Bendiciones de la obediencia

28 (A)Y sucederá que si obedeces diligentemente al[a] Señor tu Dios, cuidando de cumplir todos sus mandamientos que yo te mando hoy, el Señor tu Dios te pondrá en alto sobre todas las naciones de la tierra(B). 2 Y todas estas bendiciones vendrán sobre ti y te alcanzarán(C), si obedeces al[b] Señor tu Dios: 3 Bendito serás en la ciudad, y bendito serás en el campo(D). 4 Bendito el fruto de tu vientre, el producto[c] de tu suelo, el fruto de tu ganado, el aumento de tus vacas y las crías de tus ovejas. 5 Benditas serán tu canasta y tu artesa. 6 Bendito serás cuando entres, y bendito serás cuando salgas(E).

7 El Señor hará que los enemigos que se levanten contra ti sean derrotados[d] delante de ti; saldrán contra ti por un camino y huirán delante de ti por siete caminos. 8 El Señor mandará que la bendición sea contigo en tus graneros y en todo aquello en que pongas tu mano(F), y te bendecirá en la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te da. 9 Te establecerá el Señor como pueblo santo para sí(G), como te juró, si guardas los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios y andas en sus caminos. 10 Entonces verán todos los pueblos de la tierra que sobre ti es invocado[e] el nombre del Señor(H); y te temerán. 11 Y el Señor te hará abundar en bienes, en el fruto de tu vientre, en el fruto de tu ganado y en el producto[f] de tu suelo(I), en la tierra que el Señor juró a tus padres que te daría. 12 Abrirá el Señor para ti su buen tesoro, los cielos, para dar lluvia a tu tierra a su tiempo y para bendecir toda la obra de tu mano(J); y tú prestarás a muchas naciones, pero no tomarás prestado. 13 Y te pondrá el Señor a la cabeza y no a la cola, solo estarás encima y nunca estarás debajo, si escuchas los mandamientos del Señor tu Dios que te ordeno hoy, para que los guardes cuidadosamente[g](K); 14 no te desvíes de ninguna de las palabras que te ordeno hoy, ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda(L), para ir tras otros dioses y servirles.

Consecuencias de la desobediencia

15 (M)Pero sucederá que si no obedeces al[h] Señor tu Dios, guardando todos sus mandamientos y estatutos que te ordeno hoy, vendrán sobre ti todas estas maldiciones y te alcanzarán: 16 Maldito serás en la ciudad, y maldito serás en el campo(N). 17 Malditas serán tu canasta y tu artesa(O). 18 Maldito el fruto de tu vientre y el producto[i] de tu suelo, el aumento de tu ganado y las crías de tu rebaño(P). 19 Maldito serás cuando entres y maldito serás cuando salgas(Q).

20 Enviará el Señor sobre ti maldición, confusión y censura en todo lo que emprendas[j](R), hasta que seas destruido y hasta que perezcas rápidamente(S), a causa de la maldad de tus hechos, porque me has abandonado. 21 El Señor hará que la peste se te pegue hasta que te haya consumido de sobre la tierra adonde vas a entrar para poseerla(T). 22 Te herirá el Señor de tisis, de fiebre(U), de inflamación y de gran ardor, con la espada[k], con tizón y con añublo(V); y te perseguirán hasta que perezcas(W). 23 Y el[l] cielo que está encima de tu cabeza será de bronce, y la tierra que está debajo de ti, de hierro. 24 Y el Señor hará que la lluvia de tu tierra sea polvo y ceniza; descenderá del cielo sobre ti hasta que seas destruido(X). 25 El Señor hará que seas derrotado[m] delante de tus enemigos(Y); saldrás contra ellos por un camino, pero huirás por siete caminos delante de ellos, y serás ejemplo de terror para todos los reinos de la tierra(Z). 26 Y tus cadáveres serán alimento para todas las aves del cielo y para los animales de la tierra, y no habrá nadie que los espante(AA).

