24 »Si un hombre toma una mujer y se casa con ella, pero después resulta que no le gusta por haber encontrado en ella algo indecente, le dará por escrito un certificado de divorcio y la despedirá de su casa. 2 Ella, después que haya abandonado la casa, podrá casarse con otro; 3 pero si su segundo marido también llega a despreciarla y le entrega un certificado de divorcio, despidiéndola de su casa, o si este segundo marido se muere, 4 entonces el que fue su primer marido no podrá volver a casarse con ella debido al estado de impureza en que ella se encuentra; esto sería un acto repugnante para el Señor, y ustedes no deben deshonrar el país que el Señor su Dios les da en propiedad.

5 »Si un hombre está recién casado, no deberá ir a la guerra ni se le hará cumplir ninguna otra clase de servicio durante un año; así podrá estar libre en su casa todo ese tiempo, para felicidad de su mujer.

6 »No pidan a nadie en prenda su molino de mano o la piedra de moler, pues eso sería como pedirle en prenda su propia vida.

7 »Si un israelita es sorprendido raptando a un compatriota para convertirlo en esclavo o para venderlo, se le condenará a muerte, para acabar así con la maldad que haya en medio de ustedes.

8 »En caso de lepra, cumplan fielmente todas las instrucciones que les den los sacerdotes levitas. Deben hacerlo todo tal y como yo se lo he ordenado a ellos. 9 Recuerden lo que hizo el Señor su Dios con María en el camino, después que ustedes salieron de Egipto.

10 »Si hacen un préstamo a su prójimo, no entren en su casa para tomar ninguna prenda suya. 11 Quédense afuera, y esperen a que él saque lo que va a dar en prenda. 12 Y si se trata de una persona pobre, no deben retener la prenda durante la noche; 13 tienen que devolvérsela a la puesta del sol, para que así pueda taparse con su manto cuando se vaya a dormir. Así él los bendecirá y ustedes harán una buena acción delante del Señor su Dios.

14 »No exploten al que se halle en la miseria, ni le retengan su paga, ya sea que se trate de un compatriota de ustedes o de un extranjero que habite en alguna de sus ciudades. 15 Páguenle su jornal el mismo día, antes de ponerse el sol, porque es pobre y necesita ese dinero para poder vivir. De otra manera clamará contra ustedes al Señor, y ustedes serán culpables de pecado.

16 »Los padres no podrán ser condenados a muerte por culpa de lo que hayan hecho sus hijos, ni los hijos por lo que hayan hecho sus padres, sino que cada uno morirá por su propio pecado.

17 »No cometan ninguna injusticia con los extranjeros ni con los huérfanos, ni tampoco tomen en prenda la ropa de las viudas. 18 No olviden que ustedes fueron esclavos en Egipto, y que el Señor su Dios los sacó de allí; por eso les ordeno que cumplan todo esto.

19 »Si al estar recogiendo la cosecha de su campo se olvidan ustedes de recoger un manojo de trigo, no regresen a buscarlo; déjenlo para que lo recoja algún extranjero de los que viven entre ustedes, o algún huérfano, o alguna viuda, a fin de que el Señor su Dios los bendiga a ustedes en todo lo que hagan.

20 »Cuando recojan las aceitunas de sus olivos, no repasen cada una de las ramas; las aceitunas que se queden, déjenlas para los extranjeros, los huérfanos y las viudas.

21 »Al recoger las uvas de su viñedo, no repasen ustedes cada una de las plantas; lo que quede, déjenlo para los extranjeros, los huérfanos y las viudas. 22 Recuerden que también ustedes fueron esclavos en Egipto; por eso les ordeno que cumplan todo esto.

24 Acerca del divorcio, Moisés dijo:

«Si un hombre se casa, y más tarde encuentra en su esposa algo indecente, podrá divorciarse de ella. Para hacerlo, deberá entregarle una carta de divorcio y la despedirá de su casa.

2 »Si esa mujer se casa después con otro hombre, 3 y el nuevo esposo también se divorcia de ella, o se muere, 4 el primer esposo no podrá volver a casarse con ella. No podrá hacerlo porque la mujer ya tuvo relaciones sexuales con otro hombre. Si llegaran a casarse de nuevo, Dios se enojaría. No debemos contaminar con el pecado la tierra que Dios nos ha dado».

5 Moisés también dijo:

«Ningún hombre estará obligado a ir a la guerra o a prestar servicio alguno, si se acaba de casar. Al contrario, durante todo el primer año de su matrimonio tendrá derecho a quedarse en su casa, para disfrutarlo felizmente con su esposa.

6 »Si alguien les pide prestado algo, no le pidan su molino para garantizar el pago. Si lo hacen, esa persona no tendrá con qué moler la harina para el pan, y podría pasar hambre.

7 »Cualquiera que se robe a otra persona para venderla o convertirla en esclava, será condenado a muerte. No permitan que en su país se cometa esa maldad.

8 »Si alguno de ustedes llega a tener una infección en la piel, deberá presentarse ante los sacerdotes. Ellos saben lo que debe hacerse en estos casos, así que ustedes deben seguir sus instrucciones. 9 Acuérdense de cómo se enfermó mi hermana María cuando veníamos de Egipto.

10-11 »Cuando presten dinero a alguien, no entren en su casa para tomar ustedes mismos la garantía de pago. Quédense a la puerta, y esperen a que esa persona les entregue la garantía.

12-13 »Si la persona a quien le prestan es pobre, y lo único que puede dar como garantía es su capa, acéptenla pero no se queden con ella toda la noche. Entréguenla a su dueño al anochecer, para que al dormir tenga con qué cubrirse. Así el dueño les estará agradecido, y pedirá a Dios que les dé su bendición. Y Dios verá que ustedes son buenos, y los bendecirá.

