20 »Cuando salgas a la guerra contra tus enemigos, si ves caballos, carros y un pueblo más numeroso que tú, no les tengas temor, porque Jehová, tu Dios, el que te sacó de la tierra de Egipto, está contigo. 2 Y cuando os acerquéis para combatir, se pondrá en pie el sacerdote y hablará al pueblo. 3 Les dirá: “Oye, Israel, vosotros os juntáis hoy en batalla contra vuestros enemigos; no desmaye vuestro corazón, no temáis ni os azoréis ni tampoco os desalentéis delante de ellos, 4 porque Jehová, vuestro Dios, va con vosotros, para pelear por vosotros contra vuestros enemigos, para salvaros.” 5 Luego hablarán los oficiales al pueblo, y dirán: “¿Quién ha edificado una casa nueva y no la ha estrenado? Que se vaya y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla y algún otro la estrene. 6 ¿Y quién ha plantado una viña y no la ha disfrutado? Que se vaya y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla y algún otro la disfrute. 7 ¿Y quién se ha desposado con una mujer y no la ha tomado? Que se vaya y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla y algún otro la tome.”
8 »Después volverán los oficiales a hablar al pueblo y dirán: “¿Quién es hombre medroso y pusilánime? Que se vaya y vuelva a su casa, para que no apoque el corazón de sus hermanos como ocurre con el corazón suyo.” 9 Y cuando los oficiales acaben de hablar al pueblo, entonces los capitanes del ejército tomarán el mando a la cabeza del pueblo.
10 »Cuando te acerques a una ciudad para combatirla, le propondrás la paz. 11 Y si responde: “Paz”, y te abre sus puertas, todo el pueblo que en ella se encuentre te será tributario y te servirá. 12 Pero si no hace la paz contigo, sino que emprende la guerra contra ti, entonces la sitiarás. 13 Luego que Jehová, tu Dios, la entregue en tus manos, herirás a todos sus hombres a filo de espada. 14 Solamente las mujeres y los niños, los animales y todo lo que haya en la ciudad, todo su botín, lo tomarás para ti, y comerás del botín de tus enemigos, los cuales Jehová, tu Dios, te entregó. 15 Así harás con todas las ciudades que estén muy lejos de ti y no pertenezcan a estas naciones. 16 Pero en las ciudades de estos pueblos que Jehová, tu Dios, te da por heredad, ninguna persona dejarás con vida, 17 sino que destruirás completamente al heteo, al amorreo, al cananeo, al ferezeo, al heveo y al jebuseo, como Jehová, tu Dios, te ha mandado, 18 para que no os enseñen a imitar todas esas abominaciones que ellos han hecho en honor de sus dioses, y pequéis contra Jehová, vuestro Dios.
19 »Cuando sities alguna ciudad y pelees contra ella muchos días para tomarla, no destruirás sus árboles a golpe de hacha, porque de ellos podrás comer. No los talarás, pues el árbol del campo no es hombre que venga contra ti en el sitio. 20 Pero el árbol que sepas que no lleva fruto, podrás destruirlo y talarlo para construir baluartes contra la ciudad que te hace la guerra, hasta sojuzgarla.

20 When you go forth to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
2 And when you come near to the battle, the priest shall approach and speak to the men,
3 And shall say to them, Hear, O Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies. Let not your [minds and] hearts faint; fear not, and do not tremble or be terrified [and in dread] because of them.
4 For the Lord your God is He Who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to save you.(A)
5 And the officers shall speak to the people, saying, What man is there who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it.
6 And what man has planted a vineyard and has not used the fruit of it? Let him also return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man use the fruit of it.
7 And what man has betrothed a wife and has not taken her? Let him return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.
8 And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, What man is fearful and fainthearted? Let him return to his house, lest [because of him] his brethren’s [minds and] hearts faint as does his own.
9 And when the officers finish speaking to the people, they shall appoint commanders at the head of the people.
10 When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.
11 And if that city makes an answer of peace to you and opens to you, then all the people found in it shall be tributary to you and they shall serve you.
12 But if it refuses to make peace with you and fights against you, then you shall besiege it.
13 And when the Lord your God has given it into your hands, you shall smite every male there with the edge of the sword.
14 But the women, the little ones, the beasts, and all that is in the city, all the spoil in it, you shall take for yourselves; and you shall use the spoil of your enemies which the Lord your God has given you.