27 Te herirá el Señor con los furúnculos de Egipto y con tumores, sarna y comezón, de los que no podrás ser sanado(AB). 28 Te herirá el Señor con locura, con ceguera y con turbación de corazón[n]; 29 y andarás a tientas a mediodía como el ciego anda a tientas en la oscuridad(AC), y no serás prosperado en tus caminos; más bien serás oprimido y robado continuamente, sin que nadie te salve. 30 Te desposarás con una mujer, pero otro hombre se acostará con ella(AD); edificarás una casa, pero no habitarás en ella; plantarás una viña, pero no aprovecharás su fruto[o](AE). 31 Tu buey será degollado delante de tus ojos, pero no comerás de él; tu asno será arrebatado, y no te será devuelto; tu oveja será dada a tus enemigos, y no tendrás quien te salve. 32 Tus hijos y tus hijas serán dados a otro pueblo(AF), mientras tus ojos miran y desfallecen por ellos continuamente, pero no habrá nada que puedas hacer[p]. 33 Un pueblo que no conoces comerá el producto de tu suelo y de todo tu trabajo, y no serás más que un pueblo oprimido y quebrantado todos los días(AG). 34 Y te volverás loco por lo que verán tus ojos[q]. 35 Te herirá el Señor en las rodillas y en las piernas con pústulas malignas de las que no podrás ser sanado(AH), desde la planta de tu pie hasta la coronilla. 36 El Señor te llevará a ti y a tu rey, al que hayas puesto sobre ti, a una nación que ni tú ni tus padres habéis conocido(AI), y allí servirás a otros dioses de madera y de piedra(AJ). 37 Y vendrás a ser motivo de horror, proverbio y burla entre todos los pueblos donde el Señor te lleve(AK).

38 Sacarás mucha semilla al campo, pero recogerás poco(AL), porque la langosta la devorará(AM). 39 Plantarás y cultivarás viñas, pero no beberás del vino ni recogerás las uvas(AN), porque el gusano se las comerá. 40 Tendrás olivos por todo tu territorio pero no te ungirás con el aceite, porque tus aceitunas se caerán(AO). 41 Tendrás[r] hijos e hijas, pero no serán tuyos(AP), porque irán al cautiverio. 42 Todos tus árboles y el fruto de tu suelo los consumirá[s] la langosta[t](AQ). 43 El forastero que esté en medio de ti se elevará sobre ti cada vez más alto, pero tú descenderás cada vez más bajo(AR). 44 Él te prestará, pero tú no le prestarás a él(AS); él será la cabeza y tú serás la cola(AT). 45 Y todas estas maldiciones vendrán sobre ti y te perseguirán y te alcanzarán hasta que seas destruido(AU), porque tú no escuchaste la voz del Señor tu Dios, no guardando los mandamientos y estatutos que Él te mandó. 46 Y serán señal y maravilla(AV) sobre ti y sobre tu descendencia[u] para siempre. 47 Por cuanto no serviste al Señor tu Dios con alegría y con gozo de corazón, cuando tenías[v] la abundancia de todas las cosas(AW), 48 por tanto servirás a tus enemigos, los cuales el Señor enviará contra ti: en hambre, en sed, en desnudez y en escasez de todas las cosas(AX); Él pondrá yugo de hierro sobre tu cuello(AY) hasta que te haya destruido.

49 El Señor levantará contra ti una nación de lejos, desde el extremo de la tierra(AZ), que descenderá rauda como águila(BA), una nación cuya lengua no entenderás(BB), 50 una nación de rostro fiero que no tendrá respeto al anciano(BC) ni tendrá compasión del niño[w]. 51 Se comerá la cría[x] de tu ganado y el fruto de tu suelo, hasta que seas destruido; tampoco te dejará grano, ni mosto, ni aceite, ni el aumento de tu ganado, ni las crías de tu rebaño, hasta que te haya hecho perecer. 52 Y esa nación te pondrá sitio en todas tus ciudades[y], hasta que tus muros altos y fortificados en los cuales tú confiabas caigan por toda tu tierra; y te sitiará en todas tus ciudades[z](BD), por toda la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te ha dado. 53 Entonces comerás el fruto de tu vientre, la carne de tus hijos y de tus hijas(BE) que el Señor tu Dios te ha dado, en el asedio y en la angustia con que tu enemigo te oprimirá[aa]. 54 El hombre que es tierno[ab] y muy delicado en medio de ti, será hostil[ac] hacia su hermano, hacia la mujer que ama[ad] y hacia el resto de sus hijos que le queden, 55 y no dará a ninguno de ellos nada de la carne de sus hijos que se comerá, ya que no le quedará nada en el asedio y en la angustia con que tu enemigo te oprimirá[ae] en todas tus ciudades[af]. 56 La mujer tierna[ag] y delicada en medio tuyo, que no osaría poner la planta de su pie en tierra por ser delicada y tierna, será hostil[ah] hacia el esposo que ama[ai], también hacia su hijo, hacia su hija(BF), 57 hacia la placenta que salga de su seno[aj] y hacia los hijos que dé a luz(BG); porque se los comerá en secreto por falta de otra cosa, en el asedio y en la angustia con que tu enemigo te oprimirá[ak] en tus ciudades[al].

