlakte genoemd). 18 Toen herinnerde ik de stammen Gad en Ruben en de halve stam Manasse eraan dat, ook al had de Here het hun nu al gegeven, zij zich pas in dit gebied konden vestigen als hun gewapende mannen met de andere stammen de Jordaan waren overgestoken naar het land dat de Here hun gaf. 19 “Maar uw vrouwen en kinderen,” zei ik tegen hen, “mogen hier blijven wonen in de steden die de Here u heeft gegeven. Zij kunnen dan voor het vele vee zorgen 20 totdat u terugkeert, nadat de Here ook de andere stammen heeft laten overwinnen. Wanneer zij het land dat de Here, uw God, hun aan de overkant van de Jordaan heeft gegeven, hebben veroverd, mag u teruggaan naar uw eigen land hier.” 21 Toen zei ik tegen Jozua: “U hebt gezien wat de Here, uw God, met die twee koningen heeft gedaan. Hetzelfde moet u doen met de koninkrijken aan de overzijde van de Jordaan. 22 Wees niet bang voor de volken die daar leven, want de Here, uw God, zal voor u vechten.”
23-25 In die tijd smeekte ik de Here: “Och Here God, laat mij alstublieft ook oversteken naar het beloofde land—het goede land aan de overkant van de Jordaan met zijn mooie gebergte—en de Libanon. Ik wil zo graag het eindresultaat zien van de grootheid en kracht die U ons hebt laten zien. Want welke God in de hemelen of op aarde kan doen wat U voor ons hebt gedaan?” 26 Maar de Here was vertoornd op mij wegens u en luisterde niet naar mij. “Praat er niet meer over,” beval Hij mij, 27 “maar klim naar de top van de berg Pisga vanwaar u elke richting kunt uitkijken, dan zult u het land in de verte zien liggen. Maar zelf mag u de Jordaan niet oversteken. 28 Bereid Jozua voor, zodat hij u kan opvolgen en bemoedig hem, want hij moet het volk naar de overkant leiden om het land te veroveren dat u vanaf de bergtop zult zien.” 29 Zo bleven wij in het dal tegenover Bet-Peor.’

King Og Defeated
3 Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan, and Og, the king of Bashan, came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 2 Then the Lord said to me, “Do not fear him, for I will deliver him and all his people and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
3 So the Lord, our God, delivered Og, the king of Bashan, with all his people, into our hands also, and we struck him down until there was no survivor remaining. 4 We took all his cities at that time. There was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns. 6 We utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon, king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city. 7 But we took all the livestock and the spoil of the cities as plunder for ourselves.
8 So at that time we took from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was across the Jordan, from the River Arnon to Mount Hermon 9 (the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), 10 all the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, as far as Salekah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 For only Og, king of Bashan, remained of the remnant of the giants. (Notably, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? It is nine cubits long and four cubits wide,[a] according to the cubit of a man.)
Division of the Land
12 This is the land which we possessed at that time from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead and its cities I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites. 13 The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of giants. 14 Jair, the son of Manasseh, took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites, and called the villages after his own name, Havvoth Jair, as it is to this day.) 15 I gave Gilead to Makir. 16 To the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead even as far as the stream bed of the River Arnon, half the valley as the border to the River Jabbok, which is the border of the Ammonites; 17 the plain also, with the Jordan as the border, from Kinnereth as far as the east side of the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea), below the slopes of Pisgah.
18 Then I commanded you at that time, saying, “The Lord your God has given you this land to possess it. All you men of valor shall pass over armed before your brothers, the children of Israel. 19 But your wives and your little ones, and your livestock (for I know that you have much livestock) shall remain in your cities which I have given you 20 until the Lord has given rest to your brothers, as well as to you, and until they also possess the land which the Lord your God has given them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you shall return to his possession which I have given you.”
Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan
21 I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, “Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. So shall the Lord do to all the kingdoms where you pass. 22 Do not fear them, for the Lord your God, He shall fight for you.”
23 I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 “O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness, and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or in earth that can do according to Your works and according to Your might? 25 Let me, I pray, go over and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that good hill country, and Lebanon.”
26 But the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me, and the Lord said to me, “Enough of that! Speak to Me no more of this matter. 27 Get up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes to the west and north and south and east, and see it with your eyes, for you shall not cross over this Jordan. 28 But charge Joshua and encourage him and strengthen him, for he shall cross over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you will see.” 29 So we remained in the valley over against Beth Peor.

(AB)All you men of valor shall cross over armed before your brethren, the children of Israel. 19 But your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have much livestock) shall stay in your cities which I have given you, 20 until the Lord has given (AC)rest to your brethren as to you, and they also possess the land which the Lord your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may (AD)return to his possession which I have given you.’
21 “And (AE)I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings; so will the Lord do to all the kingdoms through which you pass. 22 You must not fear them, for (AF)the Lord your God Himself fights for you.’
Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land
23 “Then (AG)I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying: 24 ‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant (AH)Your greatness and Your [e]mighty hand, for (AI)what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds? 25 I pray, let me cross over and see (AJ)the good land beyond the Jordan, those pleasant mountains, and Lebanon.’
26 “But the Lord (AK)was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me. So the Lord said to me: ‘Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter. 27 (AL)Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift your eyes toward the west, the north, the south, and the east; behold it with your eyes, for you shall not cross over this Jordan. 28 But (AM)command[f] Joshua, and encourage him and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you will see.’
29 “So we stayed in (AN)the valley opposite Beth Peor.
