2 N’oublie jamais tout le chemin que l’Eternel ton Dieu t’a fait parcourir pendant ces quarante ans dans le désert afin de te faire connaître la pauvreté pour t’éprouver. Il a agi ainsi pour découvrir tes véritables dispositions intérieures et savoir si tu allais, ou non, obéir à ses commandements. 3 Oui, il t’a fait connaître la pauvreté et la faim, et il t’a nourri avec cette manne[a] que tu ne connaissais pas et que tes ancêtres n’avaient pas connue. De cette manière, il voulait t’apprendre que l’homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais aussi de toute parole prononcée par l’Eternel[b]. 4 Le vêtement que tu portais ne s’est pas usé sur toi et tes pieds ne se sont pas enflés pendant ces quarante ans. 5 Ainsi, en y réfléchissant, tu reconnaîtras que l’Eternel ton Dieu fait ton éducation comme un père éduque son enfant.

2 And you shall remember that the Lord your God (A)led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and (B)test you, (C)to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3 So He humbled you, (D)allowed you to hunger, and (E)fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall (F)not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord. 4 (G)Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years. 5 (H)You should [a]know in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the Lord your God chastens you.

Deuteronomy 8:2-5

2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.
4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.
5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee.