58 Si no cuidas de poner en práctica todas las palabras de esta ley que están escritas en este libro, temiendo[am] este nombre glorioso y temible(BH), el Señor tu Dios(BI), 59 entonces el Señor hará horribles tus plagas y las plagas de tus descendientes[an], plagas severas[ao] y duraderas, y enfermedades perniciosas y crónicas. 60 Y traerá de nuevo sobre ti todas las enfermedades de Egipto(BJ) de las cuales tenías temor, y no te dejarán[ap]. 61 También toda enfermedad y toda plaga que no están escritas en el libro de esta ley, el Señor traerá sobre ti hasta que seas destruido(BK). 62 Y quedaréis pocos en número, aunque erais multitud como las estrellas del cielo(BL); porque no obedeciste al[aq] Señor tu Dios. 63 Y sucederá que tal como el Señor se deleitaba en vosotros para prosperaros y multiplicaros(BM), así el Señor se deleitará en vosotros para haceros perecer y destruiros(BN); y seréis arrancados de la tierra en la cual entráis para poseerla(BO). 64 Además, el Señor te dispersará entre todos los pueblos de un extremo de la tierra hasta el otro extremo de la tierra(BP); y allí servirás a otros dioses, de madera y de piedra, que ni tú ni tus padres habéis conocido(BQ). 65 Y entre esas naciones no hallarás descanso(BR), y no habrá reposo para la planta de tu pie, sino que allí el Señor te dará un corazón temeroso(BS), desfallecimiento de ojos y desesperación de alma. 66 Y tendrás la vida pendiente de un hilo[ar]; y estarás aterrado de noche y de día, y no tendrás seguridad de tu vida. 67 Por la mañana dirás: «¡Oh, si fuera la tarde!». Y por la tarde dirás: «¡Oh, si fuera la mañana(BT)!» por causa del espanto de tu corazón con que temerás y por lo que verán tus ojos[as]. 68 Y te hará volver el Señor a Egipto en naves, por el camino del cual yo te había dicho: «Nunca más volverás a verlo». Y allí os ofreceréis en venta como esclavos y esclavas a vuestros enemigos, pero no habrá comprador.

28 Om du i allt lyder Herren, din Gud, och följer alla de befallningar som jag idag ger för dig, ska Herren, din Gud, upphöja dig över alla andra folk på jorden 2 och alla dessa välsignelser ska nå dig och komma över dig, om du lyder Herren, din Gud:

3 Du ska vara välsignad i staden och välsignad på fälten.

4 Du ska bli välsignad med många barn, rika skördar och stora boskapshjordar.

5 Din korg och ditt baktråg ska vara välsignade.

6 Du ska vara välsignad när du går in och välsignad när du går ut.

7 Herren ska slå ner dina fiender åt dig när de anfaller dig. De ska dra ut i strid mot dig från ett håll men fly bort från dig åt sju olika håll. 8 Herren ska välsigna dina lador och allt du företar dig. Han ska välsigna dig i det land som Herren, din Gud, vill ge dig.

9 Han kommer att göra dig till sitt heliga folk så som han har med ed lovat dig, om du lyder honom och vandrar på hans vägar. 10 Alla jordens folk ska se att du tillhör Herren[a] och de ska frukta dig.

11 Herren kommer att ge dig ett överflöd av allt som är gott så som han med ed lovade dina förfäder, många barn, rikligt med boskap och stora skördar. 12 Herren ska öppna sina förrådshus i himlen så att du får rikligt med regn i rätt tid. Han ska välsigna allt du gör och du ska kunna ge lån till andra folk men aldrig själv behöva låna. 13 Herren kommer att göra dig till huvud och inte till svans och du ska komma till överläge, inte underläge, om du lyder de Herrens, din Guds, befallningar som jag idag ger dig och följer dem noga. 14 Vik inte av åt något håll från något av de bud jag ger dig och börja inte följa och tjäna andra gudar.

Förbannelser på grund av olydnad

(3 Mos 26:14-39)

15 Om du inte lyssnar till Herren, din Gud, och inte lyder de lagar som jag ger dig idag, då ska alla dessa förbannelser drabba dig:

16 Du ska vara förbannad i staden och förbannad på fälten.

17 Din korg och ditt baktråg ska vara förbannade.

18 Förbannelse ska komma över de barn du får och skörden du skördar och förbannelse över din boskaps kalvar och över dina lamm.

19 Du ska vara förbannad när du går in och förbannad när du går ut.

20 Herren ska sända förbannelse, förvirring och fruktan över dig i allt du gör tills du slutligen går under, eftersom du har gjort det onda och övergett mig. 21 Herren kommer att sända sjukdomar tills han har utrotat dig ur det land som du nu ska gå och ta i besittning. 22 Herren ska slå dig med kroppslig svaghet, feber och inflammationer, förödande hetta och torka, och med mjöldagg och mögel som härjar din säd. Detta ska förfölja dig tills du förgås.

23 Himlen ovanför dig kommer att vara som koppar och jorden under dig som järn. 24 Regnet ska Herren förvandla till dammoln som helt kommer att övertäcka dig tills du går under.

25 Herren ska låta dina fiender besegra dig. Om du drar ut i strid mot dem från ett håll, ska du få fly för dem åt sju olika håll. Du kommer att bli ett avskräckande exempel för alla riken på jorden. 26 Dina döda ska bli mat åt himlens fåglar och åt vilddjuren och ingen ska finnas som kan jaga bort dem. 27 Herren ska låta Egyptens bölder, svulster, skabb och klåda komma över dig och det ska inte finnas någon bot för dig. 28 Han ska sända galenskap, blindhet och förvirring över dig. 29 Du ska famla omkring mitt på ljusa dagen som en blind i sitt mörker. Du ska inte lyckas i något du gör utan ständigt vara förtryckt och utsugen. Ingen ska kunna rädda dig.

30 Någon annan ska ta din fästmö och våldta henne. Du ska inte få bo i det hus du har byggt. Du ska inte få skörda frukten från vingården du har planterat. 31 Din oxe ska slaktas framför ögonen på dig, men du ska inte själv få äta av köttet. Din åsna ska tas ifrån dig med våld för att aldrig återlämnas. Dina får ska överlämnas till dina fiender och ingen ska kunna rädda dig. 32 Dina söner och döttrar ska inför dina ögon ges åt ett främmande folk. Du kommer att gråta dig trött av längtan efter dem, men du ska inte kunna göra något för att hjälpa dem. 33 Ett främmande folk som du inte känner ska äta upp den skörd som du har arbetat så hårt för. Du ska ständigt vara förtryckt och utsatt för våld. 34 Du kommer att förlora förståndet inför allt du ser omkring dig.

35 Herren ska låta smärtsamma och obotliga bölder slå upp på dina knän och ben, ja, bölderna ska täcka dig från fötterna ända upp till huvudet.

36 Herren kommer att driva bort både dig och den kung du valt till din härskare till ett folk som varken du eller dina förfäder kände till. Där kommer du att tillbe gudar av trä och sten. 37 Du ska bli ett avskräckande exempel, ett ordspråk och en nidvisa bland alla de folk dit Herren kommer att fördriva dig.

38 Du ska så mycket men skörda lite, för gräshopporna kommer att äta upp dina skördar. 39 Du ska plantera vingårdar och vårda dem väl, men du kommer inte att få äta deras druvor eller dricka deras vin, för maskar kommer att fördärva plantorna. 40 Olivträd ska växa överallt, men du får aldrig någon olja att använda, för träden ska tappa sin frukt. 41 De söner och döttrar du får kommer att bli bortförda i fångenskap. 42 Gräshopporna ska förstöra dina träd och det som växer på dina åkrar. 43 Utlänningen som bor hos dig kommer att höja sig över dig, medan du själv ska sjunka allt djupare. 44 Han ska låna ut pengar till dig, men du kommer inte att ha något att låna ut till honom. Han ska bli huvud och du ska bli svans.

45 Alla dessa förbannelser ska drabba dig, förfölja dig och komma över dig tills du är krossad, därför att du inte lyssnade till Herren, din Gud, och inte följde de bud och befallningar som han gav dig. 46 Dessa förbannelser ska bli till tecken och varning mitt ibland dig och dina efterkommande för alltid. 47 Eftersom du inte tjänade Herren, din Gud, med glatt och villigt hjärta medan du hade överflöd på allt, 48 ska du istället tvingas gå hungrig, törstig, naken och fattig och bli slav under de fiender Herren sänder mot dig. Ett ok av järn ska placeras runt din hals tills du har utplånats.

49 Herren ska sända ett avlägset folk från jordens ände mot dig och det ska slå ner på dig som en örn. Det är ett folk vars språk du inte förstår, 50 ett folk med grymma män som inte har förbarmande vare sig med ung eller gammal. 51 De ska äta upp all din boskap och all din skörd tills det är slut med dig. De ska inte lämna kvar något av din säd, ditt vin, din olja, dina kalvar och dina lamm utan de ska ruinera dig. 52 De ska belägra dina städer tills alla de höga och befästa murar som du såg som ett så säkert skydd faller. De ska belägra dig överallt i alla dina städer i det land Herren, din Gud, har gett dig.

53 I den nöd som fienden vållar under belägringen ska du drivas till att äta dina egna söners och döttrars kött, dina barns, som Herren, din Gud, har gett dig. 54 En vek och bortskämd man bland er ska bli fullkomligt hänsynslös mot sin egen bror, mot sin älskade hustru och mot de barn som ännu lever. 55 Han ska vägra dem att smaka av det kött han själv äter – köttet av hans egna barn, det enda han har kvar att äta i den nöd som uppstår då fienden belägrar dina städer. 56 En vek och bortskämd kvinna som knappt behövt nudda marken med sin fot, kommer inte att vilja dela med sig åt sin älskade make, sin son eller dotter, 57 utan både moderkakan och det barn hon föder ska hon gömma för att ha till mat åt sig själv. Så fruktansvärd kommer nöden att vara under den belägring som dina fiender ska utsätta dina städer för.

58 Om du inte noga följer allt som står i denna lag som finns nedskriven i denna bok och inte fruktar detta stora och fruktansvärda namn Herren[b], din Gud, 59 ska Herren sända obotliga plågor och sjukdomar över dig och dina efterkommande, svåra sjukdomar som inte går över. 60 Han ska låta alla Egyptens sjukdomar som du var så rädd för komma över dig. 61 Men inte nog med det, Herren ska låta dig drabbas av andra sjukdomar och plågor som inte ens finns omnämnda i denna lagbok tills du blir utplånad. 62 Det ska inte finnas många kvar av er, fastän ni tidigare var talrika som stjärnorna på himlen, därför att du inte lyssnat till Herren, din Gud. 63 Precis som Herren gladde sig åt att ge er framgång och föröka er, ska han då glädjas över att få förgöra er. Ni kommer att försvinna ur det land som du nu ska lägga under dig.

64 Herren ska sprida ut dig bland alla folk från jordens ena ända till den andra. Där ska du tillbe andra gudar som varken du eller dina förfäder tidigare kände till gudar av trä och sten. 65 Du ska inte finna någon ro bland dessa folk och ingen vila för din fot. Herren ska låta dig leva i ängslan med sorgsen blick och missmod. 66 Ditt liv ska vara i ständig fara. Natt och dag ska du leva i rädsla och inte veta om du kommer att överleva. 67 På morgonen ska du säga: ”Om det ändå vore kväll!” Och på kvällen ska du säga: ”Om det ändå vore morgon!” Skräcken ska fylla dig inifrån och när du öppnar ögonen, ska du se den mitt framför dig. 68 Herren ska sända dig tillbaka till Egypten med skepp, en resa jag lovade att du aldrig skulle behöva göra. Där kommer ni att erbjuda er själva som slavar till era fiender, men ingen ska finnas som vill köpa er.

