Moisés nomeia Josué seu sucessor
31 Depois, foi Moisés, e falou estas palavras a todo o Israel, 2 e disse-lhes: Da idade de cento e vinte anos sou eu hoje; já não poderei mais sair e entrar; além disso, o Senhor me disse: Não passarás o Jordão. 3 O Senhor, teu Deus, passará adiante de ti; ele destruirá estas nações diante de ti, para que as possuas; Josué passará adiante de ti, como o Senhor tem dito. 4 E o Senhor lhes fará como fez a Seom, e a Ogue, reis dos amorreus, e à sua terra, os quais destruiu. 5 Quando, pois, o Senhor vo-los der diante de vós, então, com eles fareis conforme todo o mandamento que vos tenho ordenado.
6 Esforçai-vos, e animai-vos; não temais, nem vos espanteis diante deles, porque o Senhor, vosso Deus, é o que vai convosco; não vos deixará nem vos desamparará. 7 E chamou Moisés a Josué e lhe disse aos olhos de todo o Israel: Esforça-te e anima-te, porque com este povo entrarás na terra que o Senhor jurou a teus pais lhes dar; e tu os farás herdá-la. 8 O Senhor, pois, é aquele que vai adiante de ti; ele será contigo, não te deixará, nem te desamparará; não temas, nem te espantes.
A lei deve ser lida ao povo de sete em sete anos
9 E Moisés escreveu esta Lei, e a deu aos sacerdotes, filhos de Levi, que levavam a arca do concerto do Senhor, e a todos os anciãos de Israel. 10 E deu-lhes ordem Moisés, dizendo: Ao fim de cada sete anos, no tempo determinado do ano da remissão, na Festa dos Tabernáculos, 11 quando todo o Israel vier a comparecer perante o Senhor, teu Deus, no lugar que ele escolher, lerás esta Lei diante de todo o Israel aos seus ouvidos. 12 Ajunta o povo, homens, e mulheres, e meninos, e os teus estrangeiros que estão dentro das tuas portas, para que ouçam, e aprendam, e temam ao Senhor, vosso Deus, e tenham cuidado de fazer todas as palavras desta Lei; 13 e que seus filhos que a não souberem ouçam e aprendam a temer ao Senhor, vosso Deus, todos os dias que viverdes sobre a terra, a que ides, passando o Jordão, para possuí-la.
Deus dá a Josué o encargo do povo
14 E disse o Senhor a Moisés: Eis que os teus dias são chegados, para que morras; chama a Josué, e ponde-vos na tenda da congregação, para que eu lhe dê ordem. Assim, foi Moisés e Josué, e se puseram na tenda da congregação. 15 Então, o Senhor apareceu na tenda, na coluna de nuvem; e a coluna de nuvem estava sobre a porta da tenda.
16 E disse o Senhor a Moisés: Eis que dormirás com teus pais; e este povo se levantará, e se prostituirá, indo após os deuses dos estranhos da terra para o meio dos quais vai, e me deixará, e anulará o meu concerto que tenho feito com ele. 17 Assim, se acenderá a minha ira, naquele dia, contra ele, e desampará-lo-ei, e esconderei o meu rosto dele, para que seja devorado; e tantos males e angústias o alcançarão, que dirá, naquele dia: Não me alcançaram estes males por não estar o meu Deus no meio de mim? 18 Esconderei, pois, totalmente o meu rosto, naquele dia, por todo o mal que tiver feito, por se haver tornado a outros deuses. 19 Agora, pois, escrevei-vos este cântico e ensinai-o aos filhos de Israel; ponde-o na sua boca, para que este cântico me seja por testemunha contra os filhos de Israel. 20 Porque os meterei na terra que jurei a seus pais, a qual mana leite e mel; e comerão, e se fartarão, e se engordarão; então, se tornarão a outros deuses, e os servirão, e me irritarão, e anularão o meu concerto. 21 E será que, quando os alcançarem muitos males e angústias, então, este cântico responderá contra eles por testemunha, pois não será esquecido da boca de sua semente; porquanto conheço a sua imaginação, o que eles fazem hoje, antes que os meta na terra que tenho jurado. 22 Assim, Moisés escreveu este cântico naquele dia e o ensinou aos filhos de Israel.
