Deuteronomy 29-30

Renewing the Covenant
29 These are the words of the covenant(A) that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.(B) 2 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes(C) everything the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land. 3 You saw with your own eyes the great trials and those great signs and wonders.(D) 4 Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a mind to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.(E) 5 I led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes and the sandals on your feet did not wear out;(F) 6 you did not eat food or drink wine or beer—so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.(G) 7 When you reached this place, King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.(H) 8 We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.(I) 9 Therefore, observe the words of this covenant(J) and follow them, so that you will succeed in everything you do.(K)
10 “All of you are standing today before the Lord your God—your leaders, tribes, elders, officials, all the men of Israel, 11 your dependents, your wives, and the resident aliens in your camps who cut your wood and draw your water— 12 so that you may enter into the covenant of the Lord your God, which he is making with you today, so that you may enter into his oath 13 and so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.(L) 14 I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you, 15 but also with those who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God and with those who are not here today.
Abandoning the Covenant
16 “Indeed, you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and passed through the nations where you traveled. 17 You saw their abhorrent images and idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them.(M) 18 Be sure there is no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Be sure there is no root among you bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.(N) 19 When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt,[a] thinking, ‘I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.’ This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land. 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him. Instead, his anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and every curse written in this scroll will descend on him. The Lord will blot out his name under heaven,(O) 21 and single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.
22 “Future generations of your children who follow you and the foreigner who comes from a distant country will see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses the Lord has inflicted on it. 23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown, producing nothing, with no plant growing on it, just like the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord demolished in his fierce anger.(P) 24 All the nations will ask, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this intense outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, which he had made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 They began to serve other gods, bowing in worship to gods they had not known(Q)—gods that the Lord had not permitted them to worship.(R) 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, and he brought every curse written in this book on it. 28 The Lord uprooted them from their land in his anger, rage, and intense wrath, and threw them into another land where they are today.’ 29 The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.
Returning to the Lord
30 “When all these things happen to you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you come to your senses while you are in all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you,(S) 2 and you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and all your soul(T) by doing[b] everything I am commanding you today, 3 then he will restore your fortunes,[c](U) have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you.(V) 4 Even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon, he will gather you and bring you back from there.(W) 5 The Lord your God will bring you into the land your ancestors possessed, and you will take possession of it.(X) He will cause you to prosper and multiply you more than he did your ancestors.(Y) 6 The Lord your God will circumcise your heart(Z) and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live.(AA) 7 The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. 8 Then you will again obey him and follow all his commands I am commanding you today. 9 The Lord your God will make you prosper abundantly in all the work of your hands,(AB) your offspring,[d] the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the Lord will again delight in your prosperity, as he delighted in that of your ancestors, 10 when you obey the Lord your God by keeping his commands and statutes that are written in this book of the law and return to him with all your heart and all your soul.
Choose Life
11 “This command that I give you today is certainly not too difficult or beyond your reach. 12 It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 13 And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it?’ 14 But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.(AC) 15 See, today I have set before you life and prosperity, death and adversity.(AD) 16 For[e] I am commanding you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, so that you may live[f] and multiply, and the Lord your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen and you are led astray to bow in worship to other gods and serve them, 18 I tell you today that you will certainly perish and will not prolong your days in the land you are entering to possess across the Jordan. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life(AE) so that you and your descendants may live, 20 love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful[g] to him. For he is your life, and he will prolong your days as you live in the land the Lord swore to give to your ancestors(AF) Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Following Jesus
57 As they were traveling on the road someone said to him,(A) “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 Then he said to another, “Follow me.”
“Lord,” he said, “first let me go bury my father.”
60 But he told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.”(B)
61 Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.”(C)
62 But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Sending Out the Seventy-Two
10 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two[a] others, and he sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 He told them,(D) “The harvest(E) is abundant, but the workers(F) are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.(G) 3 Now go; I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves.(H) 4 Don’t carry a money-bag,(I) traveling bag,(J) or sandals; (K) don’t greet anyone along the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace(L) to this household.’ 6 If a person of peace is there, your peace(M) will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages.(N) Don’t move from house to house. 8 When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you.(O) 9 Heal the sick(P) who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(Q) has come near(R) you.’ 10 When you enter any town, and they don’t welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘We are wiping off even the dust of your town that clings to our feet as a witness against you.(S) Know this for certain: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, on that day(T) it will be more tolerable for Sodom(U) than for that town.(V)
Unrepentant Towns
13 “Woe(W) to you,(X) Chorazin!(Y) Woe to you, Bethsaida!(Z) For if the miracles(AA) that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,(AB) they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.(AC) 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment(AD) than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(AE) will you be exalted to heaven?(AF) No, you will go down to Hades.(AG) 16 Whoever listens to you listens to me.(AH) Whoever rejects you rejects me.(AI) And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”(AJ)
The Return of the Seventy-Two
17 The seventy-two[b](AK) returned with joy, saying,(AL) “Lord, even the demons(AM) submit to us in your name.”(AN)
18 He said to them, “I watched Satan(AO) fall from heaven like lightning.(AP) 19 Look, I have given you the authority(AQ) to trample(AR) on snakes(AS) and scorpions(AT) and over all the power of the enemy; (AU) nothing at all will harm you.(AV) 20 However, don’t rejoice that[c] the spirits (AW) submit to you,(AX) but rejoice that your names are written(AY) in heaven.”
The Son Reveals the Father
21 At that time(AZ) he[d] rejoiced in the Holy[e] Spirit(BA) and said, “I praise[f] you, Father,(BB) Lord of heaven and earth,(BC) because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent(BD) and revealed them to infants.(BE) Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.[g](BF) 22 All things have[h] been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires[i] to reveal him.”(BG)
23 Then turning to his disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you see but didn’t see them; to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.”(BH)

The Witness of Creation and Scripture
For the choir director. A psalm of David.

their voice is not heard.
4 Their message[b] has gone out to the whole earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.(C)
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun.(D)
5 It is like a bridegroom coming from his home;
it rejoices like an athlete running a course.
6 It rises from one end of the heavens
and circles to their other end;(E)
nothing is hidden from its heat.

dripping from a honeycomb.(M)
11 In addition, your servant is warned by them,
and in keeping them there is an abundant reward.(N)
12 Who perceives his unintentional sins?
Cleanse me from my hidden faults.(O)
13 Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins;(P)
do not let them rule me.(Q)
Then I will be blameless
and cleansed from blatant rebellion.(R)
14 May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,(S)
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.(T)

6 Now I know that the Lord gives victory to his anointed;(AD)
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories from his right hand.(AE)
7 Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses,
but we take pride in the name of the Lord our God.(AF)
8 They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand firm.(AG)
9 Lord, give victory to the king!(AH)
May he[c] answer us on the day that we call.

How greatly he rejoices in your victory!(AI)

and have not denied the request of his lips.(AK)Selah
3 For you meet him with rich blessings;
you place a crown of pure gold on his head.(AL)
4 He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.(AM)
5 His glory is great through your victory;
you confer majesty and splendor on him.(AN)
6 You give him blessings forever;(AO)
you cheer him with joy in your presence.(AP)
7 For the king relies on the Lord;
through the faithful love of the Most High
he is not shaken.(AQ)
8 Your hand will capture all your enemies;
your right hand will seize those who hate you.(AR)
9 You will make them burn
like a fiery furnace when you appear;
the Lord will engulf them in his wrath,
and fire will devour them.(AS)
10 You will wipe their progeny from the earth
and their offspring from the human race.[d](AT)
11 Though they intend to harm[e] you
and devise a wicked plan, they will not prevail.(AU)

Why are you so far from my deliverance(AY)
and from my words of groaning?(AZ)
2 My God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
by night, yet I have no rest.(BA)
3 But you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.(BB)
4 Our ancestors trusted in you;
they trusted, and you rescued them.(BC)
5 They cried to you and were set free;
they trusted in you and were not disgraced.(BD)
6 But I am a worm and not a man,(BE)
scorned by mankind and despised by people.(BF)

let him save him;
let the Lord[h] rescue him,
since he takes pleasure in him.”(BH)

you have been my God from my mother’s womb.(BJ)
11 Don’t be far from me, because distress is near
and there’s no one to help.(BK)
12 Many bulls surround me;
strong ones of Bashan encircle me.(BL)
13 They open their mouths against me—
lions, mauling and roaring.(BM)
14 I am poured out like water,(BN)
and all my bones are disjointed;(BO)
my heart is like wax,
melting within me.(BP)
15 My strength is dried up like baked clay;(BQ)
my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.(BR)
You put me into the dust of death.(BS)

a gang of evildoers has closed in on me;
they pierced[j] my hands and my feet.(BU)
17 I can count all my bones;
people[k] look and stare at me.(BV)
18 They divided my garments among themselves,
and they cast lots for my clothing.(BW)

My strength, come quickly to help me.(BY)
20 Rescue my life from the sword,(BZ)
my only life[l] from the power of these dogs.

A Father’s Example
4 Listen, sons, to a father’s discipline,(A)
and pay attention so that you may gain understanding,
2 for I am giving you good instruction.(B)
Don’t abandon my teaching.
3 When I was a son with my father,
tender and precious to my mother,
4 he taught me and said,
“Your heart must hold on to my words.
Keep my commands and live.(C)
5 Get wisdom, get understanding;(D)
don’t forget or turn away from the words from my mouth.
6 Don’t abandon wisdom, and she will watch over you;
love her,(E) and she will guard you.
7 Wisdom is supreme—so get wisdom.
And whatever else you get, get understanding.(F)
8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
if you embrace her, she will honor you.(G)
9 She will place a garland of favor on your head;
she will give you a crown of beauty.”(H)
Two Ways of Life
10 Listen, my son. Accept my words,(I)
and you will live many years.(J)
11 I am teaching you the way of wisdom;
I am guiding you on straight paths.(K)
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hindered;(L)
when you run, you will not stumble.(M)
13 Hold on to instruction; don’t let go.(N)
Guard it, for it is your life.
14 Keep off the path of the wicked;(O)
don’t proceed on the way of evil ones.
15 Avoid it; don’t travel on it.
Turn away from it, and pass it by.
16 For they can’t sleep
unless they have done what is evil;
they are robbed of sleep
unless they make someone stumble.(P)
17 They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.
18 The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,(Q)
shining brighter and brighter until midday.
19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;(R)
they don’t know what makes them stumble.(S)
The Straight Path
20 My son, pay attention to my words;
listen closely to my sayings.(T)
21 Don’t lose sight of them;(U)
keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them,
and health to one’s whole body.
23 Guard your heart above all else,[a]
for it is the source of life.(V)
24 Don’t let your mouth speak dishonestly,(W)
and don’t let your lips talk deviously.
25 Let your eyes look forward;
fix your gaze[b] straight ahead.(X)
26 Carefully consider the path[c] for your feet,(Y)
and all your ways will be established.
27 Don’t turn to the right or to the left;(Z)
keep your feet away from evil.