14-15 »Si le dan trabajo a una persona pobre, al terminar el día páguenle lo que sea justo. La gente pobre, sea israelita o extranjera, trabaja para poder comer, así que necesita ese dinero. Sigan estas instrucciones, pues si no lo hacen, esa gente se quejará ante Dios, y él los castigará a ustedes.

16 »Nadie debe ser castigado por un crimen que no haya cometido. Ni los padres deben morir por los crímenes de sus hijos, ni los hijos deben morir por los crímenes de sus padres.

17 »No maltraten a los refugiados ni a los huérfanos.

»Si le prestan algo a una viuda, no le pidan la ropa como garantía de pago.

18 »Jamás olviden que también ustedes fueron esclavos en Egipto, y que su Dios los rescató. Por eso les ordeno seguir estas instrucciones.

19-22 »Si al recoger la cosecha dejan olvidado en el campo algún manojo, no regresen por él. Déjenlo allí para los pobres, los refugiados, los huérfanos y las viudas. Y cuando corten sus aceitunas y cosechen sus uvas, harán lo mismo: no las cortarán todas, sino que dejarán algunas para ellos. Jamás olviden que también ustedes fueron esclavos en Egipto; por eso les ordeno que sigan todas estas instrucciones. Si lo hacen, Dios los bendecirá en todo lo que hagan.

24 “When[a] a man takes a wife and he marries her and then[b] she does not please him,[c] because he found something objectionable[d] and writes her a letter of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her away from his house, 2 and she goes from his house, and she goes out and becomes a wife for another man,[e] 3 and then the second man dislikes her and he writes her a letter of divorce and places it into her hand and sends her from his house, or if the second man dies who took her to himself[f] as a wife, 4 her first husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again[g] to become a wife to him after she has been defiled,[h] for that is a detestable thing before[i] Yahweh, and so you shall not mislead into sin the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance.

5 “When[j] a man takes a new wife he shall not go out with the army, and he shall not be obligated with anything;[k] he shall be free from obligation, to stay at home[l] for one year, and he shall bring joy to his wife that he took.

6 “A person[m] shall not take[n] a pair of millstones or an upper millstone, for he is taking necessities of life as a pledge.[o]

7 “If a man is caught[p] kidnapping somebody from among his countrymen,[q] the Israelites,[r] and he treats him as a slave or he sells him, then that kidnapper shall die, and so you shall purge the evil from among you.[s]

8 Be watchful[t] with respect to[u] an outbreak of any infectious skin disease, by being very careful and by acting[v] according to all that the priests and the Levites have instructed you, just as I have commanded them, so you shall diligently observe.[w] 9 So remember what Yahweh your God did to Miriam on the journey when you went out from Egypt.[x]

10 “When you make a loan to your neighbor, a loan of any kind, you shall not go into his house to take his pledge.[y] 11 You shall wait outside, and the man to whom you are lending, he shall bring the pledge outside to you. 12 And if he is a needy man, you shall not sleep in his pledge.[z] 13 You shall certainly return the pledge to him as the sun sets,[aa] so that he may sleep in his cloak and may bless you, and it shall be considered righteousness on your behalf[ab] before[ac] Yahweh your God.

14 “You shall not exploit a hired worker, who is needy and poor, from among your fellow men or from among your aliens[ad] who are in your land and in your towns.[ae] 15 On his day you shall give his wage, and the sun shall not go down,[af] because he is poor and his life depends on it;[ag] do this so that he does not cry out against you to Yahweh, and you incur guilt.[ah]

16 “Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, and children shall not be put to death because of their fathers; each one shall be put to death for his own sin. 17 You shall not subvert the rights of an alien or an orphan, and you shall not take as pledge the garment of a widow. 18 And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and that Yahweh your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this commandment.

19 “When[ai] you reap your harvest in your field and you forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not return to get it, for it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat off the fruit of your olive trees you shall not search through the branches afterward, for it[aj] shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow.

21 When you harvest grapes, you shall not glean your vineyards again;[ak] it[al] shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. 22 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.”

24 If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him(A) because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce,(B) gives it to her and sends her from his house, 2 and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, 3 and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, 4 then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord(C) your God is giving you as an inheritance.

5 If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.(D)

6 Do not take a pair of millstones—not even the upper one—as security for a debt, because that would be taking a person’s livelihood as security.(E)

7 If someone is caught kidnapping a fellow Israelite and treating or selling them as a slave, the kidnapper must die.(F) You must purge the evil from among you.(G)

8 In cases of defiling skin diseases,[a] be very careful to do exactly as the Levitical(H) priests instruct you. You must follow carefully what I have commanded them.(I) 9 Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Egypt.(J)

10 When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not go into their house to get what is offered to you as a pledge.(K) 11 Stay outside and let the neighbor to whom you are making the loan bring the pledge out to you. 12 If the neighbor is poor, do not go to sleep with their pledge(L) in your possession. 13 Return their cloak by sunset(M) so that your neighbor may sleep in it.(N) Then they will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the Lord your God.(O)

14 Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.(P) 15 Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor(Q) and are counting on it.(R) Otherwise they may cry to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin.(S)

16 Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.(T)

17 Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless(U) of justice,(V) or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge. 18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt(W) and the Lord your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.

19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it.(X) Leave it for the foreigner,(Y) the fatherless and the widow,(Z) so that the Lord your God may bless(AA) you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time.(AB) Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.(AC)