23 E ordenou a Josué, filho de Num, e disse: Esforça-te e anima-te, porque tu meterás os filhos de Israel na terra que lhes jurei; e eu serei contigo.
24 E aconteceu que, acabando Moisés de escrever as palavras desta Lei num livro, até de todo as acabar, 25 deu ordem Moisés aos levitas que levavam a arca do concerto do Senhor, dizendo: 26 Tomai este livro da Lei e ponde-o ao lado da arca do concerto do Senhor, vosso Deus, para que ali esteja por testemunha contra ti. 27 Porque conheço a tua rebelião e a tua dura cerviz; eis que, vivendo eu ainda hoje convosco, rebeldes fostes contra o Senhor; e quanto mais depois da minha morte. 28 Ajuntai perante mim todos os anciãos das vossas tribos e vossos oficiais, e aos vossos ouvidos falarei estas palavras e contra eles por testemunhas tomarei os céus e a terra. 29 Porque eu sei que, depois da minha morte, certamente vos corrompereis e vos desviareis do caminho que vos ordenei; então, este mal vos alcançará nos últimos dias, quando fizerdes mal aos olhos do Senhor, para o provocar à ira com a obra das vossas mãos.
30 Então, Moisés falou as palavras deste cântico aos ouvidos de toda a congregação de Israel, até se acabarem:

Josué se torna o líder de Israel
31 Quando Moisés havia terminado de dar estas instruções[a] a todo o povo de Israel, 2 ele disse: “Estou com 120 anos e já não sou capaz de conduzi-los. O Senhor me disse: ‘Você não atravessará o rio Jordão’. 3 Mas o próprio Senhor, seu Deus, atravessará adiante de vocês. Ele destruirá as nações que vivem ali, e vocês tomarão posse da terra. Josué os conduzirá até o outro lado do rio, conforme o Senhor prometeu.
4 “O Senhor destruirá as nações que vivem na terra, como destruiu Seom e Ogue, os reis dos amorreus. 5 O Senhor lhes entregará os povos que vivem ali, e vocês farão com eles o que eu lhes ordenei. 6 Portanto, sejam fortes e corajosos! Não tenham medo e não se apavorem diante deles. O Senhor, seu Deus, irá adiante de vocês. Ele não os deixará nem os abandonará”.
7 Então, enquanto todo o Israel observava, Moisés mandou chamar Josué e lhe disse: “Seja forte e corajoso, pois você conduzirá este povo à terra que o Senhor jurou a seus antepassados que lhes daria. Você a dividirá entre eles e a entregará como herança. 8 Não tenha medo nem desanime, pois o próprio Senhor irá adiante de vocês. Ele estará com vocês; não os deixará nem os abandonará”.
Leitura pública do Livro da Lei
9 Moisés escreveu toda esta lei num livro e o entregou aos sacerdotes que transportavam a arca da aliança do Senhor e às autoridades de Israel. 10 Depois, Moisés lhes deu a seguinte ordem: “Ao final de cada sete anos, no ano do cancelamento das dívidas, durante a Festa das Cabanas, 11 leiam este Livro da Lei para todo o povo de Israel, quando estiverem reunidos diante do Senhor, seu Deus, no lugar que ele escolher. 12 Convoquem todos: homens, mulheres, crianças e os estrangeiros que vivem em suas cidades, para que ouçam este Livro da Lei e aprendam a temer o Senhor, seu Deus, e a obedecer fielmente a todos os termos desta lei. 13 Façam isso para que seus filhos, que não conhecem estas instruções, as ouçam e aprendam a temer o Senhor, seu Deus. Façam isso enquanto viverem na terra da qual tomarão posse ao atravessar o Jordão”.
Predição da desobediência de Israel
14 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés: “É chegada a hora de você morrer. Chame Josué e apresentem-se na tenda do encontro, onde darei minhas ordens a ele”. Moisés e Josué foram e se apresentaram na tenda do encontro. 15 O Senhor lhes apareceu numa coluna de nuvem, que parou à entrada da tenda sagrada.