Blessings for Obedience

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow(A) all his commands(B) I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.(C) 2 All these blessings will come on you(D) and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

3 You will be blessed(E) in the city and blessed in the country.(F)

4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.(G)

5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.(H)

7 The Lord will grant that the enemies(I) who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.(J)

8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless(K) you in the land he is giving you.

9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people,(L) as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands(M) of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name(N) of the Lord, and they will fear you. 11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock(O) and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(P)

12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse(Q) of his bounty,(R) to send rain(S) on your land in season and to bless(T) all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.(U) 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow(V) them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.(W) 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left,(X) following other gods and serving them.

Curses for Disobedience

15 However, if you do not obey(Y) the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today,(Z) all these curses will come on you and overtake you:(AA)

16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country.(AB)

17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.(AC)

18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.(AD)

19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.(AE)

20 The Lord will send on you curses,(AF) confusion and rebuke(AG) in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin(AH) because of the evil(AI) you have done in forsaking him.[a] 21 The Lord will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess.(AJ) 22 The Lord will strike you with wasting disease,(AK) with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought,(AL) with blight(AM) and mildew, which will plague(AN) you until you perish.(AO) 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron.(AP) 24 The Lord will turn the rain(AQ) of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed.

25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated(AR) before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven,(AS) and you will become a thing of horror(AT) to all the kingdoms on earth.(AU) 26 Your carcasses will be food for all the birds(AV) and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.(AW) 27 The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt(AX) and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. 29 At midday you will grope(AY) about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue(AZ) you.

30 You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her.(BA) You will build a house, but you will not live in it.(BB) You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit.(BC) 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation,(BD) and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. 33 A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression(BE) all your days.(BF) 34 The sights you see will drive you mad.(BG) 35 The Lord will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils(BH) that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.(BI)

36 The Lord will drive you and the king(BJ) you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your ancestors.(BK) There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone.(BL) 37 You will become a thing of horror,(BM) a byword(BN) and an object of ridicule(BO) among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(BP)

38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little,(BQ) because locusts(BR) will devour(BS) it. 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine(BT) or gather the grapes, because worms will eat(BU) them.(BV) 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off.(BW) 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.(BX) 42 Swarms of locusts(BY) will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

43 The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.(BZ) 44 They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them.(CA) They will be the head, but you will be the tail.(CB)

45 All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you(CC) until you are destroyed,(CD) because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever.(CE) 47 Because you did not serve(CF) the Lord your God joyfully and gladly(CG) in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst,(CH) in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke(CI) on your neck(CJ) until he has destroyed you.

49 The Lord will bring a nation against you(CK) from far away, from the ends of the earth,(CL) like an eagle(CM) swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,(CN) 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old(CO) or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine(CP) or olive oil,(CQ) nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.(CR) 52 They will lay siege(CS) to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.(CT)

53 Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.(CU) 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.(CV) 56 The most gentle and sensitive(CW) woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter(CX) 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them(CY) secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities.

58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law,(CZ) which are written in this book, and do not revere(DA) this glorious and awesome name(DB)—the Lord your God— 59 the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt(DC) that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law,(DD) until you are destroyed.(DE) 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky(DF) will be left but few(DG) in number, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as it pleased(DH) the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please(DI) him to ruin and destroy you.(DJ) You will be uprooted(DK) from the land you are entering to possess.

64 Then the Lord will scatter(DL) you among all nations,(DM) from one end of the earth to the other.(DN) There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.(DO) 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place(DP) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes(DQ) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.(DR) 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. 67 In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.(DS) 68 The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.(DT) There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.

28 “Now it shall come to pass, (B)if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God (C)will set you high above all nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and (D)overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:

3 (E)“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be (F)in the country.

4 “Blessed shall be (G)the [a]fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

5 “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

6 (H)“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

7 “The Lord (I)will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

8 “The Lord will (J)command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you (K)set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

18 “Cursed shall be the [e]fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

19 “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

20 “The Lord will send on you (W)cursing, (X)confusion, and (Y)rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me. 21 The Lord will make the [f]plague cling to you until He has consumed you from the land which you are going to possess. 22 (Z)The Lord will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with severe burning fever, with the sword, with (AA)scorching,[g] and with mildew; they shall pursue you until you perish. 23 And (AB)your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron. 24 The Lord will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

25 (AC)“The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them; and you shall become [h]troublesome to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 (AD)Your carcasses shall be food for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and no one shall frighten them away. 27 The Lord will strike you with (AE)the boils of Egypt, with (AF)tumors, with the scab, and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed. 28 The Lord will strike you with madness and blindness and (AG)confusion of heart. 29 And you shall (AH)grope at noonday, as a blind man gropes in darkness; you shall not prosper in your ways; you shall be only oppressed and plundered continually, and no one shall save you.

30 (AI)“You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall lie with her; (AJ)you shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it; (AK)you shall plant a vineyard, but shall not gather its grapes. 31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat of it; your donkey shall be violently taken away from before you, and shall not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you shall have no one to rescue them. 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to (AL)another people, and your eyes shall look and (AM)fail with longing for them all day long; and there shall be [i]no strength in your (AN)hand. 33 A nation whom you have not known shall eat (AO)the fruit of your land and the produce of your labor, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually. 34 So you shall be driven mad because of the sight which your eyes see. 35 The Lord will strike you in the knees and on the legs with severe boils which cannot be healed, and from the sole of your foot to the top of your head.

36 “The Lord will (AP)bring you and the king whom you set over you to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and (AQ)there you shall serve other gods—wood and stone. 37 And you shall become (AR)an[j] astonishment, a proverb, (AS)and a byword among all nations where the Lord will drive you.

38 (AT)“You shall carry much seed out to the field but gather little in, for (AU)the locust shall [k]consume it. 39 You shall plant vineyards and tend them, but you shall neither drink of the (AV)wine nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. 40 You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil; for your olives shall drop off. 41 You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for (AW)they shall go into captivity. 42 Locusts shall [l]consume all your trees and the produce of your land.

43 “The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

45 “Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you [m]did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon (AX)you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever.

47 (AY)“Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart, (AZ)for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you, in (BA)hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He (BB)will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 (BC)The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, (BD)as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, (BE)which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you.

52 “They shall (BF)besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the Lord your God has given you. 53 (BG)You shall eat the [n]fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and your daughters whom the Lord your God has given you, in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you. 54 The [o]sensitive and very refined man among you (BH)will[p] be hostile toward his brother, toward (BI)the wife of his bosom, and toward the rest of his children whom he leaves behind, 55 so that he will not give any of them the flesh of his children whom he will eat, because he has nothing left in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you at all your gates. 56 The [q]tender and [r]delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her delicateness and sensitivity, [s]will refuse to the husband of her bosom, and to her son and her daughter, 57 her [t]placenta which comes out (BJ)from between her feet and her children whom she bears; for she will eat them secretly for lack of everything in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you at all your gates.

58 “If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear (BK)this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, 59 then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants (BL)extraordinary plagues—great and prolonged plagues—and serious and prolonged sicknesses. 60 Moreover He will bring back on you all (BM)the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed. 62 You (BN)shall be left few in number, whereas you were (BO)as the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God. 63 And it shall be, that just as the Lord (BP)rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the Lord (BQ)will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; and you shall be (BR)plucked[u] from off the land which you go to possess.

64 “Then the Lord (BS)will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and (BT)there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known—wood and stone. 65 And (BU)among those nations you shall find no rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting place; (BV)but there the Lord will give you a [v]trembling heart, failing eyes, and (BW)anguish of soul. 66 Your life shall hang in doubt before you; you shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of life. 67 (BX)In the morning you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were evening!’ And at evening you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were morning!’ because of the fear which terrifies your heart, and (BY)because of the sight which your eyes see.

68 “And the Lord (BZ)will take you back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said to you, (CA)‘You shall never see it again.’ And there you shall be offered for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”
