17 Slacht voor jullie Heer God nooit een dier dat niet helemaal gezond is. Want jullie Heer God vindt dat verschrikkelijk.
2 Stel dat in één van de steden die de Heer jullie gaat geven, iemand wordt ontdekt die ongehoorzaam is aan jullie Heer God. Hij houdt zich niet meer aan het verbond. 3 Hij is andere goden gaan aanbidden en dienen, ook al heeft de Heer dat verboden. Of hij aanbidt bijvoorbeeld de zon, de maan of de sterren. 4 Als jullie zoiets horen, moeten jullie goed nagaan of het waar is. Als blijkt dat zoiets verschrikkelijks inderdaad in Israël gebeurt, 5 moeten jullie de man of vrouw die dit heeft gedaan, naar de poort brengen.[a] Daar moeten jullie hem met stenen doodgooien. 6 Als twee of drie mensen hetzelfde vertellen over wat er gebeurd is, moet die man of vrouw worden gedood. Maar als er maar één getuige is, mag hij niet worden gedood. 7 De mensen die zeggen dat de persoon schuldig is, moeten zelf als eerste een steen gooien. Daarna de andere mensen. Zo moeten jullie het kwaad uit Israël wegdoen.
8 Stel dat een rechtszaak voor jullie te moeilijk is. Bijvoorbeeld als er iemand is gedood, of als er een ruzie is, of als er iemand gewond is geraakt (want dat zijn redenen om naar een rechter te gaan). Ga dan naar de plaats die jullie Heer God zal uitkiezen 9 Vraag daar aan de Levitische priesters en de rechter om raad. Dan zullen zij erover beslissen. 10 Jullie moeten je houden aan de beslissing die zij nemen. Jullie moeten precies doen wat zij jullie hebben gezegd. 11 Jullie mogen niets aan hun beslissing veranderen. 12 Als iemand het waagt om niet te doen wat de priester of de rechter over die zaak heeft besloten, moet hij worden gedood. Zo moeten jullie het kwaad uit Israël wegdoen. 13 Dan zal het hele volk dit horen en diep ontzag hebben en niet meer eigenwijs zijn.
Regels voor het aanwijzen van een koning
14 Straks hebben jullie het land veroverd en wonen jullie in het land dat de Heer jullie geeft. Misschien willen jullie dan een koning hebben, net als de volken om jullie heen. 15 Laat dan de man die de Heer jullie aanwijst, koning over jullie worden. Hij moet iemand van jullie eigen volk zijn, een Israëliet. Dus geen buitenlander, die geen Israëliet is. 16 Maar jullie koning mag niet veel paarden verzamelen (voor het leger).[b] En hij mag geen mensen naar Egypte sturen om meer paarden te krijgen. Want de Heer heeft tegen jullie gezegd: 'Jullie mogen nooit meer naar Egypte teruggaan.' 17 Ook mag hij niet veel vrouwen nemen, want dan zou hij misschien verleid worden om God te verlaten. [c] Ook mag hij niet te veel goud en zilver verzamelen.[d] 18 Als hij koning is geworden, moet hij voor zichzelf een kopie laten maken van deze wet die de Levitische priesters hebben. 19 Hij moet die kopie altijd bij zich hebben en er zijn hele leven in lezen. Zo zal hij leren om diep ontzag te hebben voor zijn Heer God. En zo zal hij zich aan alle wetten en leefregels houden die er in staan. 20 Dan zal hij niet trots worden en zal hij niet gaan denken dat die wetten voor hem niet gelden. En hij zal niet ongehoorzaam worden aan deze wet. Dan zullen hij en zijn zonen lang over Israël regeren.

- Deuteronomium 17:16 God wilde niet dat de koning op de sterkte van zijn leger zou vertrouwen, maar dat hij op Hem zou vertrouwen.
- Deuteronomium 17:17 Koningen trouwden vaak met dochters van verschillende buitenlandse koningen, om zo de kans op oorlog met die koningen te verkleinen. Maar God wilde niet dat de koning op zijn verbonden zou vertrouwen voor zijn veiligheid, maar dat hij op Hem zou vertrouwen. Bovendien brachten die buitenlandse vrouwen hun eigen goden mee het land in, wat de koning gemakkelijk op het verkeerde pad kon brengen.
- Deuteronomium 17:17 God wilde niet wil dat de koning zou vertrouwen op zijn geld waarmee hij bijvoorbeeld een leger kan huren, maar dat hij op Hem zou vertrouwen.

17 Do not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect(A) or flaw in it, for that would be detestable(B) to him.(C)
2 If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant,(D) 3 and contrary to my command(E) has worshiped other gods,(F) bowing down to them or to the sun(G) or the moon or the stars in the sky,(H) 4 and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true(I) and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,(J) 5 take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.(K) 6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.(L) 7 The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death,(M) and then the hands of all the people.(N) You must purge the evil(O) from among you.
Law Courts
8 If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge(P)—whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults(Q)—take them to the place the Lord your God will choose.(R) 9 Go to the Levitical(S) priests and to the judge(T) who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict.(U) 10 You must act according to the decisions they give you at the place the Lord will choose. Be careful to do everything they instruct you to do. 11 Act according to whatever they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left.(V) 12 Anyone who shows contempt(W) for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering(X) there to the Lord your God is to be put to death.(Y) You must purge the evil from Israel.(Z) 13 All the people will hear and be afraid, and will not be contemptuous again.(AA)
The King
14 When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you and have taken possession(AB) of it and settled in it,(AC) and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,”(AD) 15 be sure to appoint(AE) over you a king the Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites.(AF) Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite. 16 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses(AG) for himself(AH) or make the people return to Egypt(AI) to get more of them,(AJ) for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.”(AK) 17 He must not take many wives,(AL) or his heart will be led astray.(AM) He must not accumulate(AN) large amounts of silver and gold.(AO)
18 When he takes the throne(AP) of his kingdom, he is to write(AQ) for himself on a scroll a copy(AR) of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. 19 It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life(AS) so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees(AT) 20 and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law(AU) to the right or to the left.(AV) Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.(AW)

17 Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the Lord thy God any bullock, or sheep, wherein is blemish, or any evilfavouredness: for that is an abomination unto the Lord thy God.
2 If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the Lord thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the Lord thy God, in transgressing his covenant,
3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:
5 Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.
6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.
7 The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.
8 If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the Lord thy God shall choose;
9 And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment:
10 And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they of that place which the Lord shall choose shall shew thee; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee:
11 According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall shew thee, to the right hand, nor to the left.
12 And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the Lord thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.
13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.
14 When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the Lord hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
18 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:
19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:
20 That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.