16 O Senhor disse a Moisés: “Você está prestes a morrer e a se reunir a seus antepassados. Quando não estiver mais aqui, este povo começará a se prostituir, adorando deuses estrangeiros, os deuses da terra para onde se dirigem. Eles me abandonarão e quebrarão a aliança que fiz com eles. 17 Então minha ira arderá contra eles. Eu os abandonarei, esconderei deles minha face, e eles serão devorados. Aflições terríveis os atingirão e, naquele dia, dirão: ‘Estas calamidades nos atingiram porque o Senhor não está mais entre nós!’. 18 Naquele dia, esconderei deles minha face por causa de todo o mal que praticaram, adorando outros deuses.
19 “Escrevam, portanto, as palavras desta canção e ensinem-na aos israelitas. Ajudem o povo a aprendê-la, para que ela sirva de testemunha a meu favor e contra eles. 20 Pois eu os farei entrar na terra que jurei dar a seus antepassados, uma terra que produz leite e mel com fartura. Lá, eles se tornarão prósperos, comerão à vontade e engordarão. Contudo, começarão a adorar outros deuses; eles me desprezarão e quebrarão a minha aliança. 21 E, quando grandes calamidades lhes ocorrerem, esta canção servirá de prova contra eles, pois seus descendentes jamais se esquecerão dela. Eu conheço as intenções deles, mesmo antes de entrarem na terra que jurei lhes dar”.
22 Assim, naquele mesmo dia, Moisés escreveu as palavras da canção e a ensinou aos israelitas.
23 Então o Senhor deu ordens a Josué, filho de Num, com as seguintes palavras: “Seja forte e corajoso, pois você conduzirá o povo de Israel à terra que jurei lhes dar. Eu estarei com você”.
24 Quando Moisés terminou de escrever os termos desta lei num livro, 25 deu a seguinte ordem aos levitas que transportavam a arca da aliança do Senhor: 26 “Peguem este Livro da Lei e coloquem-no ao lado da arca da aliança do Senhor, seu Deus, para que ele fique ali como testemunha contra vocês. 27 Pois eu sei como são rebeldes e teimosos. Se, mesmo agora, enquanto ainda estou vivo e em seu meio, vocês se rebelaram, quanto mais rebeldes serão depois da minha morte!
28 “Convoquem agora todas as autoridades e os oficiais de suas tribos para que eu lhes fale diretamente e chame os céus e a terra para testemunharem contra eles. 29 Sei que depois de minha morte vocês se tornarão inteiramente corruptos e se afastarão do caminho que lhes ordenei que seguissem. Nos dias futuros, a calamidade cairá sobre vocês, pois farão o que é mau aos olhos do Senhor e provocarão a ira dele contra seus atos”.

Joshua Becomes Israel’s Leader to Replace Moses
31 Moses continued to speak to all the Israelites:
2 “I’m 120 years old now, and I’m not able to lead you anymore. Besides, Yahweh has told me that I cannot cross the Jordan River. 3 Yahweh your Elohim is the one who will cross the river ahead of you. He will destroy those nations as you arrive, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua will also cross the river ahead of you, as Yahweh told you. 4 Yahweh will do to those nations what he did to King Sihon and King Og of the Amorites and to their lands when he destroyed them. 5 Yahweh will hand them over to you, and you must do to them everything that I commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous. Don’t tremble! Don’t be afraid of them! Yahweh your Elohim is the one who is going with you. He won’t abandon you or leave you.”
7 Then Moses called for Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous. You will go with these people into the land that Yahweh will give them, as he swore to their ancestors. You will help them take possession of the land.[a] 8 Yahweh is the one who is going ahead of you. He will be with you. He won’t abandon you or leave you. So don’t be afraid or terrified.”
9 Moses wrote down these teachings and gave them to the Levitical priests who carried the ark of Yahweh’s promise and to all the leaders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seventh year you must cancel debts. At that time, during the Festival of Booths, 11 all the Israelites will come into the presence of Yahweh your Elohim at the place he will choose. Read these teachings so that they can hear them. 12 Assemble the men, women, and children, as well as the foreigners who live in your cities. Have them listen and learn to fear Yahweh your Elohim and faithfully obey every word of these teachings. 13 Their children, who don’t know these teachings, must hear them and learn to fear Yahweh your Elohim as long as you live in the land that you are going to take possession of when you cross the Jordan River.”