15 So shall you treat all the cities that are very far off from you, that do not belong to the cities of these nations.
16 But in the cities of these people which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes.
17 But you shall utterly exterminate them, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded you,
18 So that they may not teach you all the abominable practices they have carried on for their gods, and so cause you to sin against the Lord your God.
19 When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by using an ax on them, for you can eat their fruit; you must not cut them down, for is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you?
20 Only the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siege works against the city that makes war with you until it falls.

20 Khi anh chị em giao chiến với quân thù và thấy họ có nhiều ngựa, nhiều xe và có đạo quân đông hơn mình thì đừng sợ, vì CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của anh chị em là Đấng đã đem anh chị em ra khỏi Ai-cập sẽ ở với anh chị em. 2 Khi sắp tham chiến, thầy tế lễ sẽ tiến lên phía trước để kêu gọi binh sĩ. 3 Ông ấy sẽ nói: “Anh em binh sĩ Y-sơ-ra-ên nghe đây! Hôm nay chúng ta sẽ ra trận chiến đấu với quân thù. Anh em đừng nhát gan cũng đừng sợ hãi. Khi đối diện với quân thù, anh em đừng hoang mang khiếp sợ, 4 vì CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của anh em sẽ đi với anh em, tiến đánh quân thù thay anh em và cho anh em chiến thắng.”
5 Các sĩ quan sẽ nói với binh sĩ: “Có ai vừa mới cất nhà nhưng chưa khánh thành? Người ấy được trở về, vì có thể người ấy tử trận và người khác sẽ khánh thành nhà ấy. 6 Có ai trồng một vườn nho nhưng chưa kịp hưởng hoa lợi? Người ấy được trở về, vì có thể người ấy tử trận, và người khác hưởng hoa lợi vườn nho đó. 7 Có ai hứa hôn với một phụ nữ nhưng chưa kịp cưới? Người ấy được trở về, vì có thể người ấy tử trận và người khác cưới vợ hứa của mình.” 8 Họ nói tiếp với binh sĩ: “Ai nhát gan sợ hãi cũng về đi, để các bạn đồng ngũ khỏi bị sợ lây.” 9 Sau khi các sĩ quan nói với quân sĩ xong, các cấp chỉ huy sẽ được bổ nhiệm để lãnh đạo toàn quân.
10 Khi kéo quân tấn công một thành nào, anh chị em phải nghị hòa với thành ấy. 11 Nếu họ chấp thuận và mở cửa thành, tất cả dân chúng trong thành sẽ làm nô lệ phục dịch anh em. 12 Nhưng nếu họ bác bỏ điều kiện nghị hòa của anh chị em và khai chiến với anh chị em, lúc đó anh chị em sẽ vây thành. 13 Khi CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của anh chị em trao thành vào tay anh chị em, phải dùng gươm giết hết đàn ông trong thành. 14 Nhưng anh em có thể chiếm hữu đàn bà, trẻ con, gia súc và mọi thứ khác làm chiến lợi phẩm, và anh em có thể xử dụng chiến lợi phẩm được CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của anh chị em ban cho. 15 Anh em xử như vậy với tất cả các thành ở rất xa anh em, không phải những thành của các dân tộc này ở đây.
16 Tuy nhiên, phải tiêu diệt hết mọi sinh vật có hơi thở sống trong các thành thuộc lãnh thổ các dân tộc CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của anh chị em ban cho làm cơ nghiệp. 17 Phải tận diệt các dân Hê-tít, A-mô-rít, Ca-na-an, Phê-rê-sít, Hê-vít và Giê-bu-sít, đúng theo mạng lệnh CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của anh chị em đã truyền. 18 Nếu không, họ sẽ hướng dẫn anh chị em làm những điều ghê tởm họ làm khi họ thờ lạy thần tượng của họ và anh chị em sẽ phạm tội với CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của chúng ta.
19 Khi bao vây một thành nào lâu ngày và tìm cách chiếm nó, anh chị em đừng dùng rìu triệt hạ cây cối, vì anh chị em có thể ăn trái các cây đó. Đừng đốn cây cối, vì các cây này mọc ngoài đồng đâu phải là người để anh chị em bao vây? 20 Tuy nhiên, anh chị em có thể đốn cây nào mình biết rõ là cây không sinh trái để dùng làm công sự vây hãm thành cho đến khi nào chiếm được thành.
