Josué sucesor de Moisés

31 Fue Moisés y habló estas palabras a todo Israel, 2 y les dijo: Hoy tengo ciento veinte años(A); ya no puedo ir ni venir(B), y el Señor me ha dicho: «No pasarás este Jordán(C)». 3 El Señor tu Dios pasará delante de ti; Él destruirá estas naciones delante de ti y las desalojarás. Fueron, pues, Moisés y Josué y se presentaron en la tienda de reunión. 15 Y se apareció el Señor en la tienda en una columna de nube, y la columna de nube se puso a la entrada de la tienda(V). 16 Y el Señor dijo a Moisés: He aquí, tú vas a dormir con tus padres(W); y este pueblo se levantará y fornicará tras los dioses extranjeros de la tierra(X) en la cual va a entrar, y me dejará y quebrantará mi pacto que hice con él(Y). 17 Y se encenderá mi ira contra él en aquel día(Z); los abandonaré(AA) y esconderé mi rostro de ellos(AB). Será consumido, y muchos males y tribulaciones vendrán sobre él, por lo que dirá en aquel día: «¿No será porque mi Dios no está en medio de mí que me han alcanzado estos males(AC)?». 18 Pero ciertamente esconderé mi rostro en aquel día por todo el mal que habrá hecho, pues se volverá a otros dioses. 19 Ahora pues, escribid este cántico para vosotros, y tú, enséñaselo a los hijos de Israel; ponlo en su boca, para que este cántico me sea por testigo contra los hijos de Israel(AD). 20 Porque cuando yo los introduzca en la tierra que mana leche y miel, la cual juré a sus padres, y ellos coman y se sacien(AE) y prosperen[f], se volverán a otros dioses(AF) y los servirán, y me despreciarán y quebrantarán mi pacto. 21 Sucederá entonces que cuando muchos males y tribulaciones vengan sobre ellos, este cántico declarará contra[g] ellos como testigo (pues no lo olvidarán los labios de sus descendientes[h](AG)); porque yo conozco el plan que ahora están urdiendo[i] antes de que los traiga a la tierra que juré darles(AH). 22 Y escribió Moisés este cántico aquel mismo día, y lo enseñó a los hijos de Israel(AI).

23 Entonces Él nombró a Josué, hijo de Nun, y le dijo(AJ): Sé fuerte y valiente, pues tú llevarás a los hijos de Israel a la tierra que les he jurado(AK), y yo estaré contigo(AL).

24 Y sucedió que cuando Moisés terminó de escribir las palabras de esta ley en un libro, hasta su conclusión, 25 Moisés ordenó a los levitas que llevaban el arca del pacto del Señor(AM), diciendo: 26 Tomad este libro de la ley y colocadlo junto al arca del pacto del Señor vuestro Dios, para que permanezca[j] allí como testigo contra vosotros. 27 Porque conozco vuestra rebelión(AN) y vuestra obstinación[k](AO); he aquí, estando yo hoy todavía vivo con vosotros, habéis sido rebeldes contra el Señor; ¿cuánto más lo seréis después de mi muerte? 28 Reunid ante mí a todos los ancianos de vuestras tribus y a vuestros oficiales, para que hable estas palabras a sus oídos, y ponga a los cielos y a la tierra como testigos en su contra(AP). 29 Porque yo sé que después de mi muerte os corromperéis y os apartaréis del camino que os he mandado(AQ); y el mal vendrá sobre vosotros en los postreros días, pues haréis lo que es malo a la vista del Señor, provocándole a ira con la obra de vuestras manos.

30 Entonces habló Moisés a oídos de toda la asamblea de Israel las palabras de este cántico hasta terminarlas.

14 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: He aquí se ha acercado el día de tu muerte; llama a Josué, y esperad en el tabernáculo de reunión para que yo le dé el cargo. Fueron, pues, Moisés y Josué, y esperaron en el tabernáculo de reunión. 15 Y se apareció Jehová en el tabernáculo, en la columna de nube; y la columna de nube se puso sobre la puerta del tabernáculo.

16 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: He aquí, tú vas a dormir con tus padres, y este pueblo se levantará y fornicará tras los dioses ajenos de la tierra adonde va para estar en medio de ella; y me dejará, e invalidará mi pacto que he concertado con él; 17 y se encenderá mi furor contra él en aquel día; y los abandonaré, y esconderé de ellos mi rostro, y serán consumidos; y vendrán sobre ellos muchos males y angustias, y dirán en aquel día: ¿No me han venido estos males porque no está mi Dios en medio de mí? 18 Pero ciertamente yo esconderé mi rostro en aquel día, por todo el mal que ellos habrán hecho, por haberse vuelto a dioses ajenos. 19 Ahora pues, escribíos este cántico, y enséñalo a los hijos de Israel; ponlo en boca de ellos, para que este cántico me sea por testigo contra los hijos de Israel. 20 Porque yo les introduciré en la tierra que juré a sus padres, la cual fluye leche y miel; y comerán y se saciarán, y engordarán; y se volverán a dioses ajenos y les servirán, y me enojarán, e invalidarán mi pacto. 21 Y cuando les vinieren muchos males y angustias, entonces este cántico responderá en su cara como testigo, pues será recordado por la boca de sus descendientes; porque yo conozco lo que se proponen de antemano, antes que los introduzca en la tierra que juré darles. 22 Y Moisés escribió este cántico aquel día, y lo enseñó a los hijos de Israel.

23 Y dio orden a Josué(F) hijo de Nun, y dijo: Esfuérzate y anímate,(G) pues tú introducirás a los hijos de Israel en la tierra que les juré, y yo estaré contigo.

Succession of Moses by Joshua

31 Then Moses went[a] and spoke these words[b] to all Israel. 2 He said to them, “Today I am 120 years old. I am no longer able to get about,[c] and the Lord has said to me, ‘You will not cross the Jordan.’ 3 As for the Lord your God, he is about to cross over before you; he will destroy these nations before you, and you will dispossess them. As for Joshua, he is about to cross before you just as the Lord has said. 4 The Lord will do to them just what he did to Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings, and to their land, which he destroyed. 5 The Lord will deliver them over to you, and you will do to them according to the whole commandment I have given you. 6 Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or tremble before them, for the Lord your God is the one who is going with you. He will not fail you or abandon you!” 7 Then Moses called out to Joshua[d] in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will accompany these people to the land that the Lord promised to give their ancestors,[e] and you will enable them to inherit it. 8 The Lord is indeed going before you—he will be with you; he will not fail you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged!”

9 Then Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carry the ark of the Lord’s covenant, and to all Israel’s elders. 10 He[f] commanded them: “At the end of seven years, at the appointed time of the cancellation of debts,[g] at the Feast of Shelters,[h] 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God in the place he chooses, you must read this law before them[i] within their hearing. 12 Gather the people—men, women, and children, as well as the resident foreigners[j] in your villages—so they may hear and thus learn about and fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the words of this law. 13 Then their children, who have not known this law,[k] will also hear about and learn to fear the Lord your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

The Commissioning of Joshua

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The day of your death is near. Summon Joshua and present yourselves in the tent[l] of meeting[m] so that I can commission him.”[n] So Moses and Joshua presented themselves in the tent of meeting. 15 The Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud that[o] stood above the door of the tent. 16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “You are about to die,[p] and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they[q] are going. They[r] will reject[s] me and break my covenant that I have made with them.[t] 17 At that time[u] my anger will erupt against them,[v] and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome[w] them[x] so that they[y] will say at that time, ‘Have not these disasters[z] overcome us[aa] because our[ab] God is not among us[ac] ?’ 18 But I will certainly[ad] hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they[ae] will have done by turning to other gods. 19 Now write down for yourselves the following song and teach it to the Israelites. Put it into their very mouths so that this song may serve as my witness against the Israelites! 20 For after I have brought them[af] to the land I promised to their[ag] ancestors—one flowing with milk and honey—and they[ah] eat their fill[ai] and become fat, then they[aj] will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant. 21 Then when[ak] many disasters and distresses overcome them[al] this song will testify against them,[am] for their[an] descendants will not forget it.[ao] I know the[ap] intentions they have in mind[aq] today, even before I bring them[ar] to the land I have promised.” 22 So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites, 23 and the Lord[as] commissioned Joshua son of Nun, “Be strong and courageous, for you will take the Israelites to the land I have promised them, and I will be with you.”[at]

Anticipation of Disobedience

24 When Moses finished writing on a scroll the words of this law in their entirety, 25 he[au] commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the Lord’s covenant, 26 “Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. It will remain there as a witness against you, 27 for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness.[av] Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the Lord; you will be even more rebellious after my death![aw] 28 Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after I die you will totally[ax] corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in future days because you will act wickedly[ay] before the Lord, inciting him to anger because of your actions.”[az] 30 Then Moses recited the words of this song from start to finish in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:
