Atonement for an Unsolved Murder
21 If someone is found slain, lying in a field in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who the killer was,(A) 2 your elders and judges shall go out and measure the distance from the body to the neighboring towns. 3 Then the elders of the town nearest the body shall take a heifer that has never been worked and has never worn a yoke(B) 4 and lead it down to a valley that has not been plowed or planted and where there is a flowing stream. There in the valley they are to break the heifer’s neck. 5 The Levitical priests shall step forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister and to pronounce blessings(C) in the name of the Lord and to decide all cases of dispute and assault.(D) 6 Then all the elders of the town nearest the body shall wash their hands(E) over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, 7 and they shall declare: “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done. 8 Accept this atonement for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, Lord, and do not hold your people guilty of the blood of an innocent person.” Then the bloodshed will be atoned for,(F) 9 and you will have purged(G) from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the Lord.
Marrying a Captive Woman
10 When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands(H) and you take captives,(I) 11 if you notice among the captives a beautiful(J) woman and are attracted to her,(K) you may take her as your wife. 12 Bring her into your home and have her shave her head,(L) trim her nails 13 and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month,(M) then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. 14 If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.(N)
The Right of the Firstborn
15 If a man has two wives,(O) and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,(P) 16 when he wills his property to his sons, he must not give the rights of the firstborn to the son of the wife he loves in preference to his actual firstborn, the son of the wife he does not love.(Q) 17 He must acknowledge the son of his unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double(R) share of all he has. That son is the first sign of his father’s strength.(S) The right of the firstborn belongs to him.(T)
A Rebellious Son
18 If someone has a stubborn and rebellious(U) son(V) who does not obey his father and mother(W) and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death.(X) You must purge the evil(Y) from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.(Z)
Various Laws
22 If someone guilty of a capital offense(AA) is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, 23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.(AB) Be sure to bury(AC) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.(AD) You must not desecrate(AE) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

21 »Si en la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te da en posesión se halla alguien muerto y tendido en el campo, y no se sabe quién lo mató, 2 entonces tus ancianos y tus jueces saldrán y medirán la distancia hasta las ciudades más cercanas al muerto. 3 Los ancianos de la ciudad más cercana al muerto tomarán del ganado una becerra a la que no se haya hecho trabajar ni se le haya puesto yugo, 4 y esos mismos ancianos llevarán la becerra a un valle escabroso, que nunca haya sido arado ni sembrado, y allí en el valle le romperán el cuello a la becerra. 5 Se acercarán entonces los sacerdotes hijos de Leví, que son los escogidos por el Señor tu Dios para servirle y para bendecir en su nombre, y el veredicto de ellos pondrá fin a toda disputa y toda ofensa. 6 Luego, todos los ancianos de esa ciudad más cercana al muerto se lavarán las manos sobre la becerra a la que se rompió el cuello en el valle, 7 y harán constar: “Nosotros nada tuvimos que ver con esta muerte, ni tampoco vimos lo que sucedió. 8 Señor, perdona a tu pueblo Israel, al cual redimiste, y no lo culpes de derramar sangre inocente.” Así esta muerte les será perdonada 9 y, si haces lo recto a los ojos del Señor, no cargarás con la culpa de que un inocente haya sido muerto en tu medio.

10 »Cuando salgas a combatir a tus enemigos, y el Señor tu Dios los ponga en tus manos y tomes prisioneros, 11 si ves entre los cautivos una mujer hermosa y, atraído por ella, la tomas por mujer, 12 deberás llevarla a tu casa y hacer que ella se rape la cabeza y se corte las uñas; 13 se quitará entonces el vestido de prisionera y se quedará en tu casa, y un mes entero llorará por su padre y por su madre; después de eso podrás allegarte a ella, y tú serás su marido y ella será tu mujer. 14 Pero si no te agrada, no podrás venderla a cambio de dinero ni tratarla como esclava. Tendrás que dejarla en libertad, puesto que la has humillado.
15 »Si un hombre tiene dos mujeres, y a una de ellas la ama pero a la otra la aborrece, si las dos le dan hijos pero el primogénito es de la aborrecida, 16 cuando llegue el día de repartir su herencia no podrá otorgar al hijo de la esposa amada el derecho de primogenitura, en perjuicio del hijo de la esposa aborrecida, que es realmente el primogénito, 17 sino que reconocerá como primogénito al hijo de la aborrecida y le dará doble porción de la herencia que le corresponde a cada uno de sus hijos. Porque ese hijo fue el primero que tuvo, y a él le corresponde el derecho de primogenitura.
18 »Si alguien tiene un hijo testarudo y rebelde, que no atiende a la voz de su padre ni a la de su madre, y que no los obedece a pesar de que lo castigan, 19 entonces su padre y su madre lo llevarán ante los ancianos, a la entrada de la ciudad donde viva, 20 y dirán a los ancianos de la ciudad: “Este hijo nuestro es testarudo y rebelde; no atiende a lo que le decimos, y además es glotón y borracho.” 21 Entonces todos los hombres de la ciudad lo apedrearán, y así morirá, para que quites de en medio de ti el mal, y todo Israel lo sabrá y temerá.
22 »Si alguien comete un crimen que merezca la muerte, y lo haces morir y lo cuelgas de un árbol, 23 no dejen que su cuerpo se quede en ese árbol toda la noche. Lo enterrarás ese mismo día, porque quien es colgado(A) de un árbol está bajo la maldición de Dios. No contamines la tierra que el Señor tu Dios te da en posesión.