14 Yahweh said to Moses, “The time of your death is coming soon. Call for Joshua. Both of you come to the tent of meeting, and I will give him his instructions.” Moses and Joshua came to the tent of meeting. 15 Then Yahweh appeared in a column of smoke at the entrance to the tent.
16 Yahweh said to Moses, “Soon you are going to lie down in death with your ancestors. When these people enter the land and are living among the foreigners there, they will chase after foreign gods as though they were prostitutes. They will abandon me and reject the promise[b] I made to them. 17 On that day I will become angry with them. I will abandon them and turn away from them. They will be destroyed, and many terrible disasters will happen to them. On that day they will ask, ‘Haven’t these disasters happened to us because our Elohim isn’t with us?’ 18 On that day I will certainly turn away from them because of all the evil they’ve done in turning to other gods.
19 “Write down this song, teach it to the Israelites, and have them sing it. This song will be a witness for me against the Israelites. 20 I will bring them into the land that I swore to give to their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey. When they have eaten all they want and have become fat,[c] they will turn to other gods and worship them. They will despise me and reject my promise. 21 When many terrible disasters happen to them, this song will testify against them, because it will never be forgotten by their descendants. I know what their hearts are set on doing, even now before I bring them into the land that I swore to give them.” 22 That day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites.
23 Yahweh gave this command to Joshua, son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous, because you will bring the Israelites into the land that I swore to give them, and I will be with you.”
24 Finally, Moses finished writing all the words of these teachings in a book. 25 He gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of Yahweh’s promise: 26 “Take this Book of Teachings, and put it next to the ark of the promise of Yahweh your Elohim, where it will be a witness against you. 27 I know how rebellious you are. You are impossible to deal with. While I am alive and still with you, you are rebelling against Yahweh. How much more rebellious will you be after I die? 28 Assemble all the leaders of your tribes and your officers in front of me. As they listen, I will speak these words and call on heaven and earth to testify against them. 29 I know that after I die you will become thoroughly corrupt and turn from the way I have commanded you to live. In the days to come disasters will happen to you because you will make Yahweh furious by doing what he considers evil.”

30 Then, as the whole congregation of Israel listened, Moses recited all the words of this song:

Joshua to Succeed Moses
31 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: 2 “I am now a hundred and twenty years old(A) and I am no longer able to lead you.(B) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’(C) 3 The Lord your God himself will cross(D) over ahead of you.(E) He will destroy these nations(F) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross(G) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. 4 And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,(H) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. 5 The Lord will deliver(I) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous.(J) Do not be afraid or terrified(K) because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you;(L) he will never leave you(M) nor forsake(N) you.”
7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(O) to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(P) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(Q) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(R) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Public Reading of the Law
9 So Moses wrote(S) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(T) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(U) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(V) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(W) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(X) you shall read this law(Y) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(Z) to fear(AA) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(AB) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
Israel’s Rebellion Predicted
14 The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death(AC) is near. Call Joshua(AD) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(AE)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(AF)
15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(AG) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,(AH) and these people will soon prostitute(AI) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(AJ) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(AK) with them and forsake(AL) them; I will hide(AM) my face(AN) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(AO) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(AP) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.
19 “Now write(AQ) down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness(AR) for me against them. 20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors,(AS) and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods(AT) and worship them,(AU) rejecting me and breaking my covenant.(AV) 21 And when many disasters and calamities come on them,(AW) this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do,(AX) even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.” 22 So Moses wrote(AY) down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.
23 The Lord gave this command(AZ) to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous,(BA) for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”
24 After Moses finished writing(BB) in a book the words of this law(BC) from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried(BD) the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.(BE) 27 For I know how rebellious(BF) and stiff-necked(BG) you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.(BH) 29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt(BI) and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster(BJ) will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”

30 And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:
